 The Old Inn, Kirkgate
Topic Originator: veteraneastender

Lockdown has persuaded me to follow up on family ancestry research to fill in some gaps and join dots.

It was a revelation to discover recently that my great grandfather had the "Auld Hoose" (as it was then named) in Dunfermline for a couple of years in the very late Victorian era.

Where the founders of DAFC met back in the day apparently.

When it opens again you should go in and see the urinals he installed.

I was reading the sign outside today which gives some of the history of the place, very interesting. Made me want to find out more about it

Great pub... friends tell me that I`ve had many a great night in there, but for some reason my recollection is a little hazy...

Old No.3 on draught, won`t see that a lot these days

To five and five and fiftyfive,
the first of letters add.
'twill name a thing 'twould please a king,
and drive a wise man mad.

Regulars should recognise that. It was on an ancient window that was removed. It was posted on the bar wall. Maybe still is. Took me a wee while to solve and I only met two others who know the answer. Maybe its well known by now though.

Unrelated but linked in with how old pubs are named. A lot of people see "Ye Olde Inn" and say "Yee Old Inn". The Y isn't actually a Y. It's an old character that no longer exists but looked a bit like a Y. The original character was pronounced with a "Th" sound.

It took a bit of solving, but it is a thing that would please most men, not just kings

Is it to do with Roman numerals and how u as a consonant can be represented by a v?

Or am I making a fanny of myself?

It`s called a thorn I believe.

If you look on the sign to the left of the door at the old Inn, there is a big spiel on the history of the place and the Y shaped letter appears on it throughout

I think it may have been QI I learned that from. That means for all these years we`ve all been singing the wrong song every time we get a corner. Come on ye Pars does have a better ring to it than come on the Pars though :)

Blame lazy European printers who couldn't be bothered with it 😬

Still trying to work out the original riddle.

"When it opens again you should go in and see the urinals he installed."

Back then they were second hand rejects acquired from Brockville when Falkirk upgraded their latrines.
