The initial security guard needs retrained. He's correct that you may not film in the Kingsgate (or any private place) without consent, but he goes in way too hard. Something must have happened with the gent filming.

Why WAS this man filming in a shopping centre? He's not a journalist or reporter. The video starts with him filming the escalators. That's an odd thing to start filming, which suggests he was filming other things before this.

Hopefully a full investigation is completed by both the Kingsgate and the police.

The boy filming is right, when unlocked it is a public walkway.

Can`t find anything online to back that up that belief. If anyone can find a link to the legislation that confirms a privately owned shopping centre to be a public place I`d be much obliged.

That was actually from the very same guards about two weeks ago, my daughter is exempt from wearing a mask so we were approached, much different tact, very polite, when they wouldn't accept the exemption I stated the same, having worked in the Kingsgate for a while, he advised I was right, no argument, no threats of violence.
At that point I pointed out that exemption or not they were in no position to police us, they're answer was a sort of mumbling about guidelines and off they trotted.
I worked there for a while unless something has drastically changed we were told the security had virtually no power because the walk through is public, only the stores are private.
Wondering now if the guy they bullied was a wee chap...

It's not a public walkway. Photography and filming is not permitted without prior consent. Yes, the security handled it badly but there are too many attention seekers with these type of videos on YouTube.

Two weeks ago the very same guards conceded it was.

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. It's quite clear from the video that they're not very good at their job 😂

If the Kingsgate is private property and they have adequate signs to say that you are not allowed to film inside without permission from the owners then this is a non-story.

The guard(s) could probably do with some extra training in conflict management, but that`s about it.

The guy who filmed it should probably just find a new hobby.

Imagine acting like that but you’re only a security guard in a shopping centre . No kids or thieving junkies to go after so they pick on a wee guy on his own. Definitely screams under 18s disco bouncer. Bet he’s never knocked anyone out.

Then that has changed dramatically, when I worked there the walkway was classed as public, this was confirmed by the centre management whilst defending their staff for doing nothing against thieves, said they couldn't....public walkway.

Kingsgate isn't a public walkway. It's a private shopping centre so filming is prohibited unless approved by the management.

I've filmed in there without any issue in the past (son on one of those bloody rides outside Poundland). Others have said they've taken photos in front of the big teddy. I think the difference is there was an obvious reason for photography/filming. This chap was allegedly filming inside and outside shops so I can understand the intervention. There's a guy on TikTok who does the same. He's just a pest. Security handled it really badly, which makes me think something must have happened previously.

Like I said something must have changed, the centre security used the public walkway excuse over all my years in the record shop.

I think they were palming you off unfortunately. In my illustrious career as a security guard I worked in one of the stores in the Gyle and we frequently worked with the center guards and had a link radio connecting all the stores so we could radio in whenever there was a known tea leaf in the center or as a heads up to keep an eye on someone we suspected might nick something.

Anyone who was banned from the center would be escorted out of the center as shopping centers do tend to be completely private land and the management can refuse entry at any time. Its my understanding there is no public right of access to a shopping center even as throughway when it's open.

Going back to the video I agree that it looks like something is likely to have happened beforehand to cause the guard to go off on one but even still you're meant to be far more professional than that and you're not allowed to threaten violence against someone just because they're filming when they shouldn't. It's a disproportionate response to the situation.

Discipline action against any of the guards found to be acting outside of their allowable remit and a temporary ban with the threat of a permanent ban for the nugget taking the film would seem appropriate. There are genuine security concerns behind people taking videos and photos. They tend to be less stringent when they are displays at Easter and Christmas as an example but a guy wandering round the sections that have closed shops filming would almost certainly have been flagged on the radio at the Gyle.

I wouldn't say creepy, plenty people documenting empty places during the pandemic, a bit unusual, not something I would do....creepy...not so sure.
Pointless more than anything.

The first guy was well out of order. Totally out his depth and should be sacked for threatening physical violence. 2nd guy could probably do with some training, and 3rd guy wasn't quite so bad. Their manager, should also be getting his jotters due to his initial reaction of Facebook, which showed he wasn't fit to be providing security in this place. Name sounded familiar, is he not also something to do with security at East End

The guy filming seems like a bit of a tube and not sure what his motive is for filming.
The first Security Guard is out of order, reminds me of some of the bouncers at the Ballroom back in the day that would refuse entry if you weren't wearing smart shoes or if you weren't with a girl he fancied.
The only guy that comes out of that relatively decent is the younger guy at the end who is trying to play it down.
The whole thing is an absolute shambles though.

Awight Pat!

I am not so familiar with how security works, but were these security people trained for such situations? Is there ongoing training for them.
If they are sacked, what training will be given to the new people who have to deal with such situations?

I think it's changed a bit since I did it. I got sent down to England for a week long course which I'm not sure was the norm at the time.

I think these days everyone is meant to be SIA licenced which requires a recognosed training qualification in the security industry although I don't have any practical experience of how good the training or the current system is.

I’ve heard pervy types hang around escalators. If this dude had upkilted me security would have had to apply their resuscitation skills.

I watched the video on the Courier website.

The gentleman seems to take great delight in goading the security personnel.
In turn, security "bite" and lose their composure at times, but understandable, IMO

Both parties come out of this poorly

The escalators are closed so he'd have a tough job. The rumour mill suggests he was filming in shops and around the centre before being approached. I'd hope the police would have reviewed what he was filming. These clips are always frustrating as the miss the lead up. It's the same with accident videos or fights.

Apologies for any offence caused. I was only answering a question and wouldn't want them incorrectly associated. For what it's worth, if it was the person I dangerously named, I would expect they will handle this appropriately.
