Well it's that time again.
Eternal hope that we can do better this year... But starting the campaign down at "twickers" fills me with the fear 😬

As in the football matches against England even when we outplay them we don`t seem to be able to translate our superiority into a `doing` in terms of points or goals. It must be something lacking in the Scottish psyche.

I enjoy watching rugby but can someone tell me what is the point of the scrum these days. Scrum halves just feed the ball to their team. One scrum yesterday took over 3 minutes!

Loved when WP Nel came on and immediately forced them to collapse the scrum and give up a penalty with his use of the dark arts . Their forward pack were static, unfit and unable to recycle quick enough. Too many players and not enough team. How Itoje managed not to get a card is beyond me. Great team performance and having Hogg and Russell on their A game was a joy to watch. After that I expect to see Jones initiate a clear out as a few big names didn't bother turning up.

Heads so far up their own Jacksie`s

Maybe with 15 minutes to go in the game the expectation is going to be pretty heavy for them," said Jones the England coach,

A comment which now resides in the same category as Jamie George`s talk about wanting to "take teams apart with our attack"

And Ben Young`s assertion that "waves of white shirts" make it hard for any opposition to live with England.

OH Really

Sore one, last week kicked it forward at the death and got away with it - not this time. This week in decent position with 2 or 3 mins and gave away possession when keeping the ball could have led to a pen or drop goal and a lead.

Russel's decision to run the penalty produced a try. Unfortunately it was disallowed. I thought the safe 3 pts was best.

We lost that because we gave away 3 needless penalties in quick succession which resulted in their first try.
Coming in from the side then a high tackle, I cant remember what the third was.

We then got a red card.
Anyone blaming Russell or Townsend for that defeat needs to shake themselves.

Losing to Wales by 1 point with a man down for 25% of the game was none too shabby.
Indiscipline cost us the match.

We nearly snatched it too. A phenominal diving heel swiping tackle prevented a memorable victory.

Not a classic against Ireland but held on for the win.
Their offloading in the tackle is something I've always wished Scotland would do more of.

Tactical kicking whilst our backs were able to press their defence was how we beat England and it was working until we lost a back to replace the prop.

Will the game go ahead ? and is it necessary to put all at risk ?

From the Beeb :-

France scrum-half Antoine Dupont has tested positive for Covid-19, just over a week before the Six Nations meeting with Scotland in Paris.

The French Rugby Federation announced the news on Friday, with 11 other players returning negative results.

All members of the 31-man squad have been tested, with the other results not yet known.

Head coach Fabien Galthie and assistant William Servat tested positive earlier this week and have been isolating.

French health minister Olivier Veran announced on Thursday that anyone testing positive would need to remain out of contact with others for 10 days, up from seven.

A replacement for Dupont has yet to be named, with France recalling tighthead prop Demba Bamba following injury.

We can agree to disagree (it is allowed) 🤣
I thought our decision making at key moments was bordering on amateur and our mistakes cost us dear against a side we should have been able to dominate.
Wales are a shadow of the team they were only 2 years ago and were there for the taking.
As for the Red card... They all know that contact with the head is a no no and for his rush of blood to the heid he's now sidelined for the rest of the tournament.

Aaps. Referring to discipline, far too many penalties given away needlessly. Decision making whilst bold was also flawed . I'm all for free flowing rugby but you need to keep the points ticking over to win. The margins are so slim the game can flip on one or two decisions made by the team. Wales whilst they play ugly, still got the result. With the possession we had we should have been clean and clear by half time.

Announced on Wednesday that the game was going ahead then this :-

From the Beeb :-

France have suspended training after another player tested positive for Covid-19 before Sunday`s Six Nations match against Scotland.

Competition organisers had announced on Wednesday that the match would go ahead as planned despite an outbreak that saw 10 French players contract the virus.

The French Rugby Federation says, as a result of the latest positive case, "the entire group is in isolation".

The Six Nations committee is meeting on Thursday to consider the implications.

Do you think maybe Italy should play in a European comp rather than this one. They would dominate a setup with Spain, Romania (who else)? That might generate more interest from their potential fan base and get more folk into the game, helping long term development. I cant see the Italians being too chuffed getting skelped and finishing last all the time.

Mabe a 6 nations division 2 with one up one down.

Has been talked about and continues to be talked about... But very little seems to actually happen.
Italy are caught between a rock and a hard place... Too good to play against the so called "lesser nations"... But really not good enough for the 6 nations. They have their moments now and then.. But too infrequently.
But... If they were to be replaced in the 6 nations, who would replace them?
Georgia, Portugal, Spain, Russia, Belgium and Romania (the so called lesser nations) from the REIC (Rugby Europe International championships) could all potentially be in the running.
Been talk about a play off between the bottom of the 6 nations vs the top of the REIC every year to decide a place... But again... Talk is all it seems to be.

Thats my point. If they played in a lower league theywould win regularly and encourage more home grown talent to take up the sport. Italy Georgia and Romania would take turns in the 6 nations.

Personally I thought the ref was brilliant... He's my hero.
Can you imagine how raging we would be if he'd done that against Scotland?
And wee Farrell's face during his interview was the icing on the cake.

Scotland good in patches today (apart from our shambles of a lineout) but just pipped by Ireland.
Hopefully we can pummel Italy next game.

I think you have a bizarre and unhealthy dislike for a world class rugby player. Probably best you go for a lie down and take a few deep breaths, Mark.

Genuinely baffled as to why anyone would single out Finn after that game or Wales. Interested to see your thoughts on why he lives in your head rent free. **don’t worry I’m not interested at all**

Isn`t there a danger of throwing the baby out with the bathwater if they get rid of Townsend? We now have a side capable of scoring tries from anywhere on the field. Most games are lost due to players not executing at key moments. Is that down to the coach? eg Turner`s throws at the line-out, Price not clearing his lines. These seem to a non-rugby person like me to be basic skills you would expect international players to have mastered long ago. Is it just like football though - the coach/manager always takes the rap?

Absolutely... He's the man in charge... If the results don't improve he gets dumped.
Then we get someone else... But who?
We're never going to be world beaters when we effectively only have two domestic professional sides to pick the squad from. The nuts and bolts of why we are where we are just now has to be looked at otherwise we will always have a national team that can upset anyone... But only now and then. Consistency has always eluded Scotland.
What's the answer... I have no idea.
But until an answer is found... Things won't change

I can't understand the criticism.

We beat England soundly, lost by a point to the likely slam winners, lost by 3 points to a very good Irish side and are in with a chance of third place.

WTF more do you expect?

It's all about the fine margins. We have not jumped the extra 10% required to make the grade ACROSS THE BOARD. We have moved forward in passing ,defense and open free play but have dropped back in the line out ,discipline and decision making. Rather than the coaching teams for the individual areas it has to be the head coach that carries the can as he decides where the resourced are aimed.

Going against the grain here but defensively Hogg is poor and costs too many tries. Offensively excellent of course.

Been well 'proven' by the SRU the pathways are in place 'allegedly' to give the conveyor belt of talent. Having seen how they pick the talent that's a bone of contention. The players are willing but the gameday approach is lacking. We have a young pool but it's not going up to the next level and that's down to the game plan set down by the head coach. Put Cockerill in place and I would reckon they'd get that extra 10% needed. Toonie just doesn't have the big stick or the playbook that other coaches have. Previous successful Scottish coaches all had a mean streak. Toonie is too nice.

You can expect many line outs during a match and prepare accordingly- you don’t count on penalties.

The coach carries the can for failure - same as football. How many times do we see people calling for Stevie’s head a season as a result of player failures?

Not really wee eck ... a better comparison would be the rugby player missing a conversion to a footballer missing a penalty

A line out is a well practised set piece with between 6 and 14 players involved at the same time ... a wee bit like a free kick or a corner ... :)

Why did Turner not just throw it to the front of the line-out after a few failures? Doesn`t that improve the chance of success?

`The coach carries the can for failure - same as football. How many times do we see people calling for Stevie’s head a season as a result of player failures?` - That doesn`t make it right.

It's surprising how many calls a team has. Lineouts/attack moves for forwards and backs or mixed and even defence style slide or blitz. More like American Football than it appears and gameplans can be very structured.Practiced on a Tues and Thurs, executed on the Saturday. Some are ingenious and every team has a few left of field calls

Fun facts - 4 years ago today Scotland were 2nd in the 6 nations table, had won 3 games at home (Italy, Wales & Ireland) and were ranked 5th in the World….oh and we had decided not to retain the manager and to install Townsend in the May

Presently 2nd bottom and 9th in the World Rankings. We were definitely not getting soundly beaten as you suggest.

Progress?

I haven`t watched much of it this year, but saw a wee bit of Ireland-England and some of tonight`s game. As a casual watcher, I have to say that the scrum completely ruins it for me. In the earlier game, a minute was used up fannying about before the ball even came in. Another minute to take a penalty. And tonight, my ears are ringing at this clown of a referee who just will not shut up.

Still, some joy in hearing that equally irriating clown Jonathan Davies spewing as Wales lose with the last kick of the game. So maybe it`s not all bad.

Calling me out for my comments then getting all precious because i think you have a bizarre dislike for Finn 🙄

You’re more than welcome explain why Finn Russell is to blame for Graham giving away 3 penalties in a row to gift Wales 90-95 metres and a try, or zander getting red carded, or the rest of the teams ill discipline. You’re welcome to explain why it’s his fault that our line out was so embarrassing against Ireland and again our discipline was again so poor or why we got outcompeted at the break down. Just try not to get upset when I point out that it’s nonsense.

I believe it was because they were worried Townsend was about to go to a French or an English club side and then the opportunity would be lost.
The work he had done with Glasgow (which made up most of the Scotland team) it seemed the obvious choice. But potentially losing him to France for years forced their hand sooner than they would have liked.

Because of the pandemic I`ve seen more of the Six Nations than normal and I`ve thoroughly enjoyed it although many of the technical issues and laws still elude me. I must say I find some of the criticism of Scotland harsh. We`ve competed well with the other three home nations and only lost to Ireland and Wales by a whisker in each case, despite being a man down against Wales. We have some really exciting players but just seem unable to put together a complete performance for 80 minutes. I think Townsend has done a decent job after our abysmal showing in the World Cup. Friday`s game in Paris will be a real test but the lack of a partisan crowd may help.

Toonie isn't ruthless enough to be an international coach.
Could you imagine Russell getting back into the Scotland squad if he'd done what he done when Stern Vern was in charge???
Not a hope... Not that I'm unhappy about Russell being back in the mix... He's a maverick and on his day simply unplayable.
But Toonie just doesn't have the international attitude in my view... He's too nice.
I'm betting Glasgow regret letting him go too...they've been on the slide recently but Edinburgh are on the up.
Expecting big things from Glasgow next season as they've been recruiting like mad in the last few months.
I'm expecting France to slap us when we eventually play them.... But I live in hope... Ye just never know eh.
Second place still available potentially and even if we lose we still finish above Engurlandlandshireshire.
It's win win either way really 🤣

How do you see the second half of France-Scotland going, guys? The first 10 minutes of the second half is going to be tough with only 14 men.

They may lose as many games as they win but watching Scotland almost always means entertaining rugby. Yet another great watch last night. Shame can’t be said for a certain round ball team we talk about on this site.

Enormously entertaining game and it was nice to get some Scottish luck for a change as (and not reducing the performance at all) we had some massive slices of luck. The double movement in our try, the late yellow after our red and ultimately the French not putting the ball out to win the match letting us in to steal it.

Great win but still 4th in the table and a massive opportunity lost. Could have threatened to finish top of the table but poor discipline has cost dearly and much work to be done there.

PS you’ve 2 more 6 nations to look forward to before the RWC buspasspar

Thin margins. ..6 points off a grand slam.

Great watch last night. Hipefully they can build on it.

I dont think we were lucky with the late yellow. If he hadn't done what he did to earn it maybe we would have scored. The yellow was deserved. Our red on the other hand was very lucky for them.
I also think more credit should be given to the players who didnt give up when France won the ball and only had to put it out of play to win. They got the tackles in and stopped him when we all thought it was over.
The discipline in not conceding a penalty or losing the ball again during the 20plus phases leading to the winning try had nothing to do with luck either.

Funny how some folk always manage to see negatives rather than the glaringly obvious positives.

6 points between us and a grand slam. Aye we were lucky alright.

Sport is all about making the most of your opportunities when they arise and that includes taking advantage of opponents` mistakes. Other teams have benefited from our errors over the years but that is rarely seen as `luck`. For some reason some people tend to depreciate any success we have. The same thing happens on the Football Forum with the Pars.

Just twigged. They could have booted it out and won the game but they needed more points to win the title. I think the guy who failed to kick it out was caught in 2 minds and ultimately paid the price.

Even if France ended up getting a try and conversion it still wouldn't of been enuff to win the title as I'm sure they had to win by 21 points. Like wise on the other side of the coin for us to have finished 3rd we had to win by 8 points

Turns out it was going to be 6 week ban but was reduced to 3.
One of the matches is against Edinburgh in the champions Cup.
"The three-man disciplinary committee said they gave credit for Mr Russell's prompt acceptance that his actions had constituted foul play and been worthy of a red card, his disciplinary record, his attitude to the disciplinary process before and during the hearing, and his clear remorse".

If we`d won by 8 we would have finished second. We were literally 3 missed kicks away from winning the grand slam, somewhere we really need to improve on if we`re to go to the next level

The Irish game - we were lucky to lose by 3. Ireland were far better than us.

The Wales game we were incredibly unlucky - questionable red given against us, and a clear penalty not given at the end, as well as a disallowed try.

Yes and no widtink - it was one of those where if the ref was looking to find mitigation he could have found it, and no-one would have complained if he only showed yellow.

In a sense the ref couldn`t make a `wrong` decision, both red and yellow could be argued, so, in my view, it was unlucky he went for red.

`Scotland flanker Hamish Watson has topped the vote for this year`s player of the Six Nations.

The 29-year-old finished ahead of Welsh duo Louis Rees-Zammit and Taulupe Faletau, Ireland`s Robbie Henshaw and Tadhg Beirne, and France`s Antoine Dupont in an online poll.`

Can Gatland ignore him now?

From the BBC Sport website:-

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is set to be named as the British & Irish Lions attack coach for the tour of South Africa this summer. Head coach Warren Gatland is preparing for the series to go ahead as planned in July, with his backroom team to be announced on Tuesday. Townsend was offered a role by Gatland for the 2017 tour to New Zealand, but turned it down to focus on Scotland. But this time he has accepted the chance lead the Lions` attack.

Townsend was a key player in the victorious series win in South Africa back in 1997, when he played at fly-half. No more than three Scots have been selected in an initial British & Irish Lions squad since that tour, with Townsend`s presence on the staff a potential help to some Scotland players` selection chances. Scotland beat England, France, and Italy in the Six Nations but finished fourth on points difference.

Good news in that there will be someone to present a case for some of the Scottish players on this occasion. I am sure having no Scottish coaches didn’t help Scottish player chances when there was a 50:50 choice to be made last time.

I’ve hospitality tickets for the Cape Town test and have given in and asked for them refunded on Friday. Gutted as that’s 2 tours in a row that external factors have stopped me achieving that particular bucket list item.

Confirmed ... from Aunty :-

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend will lead the British and Irish Lions attack in South Africa, with Steve Tandy and Robin McBryde also part of Warren Gatland`s coaching team.

Wales` Neil Jenkins will embark on his fourth Lions tour as a coach.

For Townsend, Scotland defence coach Tandy and former Wales forwards coach McBryde, it will be their first tour as part of the Lions coaching team.

The first Test against the world champions is scheduled for 24 July.

"I am very pleased to have assembled such a high-quality coaching team," said Gatland.

Looks like you could be right MDCCCLXXXV

England players may miss out on the British and Irish Lions tour because of poor Six Nations form while there will be more Scots picked than in 2017, says head coach Warren Gatland.

After announcing his coaches for the South Africa tour, Gatland emphasised the importance of 2021 Six Nations performances in his squad selection.

Gatland said the five coaches had put forward over 50 names for selection.

From Aunty :-

Eddie Jones has been backed to continue as England head coach following a review into the team`s disappointing fifth-place finish in the Six Nations.

Jones` position had been under scrutiny since defeats by Ireland, Wales and Scotland in the same tournament for the first time in 45 years.

"The debrief was a valuable process, we all learned a lot," Jones said.

"Most importantly, we have identified actions to enable the team to move forward positively towards 2023."

The panel reviewing England`s performance consisted of "RFU board members, executives and independent experts", while past and present players - as well as the coaches - also gave their feedback.
