I think we should recognise the monumental performance of a woman brought up just along the road from us winning a Silver Medal at the Olympics. I must admit I had a wee tear in my eye watching it.

This is indeed a fantastic achievement and I’m not sure it has received the acclaim it deserves.

I know being an Olympian in any discipline is an achievement in itself, let alone medalling, and you can only beat who you’re up against, but I think this is worth more.

I think athletics (at least some events) is the true universal sport. (Almost) everyone can run – you don’t need a horse to compete, or a boat, or an expensive bike, or a bunch of talented team-mates – so basically, she is 2nd best in the world.

The other impressive thing about Laura Muir is that she isn`t a full-time athlete in the way some are. She has managed to combine her athletics career at an extremely high level whilst also qualifying as a vet and I think she may now be a practising vet, albeit with a very sympathetic employer who allows her as much time off as she needs for athletics.

She has had so many near-misses in the past in international competition and always seemed quite stoical in the face of disappointment but her reaction to winning that silver medal showed how much these setbacks had simply inspired her to work harder and achieve her goals.
