Very random one this but hear me out.
Heard a wee piece on the radio the other day about random and useless trivia and facts. All the usual ones were trotted out but one really caught me off guard, initially never gave it a second thought as passed it off as nonsense but the more i thought about it the more intrigued i was.....
"The UK is/was the only place in the world you could buy 10 decks of cigarettes"
(Obviously this was prior to all the legal changes a few years ago and banning advertising etc).
I definitely remember there being a quirk about the packs you could buy in the vending machines in pubs and clubs never containing a full 20 but the more i thought about the above, is it actually true?
Not a smoker myself but can never think of ever seeing 10 decks abroad when going on holiday or working abroad. Likewise in any films or TV programmes........

Your May be right TAFKA, I can never recall 10 fags being sold abroad.

There wasn’t any need for them to be sold in 10’s abroad as they were cheap. I can remember fags being sold as singles.

The wee shop down from Queen Anne High school used to sell single ciggies. Was called Wafers... Or something like that.
This was between 1982 & 1986.

I remember smoking a cinnamon stick as a boy .. A single fag was 3d when I was age to smoke .. Then the ice cream vans started selling the cheap Chinese rubbish .. Then the local entrepreneurs started bringing suitcases of tobacco from France and Belgium mostly rolling tobacco and made fortunes .. Never smoked myself .. glad about that :)

Smoked since I was about 11 or 12 until mid 40s, I woke up ,decided to stop and never had a fag in last 8 years

Woodbines were available in packs of 5 - going way back.
I think they were called Wild Woodbines then ?

I think the reason for the varying number of cigarettes in a pack in vending machines was that it was easier to reduce the numbers in a packet rather than recalibrate the price in the machine. So if 20 cost five shillings (I know)! and then the price went up you might then get say 18 for the same five shillings.

Fairly sure it was 16 or 18 out a vending machine and they were over-priced too.
I don't know how people afford it nowadays. I remember when a 10 deck was a couple of quid and 20 deck four quid. You could get cheaper but that was the almost standard price. Last I noticed it was over a tenner for a pack of 20.

I stopped when it went over £2 for a pack - I was a student and became too tight to smoke!
I also stopped adding sugar to coffee tea cereal at the same time, ie when I had to start buying it myself
That was 25-30 years ago and I haven't touched a cigarette (or sugar) since

I thought when I stopped around 8 years ago £7.50 for for 20 Benson and hedges was extortionate, just checked Tesco there for rough price and shocked to see they are now £13.30
Had a chuckle at that Buspasspar 🤣

I remember at Primary school before we went into the dinner hall the boys who smoked used to rub the nicotine off their fingers on the sand stone wall before they had to show their clean hands to the teacher as they went in

I don`t think it was ever legal to break a packet of cigarettes and sell them singly, although ice cream vendors and shops near schools were known to do this. The 3d single was a godsend for teenage smokers, preferable to abysmal cigarettes called Park Drive which were sold in a packet of five.
Cigarettes in the UK are massively overpriced in the UK, the most expensive in Europe, so I always make sure I bring over two blocks when visiting. This overpricing allows all governments within the UK to adopt a holier than thou attitude, to claim they are only setting high taxes for the benefit of weak-willed addicts the better to help them give up their vice. The truth is more prosaic: as the number of cigarette smokers drops, that shortfall in revenue has to be made up by those who continue to smoke. In fact a nightmare scenario for the government would be if everyone stopped smoking tomorrow: the taxes would then have to come from somewhere else.
The good news should be that fewer smokers makes for a healthier population and less need for medical care. There might be a few charts which show that to be the case but from a personal point of view the unhealthiest looking people I encounter are in the UK, especially younger people who often look seriously overweight.
