Not sure if the insanity has reached Scotland but it would appear there are queues for petrol down south following a remark about potential shortages over winter.
Wondering if these people filling up today now plan to leave their cars on the driveway for the next couple of months until the potential shortages hits. 🤦♂️

You can only fill up the tank in your car!
Is not like you can't stock pile four or five car loads FFS
Maybe people have places to go, commitments that they want to keep and want to make sure they're set - nothing wrong with that
I'm running on fumes at the minute and probably have enough to get to a petrol station but no further, does that make me an idiot if I try to fill up ?

I had to fill up tonight as I was running on red. Do it most Friday nights. Just having a look around, it was very clear who the panic merchants were. I'm sure they are completely unaware that they're causing the issue!

Same as what happened at the start of the pandemic. Muppets panic buying in the shops which the in turn meant there was a shortage of certain products. If folk just carried on as normal there would be no issue.

Both roundabouts near TESCO were blocked by folk going to fill up. We wondered if this was a normal occurrence for a Friday pm.

2 months ago my wife let me buy another car. This time I bought a MG5, I recharge it at home. I can drive 100 miles on £4 of electricity, I was speaking to people at car show today, they were interested in me not having to queue for petrol. Yes I might have problems driving down to England but it was never bought for that. Do your homework before buying your next car, no road tax, cheap servicing and no queuing for fuel. Yes you have to charge it more however I get about 220 miles on a charge.

I have read the incidence of house fire has gone up with electric car charging. If I were to get a car I would certainly recommend getting a sparky to check out the current draw and also the electrical design that would support the car charging.
Better to be safe than sorry.

I got a domestic charge point installed (with £800 towards the £1400 cost in grants), and it involved installing a second consumer unit just for the charge point.

This becomes less of the case as range increases. For example the Mach-E suggests 379 and Long Range Tesla Model S is 412.
These numbers are seldom the real world case but even if you call them both 300 you would charge them up at a public charge point (which are getting faster and faster) and 300 miles would do a fair while. With Covid I’ve done 4,000 in 18 months so 300 miles would last a month and a half. As journeys increase you’re still talking weeks.
Public charge points are increasingly common too so chances are wherever you are going you will have somewhere that you can plug in so you don’t have to go massively out of your way.
People don’t have petrol stations in their garden so ‘filling up’ is not a new idea. I’ve ordered a Taycan Cross Turismo, - for those 0% to go to 80% charge the time taken is 22 minutes on rapid chargers or 40 minutes on the more common ones.
The technology is moving fast so the range and charge times are improving all the time and the entry level pricing of cars are becoming more realistic too.
Course you still have the lithium mining worries but even then multiple new and alternative types of battery are being developed.

Might consider a Tesla in a year or so time P, but the bit that bothers me is that the number of new electric cars hitting the road every month is much more than the number of charging points being installed.
You're right about filling up not being anything new of course but I can pull into a petrol station with 12 pumps and put enough petrol in my car to cover 750 miles in about 5 mins.
If I pull into a mway service station with a few charging stations and join a queue of similar cars then I'm in for a very long wait.

Electric and hydrogen cars just shift the problem. We've got too many cars on the road and too many people taking the car for a short trip.
I remember going back to where I was brought up and couldn't believe the number of parked cars on the road. It had only been 15 years but the place had gone from 2 cars being an exception to being the norm. All these lease deals have made cars far too accessible.
Furthermore, too many good cars are being scrapped. All these new cars filled with precious metals and microprocessors replacing basic motoring - hardly environmentally friendly! You'll notice just now that the second hand market is ridiculous. This is because there's a backlog of cars as there's a global shortage of microchips. Might also notice that BCA don't sell to non-trade now. They send you to our league sponsor.

It bemuses me somewhat where our society is at. Sat in Starbucks this afternoon for a while observing the huge, constant, drive-thru queue. I'm assuming the vast majority were local. I wonder how many made that trip exclusively for a coffee.

The fact is being an idiot has paid off. When you seen the queues on Friday we all had a choice to make. At some point attempt to get petrol and if necessary join the queue or roll the dice and try and get petrol as you would normally do. People shouldn`t have been panic buying to start with but you really have to be pragmatic about it and once you know that these buyers are going to be taking up all the fuel and that you need to join them.

That is for a top of the range model tbf. But yeah, electric vehicles do tend to be pricier than their fuel equivalent.
For my needs the technology isn’t quite there yet, for some people it can be an ideal mode of transport and save money in the long run after the initial outlay.

i think the thing with electric cars is that they`re great for the majority of what people do...
commuting 20miles there and back to edinburgh - fine
darting about the town, going to supermarket, nipping down to aberdour for a walk on the beach, etc - fine
the annual trip to down south or over to ireland on ferry to visit family - nope (but on those occasions i could just hire a car or take the train

You are starting there at a pretty high price point though as Tesla Model 3 is half that and as I mentioned above the Skoda Citigo is £15,000. Like the ICE market there are different levels.
Companies are now offering Sustainable Car Schemes where you can take one on a rental via salary sacrifice. In other words you pay the cost out of your salary before tax is applied so you save the cost of tax and NI (so say for easy sums a £1,000 rental would actually cost £580 for a Scottish higher rate tax payer). Works the same way as cycle to work schemes. Again these are government pushed schemes to encourage people into EV’s rather a tax dodge. You then have BIK which at 1% this year going to 2% next which isn’t a huge amount.
….course once they have a critical mass taxation will move like it always does

I have thought that if we genuinely wish to have a replacement car program with short stops then it is like the Wild West stagecoach change. I.e. no car ownership and people who wish to drive long journeys have a car transfer scheme.
Problems I see
-car logistics - cars out of position for who need to order
-car changeover - car seats luggage, etc
The benefit of no car ownership is people would pay for what they use. The disadvantages are the costs.
There just isn’t any nice solution for long journeys

Hi P.
I was responding to another post where £75k was mentioned.
Your numbers are the sort of thing I've seen and they are certainly interesting for all but my longest trips for work. I did over 1000 miles in 3 days last week and I'd imagine that would have taken 4 in an electric car so I'd maybe need to take the wife's mini.

Yeah JTH123 if regularly doing 1000 miles in a week the technology/infrastructure is a year or two away from being able to do that without any range anxiety.
Similar but different parsmad but I have a mate who uses Edinburgh car club. It sounds like Boris bikes but with cars and from the numbers he gave they are very affordable, shame that type of scheme will be limited to larger cities.

Could there not be charged batteries at service stations, and then somehow you drive in and park and a robot or something swaps your battery.
Would need standard battery connectors and some sort of battery plan and assembly line tech ...but that way you could be in, flat battery out, new battery plugged in and few mins later you drive away leaving the garage to charge your flat battery for another customer

Maybe an option to have two batteries per car? If both fully charged, that should be the long trips sorted ?

Most batteries have a 8 year warranty and real world experience shows they are lasting longer than expected so it’s like comparing to the price of an engine.
Mining for the creation of those batteries is an entirely more valid challenge though

From what I was reading the batteries are lasting 200-300k miles before needing replaced. So that part of them isn’t really an issue. Better range, advancements in the technology to lower the cost of the vehicles and better infrastructure across the country is needed if there is to be a real push for the population to switch to electric vehicles.

An old VW PD engine is capable of covering hundreds of thousands of miles with no problems and pretty fantastic MPG. Absolute bullet-proof engine.
If I were going for an electric car it would be on a lease. Too early to make a call on the long term credentials of an electric motor.

Why are the retailers allowing this kind of behaviour?
Why are they not capping at £30 a vehicle?
Greed?
Get rid of stock that's going off?
Create a panic, sell of thr old crap?

Petrol and diesel last for months. If there was an issue with it going "off" it would have happened last year when people were going nowhere. Petrol in particular would be obvious given it only recently moved from E5 to E10. Still, if Marion on Facebook shared a post about it...
This is a result of an incompetent government with an incompetent minister for transport who were no doubt voted in by the same idiots filling cans at the petrol station.

I can confirm what Jake said, Rasta. Fuels, such as petrol and diesel, do not "go off." Crude oil has been millions of years in the making and has "gone off" as far as it can. The fuels we get from the raw crude are merely different components of this complex mixture separated according to their boiling points. The smaller molecules have lower b. pts.

In fairness, it will go bad if you leave it in a plastic bottle in your garage for months like you may do for a petrol lawnmower. Would take some time for it to become nasty though.

Yes petrol does go off .. It will deteriorate after a while especially in lawnmowers which won`t run as well on old fuel as they do with fresh fuel
If you have old petrol in your car you will know when it has gone off by a rough idle
Petrol that has gone off is often darker and smells a bit sour

Was there any need for the snide remark eh?.
I don't know anything about petrol, don't even drive, it was just an idea given our current government pi5shes down our back and calls it rain all the time...snide wee Richard.

Went this morning for normal fill up (when I get to quarter tank I fill to full) and of 12 bays at Tesco in the town only 4 were being used so no signs of panic here. 2 single pumps (in banks of 3) were out of order so don’t think that was a shortage.
Fuel is extortionate though - £100 and a sore wrist later I look forward to just plugging an EV in and leaving it. That said got confirmation that mine won’t be ready until June 2022 so a lengthy wait owing to massive demand.

Wasn't looking to cause offence, Rasta. Merely pointing out that what people share on Facebook is usually nonsense. Just look at the rumours about our manager and walk outs etc. Also a post on here about a stabbing that doesn't appear to have happened.

Did anybody catch the Radio Scotland interview this morning with Scottish Tory MP Andrew Bowie ?
Pathetic response to question as to why the government had taken so long to put the army on a warning order for possible action.
It takes 5 days to properly train the military to deliver fuel supplies.
His mindset seems to be if you ignore the problem it will disappear in a couple or so days.

I hadn't seen anything on Facebook, I had seen a guy on Channel 4 news who worked for a major fuel company saying "what shortage?"
He also mentioned something like "ageing surplus" , given Brexit Britain's performance so far that kind of shady crap wouldn't surprise me.
Again though I don't drive do my interest is minimal.

I'd be careful about getting too gallus, BPP. I wouldn't dream of challenging you on any matter to do with bus passes. 😉
Here's what I can tell you about fuels such as petrol and diesel. They consist of molecules called hydrocarbons. The average diesel molecule is longer (bigger) than the average molecule found in petrol. Hydrocarbons do NOT decompose or "go off."
HOWEVER, both petrol and diesel have other chemicals added to them, to make poor quality fuel burn more smoothly. e.g. tetraethyl lead used to be added to petrol.* It is quite possible that some of these additives may decompose over time, a fact I didn't consider in my previous post. Having said that, I have relatives who live and work in Milan, Turin and Switzerland. They all have houses in the small village in S. Italy where I was born. All have old cars which they keep in the village and fire them up when they visit relatives in the summer. I've never heard of them having any problems with the fuel, even though they haven't been used for almost a year. Make of that what you will.
*TEL is no longer used as it produced lead dust from car exhausts, of course. I read about a factory in the US which produced countless tonnes of the stuff every year. When some leaking occurred a large number of workers ended up in hospital with breathing difficulties. The company told the people who conducted an inquiry into the incident that their workers loved their work so much that they insisted on working all the overtime they could get and were simply exhausted. 😃 Amazingly, they were believed!
I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that the company made generous donations to the Republican Party? 🤔

My plug -in hybrid has a lined fuel tank to lengthen the life of the petrol - the expectation is that some folks will go months between fill-ups, depending on journey patterns and ability to charge at, say, your place of employment.
