The cherries I picked were just along the road from my house, for some reason they seemed to be big and ripe.

Think it was an August Saturday night I thought I`d better go and pick them before they disappear.

A couple weeks in freezer then put in fermenting bucket for a week, demijohn for a few weeks and now sitting waiting to be drunk.

I think it`s easy to do. 😁

Aye? Where was he, Barlinnie?

This is quite an interesting thread though, I spotted some Sloe Berries and see I had some Juniper berries in the garden so I was considering trying to make something out of them. It'll be good to hear how everyone has got on

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, Ramon, or I'd have been along sooner.

Proper wine can only be made from grapes - I hope that doesn't sound too snobby. Red wine is easier to make than white wine. There's not a lot to it. Crush the grapes into a clean, sterile container, cover it up and leave it to ferment in a reasonably warm place. (20-25°C) When the fermentation process begins to slow down, press the mixture and drain as much liquid (must) as you can. Leave in demijohn (glass jar) for at least 8-10 weeks before siphoning into bottles and drinking. Always ensure containers are full, so that any CO2 from residual fermentation is able to escape and prevent any unwanted explosions. ☺

Hygiene throughout is key. I get my grapes from Glasgow fruit market. My wine works out at approx Β£2.50 a bottle.

"Only tried making my own once but I chose to try make lager.

The main common difficulty with home brewing beer/lager is cleanliness and hygiene to avoid contamination of the wort - commercial brewers boil at that stage before starting fermentation.

No yeast needed, BPP. It's already on the skins of the grapes as a fine dust. Nothing added at all, which is why wine has been drunk (and so have people) for many thousands of years. Read about Noah getting hoolit in Genesis - it's a hoot. πŸ™‚

Not selling*, LA. Tosh Mac asked me the same question many years ago. He's sampled the odd bottle or 3 when he's visited me.

* I wouldn't want to attract the attentions of HMRC.

this may seem dumb GG :o)

never thought of making wine from grapes, but may well try it.
What weight of grapes do you need ?

The mention of Sloes above made me check the recipe. Says I`ve to leave inb bucket for 2 months (I`d forgotten about that)
Taken them out of the freezer and will put them on tomorrow.
http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/35552/sloe-wine.aspx

Pop the sloes in a bucket and pour on 1 gallon of boiling water. Give them a good stir and pop the top on firmly.
Place the bucket somewhere warm (about 20 C) for 2 months to allow a mould to grow on the top.

You'll be telling me you never thought of using wheat flour to make bread next, Brian. πŸ˜ƒ I do that too, btw.

You have to use wine grapes to make wine. They're small, sweet and juicy. Table grapes are fleshy with little juice. Blochairn fruit market only has wine grapes in during September, normally. You will pay about Β£10 for a 7kg box. That would normally yield 3.5 litres of wine (50%) You'd have to buy at least 10 boxes to make it worthwhile.

I used to make lager when I was in 5th & 6th year at school. A crowd of us went back to my house at lunchtime and had a few. Went back to school feeling ok but it kicked in and we all got suspended as a result. Was hilarious. Someone got caught sliding down a bannister. They came straight for me as a result lol.
