I’m sure his passing will be marked by screening of a film or two on the box. In the Heat of the Night for me please, the initial tension generated by him and Rod Steiger absolutely crackles. No spoiler but they do mellow a bit …
Was surprised to read he was born in Miami only because his parents from the Bahamas were over there on business selling tomatoes! Thus he had joint US/Bahamian citizenship.

I watched it tonight: I`d seen it twice before but there were still things I had missed. So I enjoyed it just as much and found it just as gripping as first time. I got a better grasp of the relationship between the characters played by him and Steiger. Really Steiger was on Tibbs` side more - and from earlier - than I had thought. Apart from the bit where they`re resting up and talking about being loners, the script is very good and acting really good.
The theme music is also class - blues - by Ray Charles.
Just as an aside - since someone mentioned Del Boy on this thread - I happen to be reading Orwell`s `Down and Out in Paris and London` and he describes the time he spent working in a hotel as a `plongeur`. There was a kind of caste system of about eight levels and plongeurs were the lowest of the low - they were insulted by everyone else - cleaners, waiters, chefs etc. It occurred to me that Del Boy`s `plonker` might come from the French `plongeur.` (Internet dictionaries say it derives from `plonk`. I`m not convinced.) Riveting book.
