EHIC

Those of you travelling abroad might be aware of the European Health Card which covered your medical treatment. Due to the benefits of Brexit it is now replaced with a new card if your EHIC has expired, I applied for mine today and was rejected as they couldn`t confirm if I was a UK citizen, even after supplying my NI number. I now have to send copies of utility bills with my name and address on them, the same procedure for my wife.
Having achieved 70yrs working and living in the UK I find it a bit strange they can`t confirm my existence!

Also be aware that there is a backlog, they are currently working on January applications, there was rumoured to be a 30K backlog.

Happy holidays!

You will get a great big Union Jack on your new card. That`ll show Johnny Foreigner. Two Word Wars and one World Cup, and all that

Thanks for the heads up reminder - I`ve just applied for the GHIC (not EHIC) card for both of us, instant acceptance....could not have been easier.

Why has the Independent Feifdom of Lochgelly been discriminated against ?

Time to get the Provost of Fife Council on the case.

What is the benefit of this over Travel Insurance which I would never travel without? Thanks

Nothing. Travel insurance typically covers everything EHIC/GHIC does and more. For example, if you get knocked down and are head to toe in plaster, you`re paying your own air fare under EHIC.

My wee girl took an ear infection 3 years ago in Tenerife. We went to the public hospital at Las Americas. She was seen within an hour and prescribed antibiotics. We filled in a form and they took copies of passports and the ehic and that was it. Very simple. No money changed hands, no claims needed.
Of course we had travel insurance but I`d have both every time.

"Also be aware that there is a backlog, they are currently working on January applications, there was rumoured to be a 30K backlog."

The backlog aspect was mentioned in a Martin Lewis forum last autumn - apparently the wait time from application to delivery is currently in the two week timeframe.

It doesn`t replace regular travel insurance policies, however it is useful to have.

Nothing...

Incorrect. You should get both. See
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/free-ehic-card/

"There are many things which may be excluded under a travel insurance policy that won`t be excluded with a GHIC or EHIC."

I`ve never had to use travel insurance for medical treatment myself. Do you have to pay up front and claim back later maybe? and this card would avoid that.

Unlike the EHIC, the GHIC doesn`t cover Norway or Iceland.

Also, if your EHIC is still valid you don`t need to replace it until it expires.
