I said in a previous thread that I am personally neither pro nor anti monarchy, but as long as they make people happy I wouldn say it is a bad thing.
It might be baffling to some when they see the response from ordinary people but it is what it is.
The same will apply when Charles is crowned King.
Mega feelgood factor. Why? I dunno, but who is to condemn it if it is what the vast majority wants?

Edited to add....I don't agree with my own philosophy when applying it to the majority of republicans supporting the Anti Christ.

I think the weird thing is that a national anthem will have to change because one person died

Anyway, look forward to a few days off, although not necessarily seeing the next nose in the trough taking over

One UK newspaper reported the death of the Queen at around 3pm today but the report was then removed. A message passed to the new PM when in parliament is assumed to have contained that same information.

In the event of the Queen dying in Scotland then it appears the ceremonial proceedings require her coffin to be taken to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh before being taken down to Westminster Abbey.

I’ve nothing against the woman parrot - I don’t know her and so have no more emotion to their family at her passing than I do about other family.

I do resent the privilege and patronage we gave her and her family, but that is not about any individual but the institution that all of us allow to continue

I fully understand, and mostly agree with that. However. I still say look at the reaction of the nation.
You can`t deny the royal family brings something important to masses.
Strange but true.
As long as it does it should be maintained.

Maybe now she has gone things will change. She was pretty special.

Not a royal family fan,but she was loyal to the country, and did her duty till the end. Remember, she was a mother, and a grandmother.

I suppose the Union Jack, which only gets hoisted one day a year on St Andrews House ( Remembrance Day ) will get an airing so that it can be flown at half mast?

The Union Jack has never flown over St Andrews House, ever, and it never will.
The Union flag on the other hand.....
They would need to launch StAndrews house if they wanted to fly a Union Jack.

What I have got is an email from marks and Spencer with their “statement on the passing of Her Majesty The Queen”

Not quite sure why a department store needs to release a statement on that subject, or why they feel the need to spam their customers with it?

No.
The union jack is just the union flag flown from the forward jack-staff of a commissioned naval vessel.
However... The origins of the term "jack" has never really been defined as there are many possible reasons for the term. Nobody seems to know which reason is correct.

Back in ye olde times a small flag flown on the bow of a ship was called a jack. The Union Jack as we know it now would originally have been called the King`s Jack.
A few years before WW1 the naval Union flag or jack gained parliamentary approval to become the national flag.

Nothing strange about businesses making statements

Quite simply showing respect to someone who was dearly loved by the majority of the nation.
I think it is more bizarre that anyone would contest that.
We get messages from work all the time so its a wee bit harsh calling one message spamming.

I have always believed we get more from them than they get from us and there are many ways the country benefits from them.

The only ones among them who I can find reason to dislike are Andrew, his ex wife, and the Nazi spy who abdicated.

“Flyovers over M90 closed on Sunday..”

So, road it is. Yesterday three newspapers were reporting different modes of transport to Edinburgh- road, royal train, and aircraft.

Perhaps the plan included all options and the papers jumped the gun. Anyway I assume there will be vantage points where those who wish to see it pass by can do so?

I`m pretty ambivalent about the monarch. The hangers on should be left out of the picture and only the monarch and immediate children supported.

In the 70 year reign I only saw the Queen twice. Once when she opened the King Malcolm where one of my brothers presented flowers.

The second time was quite amusing. I was in the ARI cancer ward when she visited to officially open the unit. I was pretty ill lying on my bed feeling sorry for myself. The Queen was being shown round the ward. One of the young patients (about 18) who had been in for about 4 months was to be one of the people she met. His room was decorated with some quite racy pictures of Xbox ladies.

The hospital moved him temporarily to a room which was bare.

The Queen walked in and chatted to the lad for a few minutes.

After she left my wife went and asked him what the Queen had talked to him about
He said she asked how he was feeling. She then commented that his room was very clean and tidy for a teenager.

She clearly knew fine well they had moved him

Watching the proclamation of the King in the City of London and it looks rather quite ridiculous. Watching a series of podgy, somewhat unfit looking, older gentlemen, dressed up like English civil War soldiers carrying period weapons like muskets and pikes grudge through the streets. At least when it`s the King`s Guard doing the ceremonial duties they look like they could still do the job that those previously mentioned would have been expected to do centuries ago.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Aside the history of the town/city the sire of Dunfermline was called "Royal Palace", when naming horses many owners like to give a nod in some way to the breeding.

Fairly certain that it was the oaks that Dunfermline won in 1977, it was indeed the same day that Scotland won 2-1 at Wembley and the fans invaded the park at the end ( we took your turf and goalposts too) as the song went.

Her wedding dress was made by Winterthur (Dunfermline company) so that might explain the connection with the horse named Dunfermline.

Edit - after a quick Google check, it seems Winterthur provided the satin that made the dress.

It was a good promo for the often-neglected East Coast countryside. The only jarring note was when the historian who was co-commentating mentioned the spontaneous `English` clapping en route. He quickly corrected himself but it was embarrassing.

I didn’t enjoy his commentary. It seemed a bit biased at times. It was quite moving the number of people who came to pay their respect en-route.

Really wasn`t necessary.
Maybe if there were gantrys built the length of the motorway more folk would have been able to fit in. I dont think the population of Dunfermline could cram on to the few flyovers, or maybe you think they should have lined the hard shoulder.

I think it was maybe more sensible to watch it on tv.

I switched to sky news too as the BBC coverage had a lot of political posturing, and kept switching to London.

Agree TwinPar the scenery was stunning. I’ve no been in Inverness since our last match fixture. A long weekend awaits.

Balmoral Castle is an excellent visit - the route to get there through the hills, then over the river and a walk through the gardens. Stopping at the many whisky distilleries too. Fabulous.

I`m not sure what that comment means. The limited number of streets that the cortege went through in Aberdeen were extremely busy. Mostly were 3 or 4 deep. Clearly the whole of the city was not standing about waiting for her but to suggest it wasn`t busy is completely wrong.

Maybe if you had read the whole quote that I was replying to then you would know what was meant by it

I was talking about sheer number of idiots parking up on the hard shoulder of the A90/M90 not just on the southbound side but also the northbound side which was still live btw then walking over and standing on the central reservation or the ones still on the central reservation southbound who couldn’t get back over once the road had reopened

I`m heading down to London overnight. Papers suggesting we make her a saint.
That has to be the stupidest suggestion I`ve ever heard.

She was already a saint.

The idea of canonisation was a Roman thing.
A biblical saint is quite simply a professed follower or deciple of Christ, nothing more.
All believers are saints.
The Queen, as a protestent, would not be amused.

That`s a relatively recent train of thought apparently.

" is sometimes claimed that the Union Flag should be described as the Union Jack only when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From its earliest days, the Admiralty often referred to the flag – however it was used – as the Union Jack. In 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that either name could be used officially. And in 1908 the UK Parliament approved this verdict, stating that ‘the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag’."

You are correct sir.
A commissioned naval vessel.
Usually only flown from the forward jack-staff while alongside or at anchor.(hm ships at sea only fly the white ensign) the union flag becomes a jack when hoisted at 0800 from 15th February to 31st October, and at 0900 from 1st November to 14th February while in the uk.
Naval tradition calls the ceremony "colours"
The ceremony to lower the flag is referred to as "sunset" or "evening colours".

Hate filled? You have to be trolling, da? I`ve never met TOWK, but he comes across as an articulate, intelligent guy, even if he does have an inexplicable crush on Man U. 😃 Any negative feelings he has are directed only towards Liverpool FC.

I think what we are witnessing in London and on the BBC just now can only be termed collective hysteria, for which there is no cure or logical explanation. How long it will go on for is anybody`s guess.

I`m sure you`re quite capable of defending yourself, TOWK, but I couldn`t help myself. Pretty sure da_no 1 was on the wind up. The BBC are giving the most extreme examples of this collective hysteria a platform. A few days ago, a lass from Ayr told how she caught a bus down to London ( 8hrs) and queued for 5 hrs to file past the Queen`s coffin. She explained that she`d never met her but had seen her on TV and it felt like she was her gran. Eh? Presumably she had another 8hr journey to get home again and maybe hotel or B&B in between. Not cheap.

I wonder what folk in these queues do when nature calls? Does someone keep their place if they obey it or do they go back to the end of the line? And to think the Royals probably don`t give a tinker`s cuss for these loyal and faithful subjects......🙁

Ah, apologies, da. I read most of your posts and the one criticising TOWK was so out of character, I thought you were making a bit of mischief.

I would make a distinction between hating a specific person(s) and what they represent. I didn`t "hate" the Queen, her husband or any of her family, but I can`t deny I don`t feel the love for the privileges they enjoy by reason of birth. Had any of them earned such a position through their own graft and business acumen, I`d probably admire them. I have a number of relatives who are now millionaires, precisely for these reasons, but I don't envy them anything. They`ve sacrificed their lives to achieve what they have but they` won`t take anything more than I will when they go into that wooden box.....

I heard a guy being interviewed on the car radio as I drove to the match. He had queued TWICE in the last few days to file past the coffin. I find it very hard to understand but respect the guy`s right to spend his time as he likes. By the way, the `minute`s silence` at today`s game was barely half a minute.

At the end of the day it’s a dead celebrity - I was gutted when Bowie died but I wouldn’t queue to fawn over his coffin. There is something deeply weird about it all to me. Seems to be actions that a lot of folk wouldn’t do for their own relatives and a whole look at me thing about it.

With the Queen now making the final journey to Windsor and the formalities now almost over perhaps some normality can return to these shores.
The service and proceedings were suitably restrained and free of grandeur. A fitting send off.
Perhaps Sir Lindsey Hoyle will reflect on the hyperbole he spouted yesterday.

I think the return to normality is going to be a big relief for some and a big shock for others.

The tories will have nothing to hide behind now that they have finished their silly election and the funeral is over, and the royals will slowly realise that they have lost their only real asset. Charles is having his dead cat bounce (or should that be queen?) in the opinion polls, but that probably won`t last too long. If he is lucky it will continue until the coronation. If he is unlucky the tabloids will be full of negative stories by Christmas.

I actually think that this event has ultimately damaged the monarchy, at least up here. Before all this I didn`t have any feelings for against having a monarchy but I now feel its very much served any purpose it had. The bonkersness of all the proceedings I`ve seen over the past week seem to be from another time which is completely out of touch with how we live our lives today. I like to think I am a very average, humble sort of guy (albeit with movie star good looks and rapier wit) and I tend to hold pretty much mainstream views. If I`m thinking that the monarchy is now an outdated concept then I reckon the national mood, in Scotland at least, has moved.

Away from feeling there`s a need for a monarchy.

Apparently Dougie Henshall has suggested the Royal coffin was empty.

Is the Royal family that being tourism or is it the history and the buildings? I`m sure the Palace of Versailes (sp) is one of the most, if not the most viewed building in Europe and the French Royal family have been absent a bit.

Well I watched most of today`s proceedings having given most of it a miss since she left Scotland. I found it very moving especially The Lone Piper leaving Westminster Abbey and similarly at Windsor Chapel. The 10s of thousands of people who lined the streets last week in Scotland seem to think it`s something worthwhile here.

That`s a massive majority of Scots not lining the streets by that logic.

No logic. Just a comment.

Elizabeth was a significant feature of all our lives, and her death (and the accession of Charles) is an important point in history, as indicated by the interest throughout the world and the attendance at her funeral of so many world leaders.

I do agree with those who say that queuing for hours to file past the Queen`s coffin is an illogical and slightly irrational thing to do.

But it`s slightly odd to read this being criticised on the forum of a football club, where most readers will have spent years of their lives, and thousands of pounds of their cash, just to watch some guys they`ve never met put on funny outfits and kick a ball about.

In both cases the driving force is human emotion, allied to tradition and history and the feeling of being part of something much bigger than ourselves. Mr Spock was irritated by humans` illogicality and foolish emotions, but then he was only half-human.

Excellent, logical post, Stanza. 😉

Much food for thought. I`ve now concluded that we`re all a bunch of weirdos and Mr Spock was spot on.

I wonder if he was related to our brand new king? 🤔 I couldn`t help noticing some similar facial features. ☺
