 Throat Sweets

When I caught Covid from my grandkids last January, my main symptom was a very dry, sore throat and difficulty in swallowing. I sucked my way through hunners of Jakeman`s cherry menthol lozenges, which provided some blessed relief. A 100g bag cost 59p in most shops but the £ shop in the Kingsgate sold 2 bags for £1. I noticed that the bag has now been redesigned, content reduced to 73g and price has increased to £1. ☹ You can also buy a larger 160g bag for £1.59. They`ve also brought out a compact, retro pack, like the Tunes of yesteryear - prices range from 50p to £1 per pack in different shops. 😨

Speaking of Tunes, what`s happened to them? They were most recently sold without individual wrapping, in a flip top box but have now completely disappeared from the shelves.

Your posts make me giggle GG

From Wikipedia re Tunes:
“Tunes is a brand of lozenge, manufactured by The Mars Wrigley Company in the United Kingdom. It is marketed as a cough sweet, or anti-congestant lozenge, containing eucalyptus oil and menthol. It is a relative of the now discontinued brand of Spangles, and shares the same packaging and dimensions of that brand. In the United Kingdom, Tunes no longer have the style packaging of Spangles.

There was a memorable television advertising campaign for the product with the slogan "Tunes help you breathe more easily". The commercials featured the actor Peter Cleall, who would perfectly enunciate the word "Tunes" after taking the anti-congestant.”

They were relaunched in 2003 but more as a medical lozenge but it didn’t work.

I think you can still buy them on Amazon.

Tunes were thinner in the middle so it dissolved faster, creating a hole. A sharp one at that. Cut my tongue a few times.

Re `Tunes`

One of my favourite memorable adverts*

Man to railway ticket clerk. (Sounds like Bruce Forsyth:)`A second class return to Dottingham, please.`

`Where was that sir,?`

`I said, Dotting ham.`

Next day:

`Now - a second class return to Nottingham, please........ Tunes-zah!`

I just happened to go into a local store yesterday and was surprised to see that they were still selling the old style 100g bags of Jakeman`s at the old price of 59p, with a best before date of July 2024.. Needless to say, I bought enough to see me through this winter and/or another bout of Covid.

Don`tcha just love a happy ending? ....... 😉

Aye, it`s a new design pack, Jake. They`re dearer and I`m 99% sure there are less sweets in it. Let me know how many are in it if you`ve bought a pack and we can compare notes. 😉

I didn`t count but it`s 73g according to the packet. Definitely smaller than the old packet.

Well the old pack is 100g and used to be 50p, rising to 59p during the pandemic, before the new design came in. It`s all Putin`s fault. 🙁
