I saw an old aerial photo of Dunfermline and a building caught my eye that I didn`t recognise. I think it`s the old Regal Cinema. I know it once stood on the High Street opposite what is now the Kingsgate. Can anyone confirm that it`s the building in this picture with the curved roof (white at the side and grey on top)?
It looks like it would have occupied what now the land Primark sits on. If it is then I`d never appreciated the size of the building.

Yes. People queued along the high street and down the lane next to WH Smith. It closed permanently when it went up in flames.

Here`s some more info:
http://www.scottishcinemas.org.uk/scotland/dunfermline/regal.html
I think it had closed and been stripped of seats, projection equipment etc. Developer wanted the site for Littlewoods and it mysteriously went on fire. Amazing how often that happens.
I was a wee boy when it burned down, my dad took us up Townhill way someplace to see the flames.

I remember seeing `Cockleshell Heroes` with my family which I see was made in 1955 so I was far too young to understand it.

Dumfy Press has a photo feature on big fires of the past, including the Regal.
Another one pictured is St Margaret’s Hall, destroyed by fire in 1961.
It was a very large building on the site where the library extension is now. I must have walked past it hundreds of times going to/from the lower bus stance, but was never in it!
Any oldies on here ever inside it?

No Taipar, he only ever worked in cinemas and later inevitably bingo halls as the cinemas closed down in the 70s/80s and he retired.
He mostly managed The Alhambra and The Regal (& occasionally The Cinema) in Dunfermline and the Palace Rosyth locally. He had The Rio Rutherglen and a few others in Fife for short periods in a long career.
He was always in a tux for the evening shows, greeting patrons.

I`m sure there is a huge team photo in East End Park, showing a Pars Team from a bygone era in front of a stand which has Regal Cinema advertised on its roof

This may be the Bill Gourlay of local camcorder club / Talisman Films Scotland.
They are responsible for recording some important local history such as The Opera House and further afield to The Glasgow Apollo etc.
