Looking like all attempts to save the stores has gone .. From Aunty :-

A rescue deal for High Street chain Wilko has collapsed, leaving the future of thousands of jobs uncertain.

The billionaire owner of HMV, Doug Putman, planned to keep up to 300 Wilko shops open, but his bid failed as rising costs complicated the deal.
It leaves the future of more than 10,000 workers and hundreds of stores uncertain.

Some of Wilko`s remaining stores could be sold to rival retailers, such as Poundland or The Range.

I had a wee look into the one at Fort Kinnaird and it was so sad to see .. hardly anything on what shelves were left and everything reduced .. Sad

Didn’t B&M rescue a significant number of stores - or has that fallen through now ?

Falkirk, our nearest, was one named .

They were supposed to be buying 50 stores vee but I don`t know if that is still the case
They were going to close some down as well .. I suspect the ones in the same Towns as B&M stores

Yes, last week B&M secured 51 Wilko stores for £13 million.

As you say, it would not be a sound commercial decision to duplicate stores in the same locality.

A sad day nevertheless for those facing redundancy.

Having said that, last time I noticed, B&M had 2 stores in Stirling relatively close to each other - the smaller existing branch was still trading after they took over the former large Homebase property at Springkerse. That may have since changed of course.

From Aunty :-

The owner of Poundland has agreed to take on the leases of dozens of Wilko shops.

Pepco Group, which owns Poundland in the UK, is expected to convert up to 71 Wilko stores to the Poundland brand.

Poundland boss Barry Williams said it recognised the last few weeks had been difficult for Wilko workers.

In a statement, the company said that Wilko staff would have priority when applying for new jobs at the Poundland shops.

From Aunty :-

The Range is finalising a £5m deal to buy the Wilko brand after a rescue deal for the wider business fell through.

The agreement, which will be announced later on Wednesday, means it will own Wilko`s website and could choose to stock and sell some of its products.

But the deal will not prevent Wilko shops disappearing from Britain`s High Streets, with 400 stores to close by early October.

Thousands of staff will likely lose their jobs as a result of the closures.

Wilko`s rivals have been snapping up parcels of the company since administrators were unable to find a buyer for the whole business.

Appears to be a similar scenario as happened to Debenhams ? The brand name was bought over for online business only.

Wilko is being asset stripped.

TBH it`s a bit of a race to the bottom. All these budget shops sell very similar stuff. Most B&M furniture and garden ware is available more cheaply online. All from the same supplier but with differing brand names on them.

Retail is on its knees. We designed towns and cities with suburbs that rely on cars. Then we built retail parks and wondered why no-one came into town anymore. Now we have the internet and next day delivery so the retail parks start to wither away too.
