Mrs BPP is keeping on at me to get a will sorted .. She is correct we dont have that many years left and it will make things a lot easier for the kids when we pass

I distrust solicitors after a bad experience

Any help .. advice .. tips .. things to avoid .. as always will be greatly appreciated

Advice: avoid Morgans

November is Will Aid month where you can get your will done for "free" (you`re expected to donate the fee to charity and the solicitors do it for free).

This might be a good starting point and has links on how to find and book an appointment: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/free-cheap-wills/

No knowledge of any Dunfermline firms but interested in why not Morgan`s? See their signs everywhere so assume they`re popular for property if nothing else?

We had ours drafted just after son and heir appeared - well known local lawyer, no problem.

Since amended to grant power of attorney, again, no issues.

How much does it cost, roughly, to get one done?

It can cost roughly £100 but it depends on the content.

Happily recommend Stevenson and Marshall, W and AS Bruce, and Malcolm Jack and Matheson.

If you want to go down the FreeWill Month service try Macnillan Cancer.

BPP I’d avoid having a bank / building society as the executors. Our family are dealing with this particular issue right now and it’s utterly demoralising and time consuming.

Try to make children (or relatives) your executors, and specify exactly what you’d like done with property and finances.

Thanks for the replies guys .. I have done a wee bit research and buffy is correct it is around £100 for a single will but I will need to add Mrs BPP which will bump it up to £200 plus adding both my kids as power of attorney will bump it up even further .. so looking around £400 .. plus I need my house title deeds registered and I believe that is around £300 .. So an expensive visit

Joint bank accounts make things easier when one of you passes. Just make sure both of you know where the dosh is.

It may be helpful to know that if you and Mrs BPP don`t leave a will, your estate will be divided equally among any children you have.

Buspass, rumour is you can`t get your mattress down flat for all the shoe boxes filled with twenty quid notes under it so spend some of it and give yourself some peace of mind.

And although my eyes were open
They just might as well be closed

Our parents didn`t leave a will. Dad died long before mum. When she passed away, we sold her house, and our solicitor split her estate equally among her 4 children in a few months.

The problem arrives when parents split up and connect with other partners, maybe more than one time.

My mother`s cousin had split from her husband prior to her passing away in a tragic accident, they had no family and were officially divorced.

This all happened nearly 10yrs ago and the estate is still not settled, including a house worth over £200K.

Because she never left a will they have had to go back through the family tree to try and trace relatives, the search has even been carried out in Canada.

Her mother and father each had 9 siblings!😲

That would have been resolved so much more quickly if they`d lived in The Duchy of Lancaster. The richest man in the country would have had his greedy mitts on it in no time.
