Everyone laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian. They`re not laughing now.

He experienced tragic losses in his private life - both sons died relatively young.

Panicked when I saw the title of this thread, then realised there wasn’t a (D) beside the name. Imagine my relief.

About 20 odd years ago I had a job at Sky TV. One night, the guy next to me was having a right good chortle to himself and he stared gesturing at me to look at his screen and I seen he was talking to Bob Monkhouse. Bob had called up for something and had just started reeling off the gags. I had never really been that fond of him, but I picked up the phone line to listen in, and then my manager came along and before you knew it there were about 10 of us crowded round listening on the speaker phone. This tickled Bob no end, and he started testing out some new material he had been working on, ended up being on for about an hour, reeling off joke after joke. He was even asking us to shout out random subjects and he would instantly give us a related joke. It was truly brilliant. The guy was a comedy genius

He was a major collector of old film and TV show footage and was an expert on the subject, with reportedly the biggest library in the country.

He saved a lot of “lost” material for posterity.

He also recorded his jokes and gags etc. in bound volumes and took these to shows etc. for aide memoire reference.

His book is also well worth a read.

Just got round to watching it this morning. A lovely blend of comedy, poignancy and nostalgia.

Thanks for the heads up, BPP.

Just watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. He was a student of comedy and also a master craftsman at writing and delivering jokes.

The hardest bit was finding it on the iplayer! `Comedy` was easy but I looked under `L` and `M` before I found it under `B`!

I went to the A-Z. Most progs seemed to be classified by surname but not that one. No harm done.
