 Car Insurance Recommendations
Topic Originator: helensburghpar

Just had my renewal quote in(Direct Line). They`re wanting £989.93 for insurance and breakdown compared to £621.36 last year. My circumstances haven`t changed and have a no claims discount.
Can anyone recommend decent car insurance for a Toyota CHR? I`ll check comparison sites but it`s good to get recommendations if possible.
Thanks

All insurance has gone up regardless. Some are blaming electric vehicles (hit one and they`re basically write-offs), others are blaming cost of living, but I think they`re actually just at it as people are doing fewer miles due to WFH.

It`s worth trying Quidco. I think they use Compare The Market and give you £30 after a few months.

Remember to check how many miles you do (compare last years MOT/service mileage with this year`s as you might be paying for miles you don`t use.

Stay with Direct Line. They are a superb insurer. Take my word for it.

Instead, get some like-for-like quotes and haggle with them to be competitive.

Look at money saving expert guide for some tips:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance/

Get the quote around 23 days in advance if you can. They`ll rise before and after this. Probably not a lot but every penny...

Check if you can tweak your job title. MSE has info on this showing how much difference it can make.

Check if adding an additional driver aged 30-50 on the policy helps at all.

TopCashback with TopCashbackCompare gives £45 cashback and uses the same system as confused.com I think.

Consider dropping roadside and maybe legal cover and seeing if you can get them cheaper separately.

Compare the market.

Mines tried to hike my insurance up by 275. Told them to beat it and turned `auto renewal off`.

Managed to get insurance for the same price as last year give or take 15 quid. Nothings changed.

Robbing hoors.

Always turn your auto renewal off and just accept nowadays that you need to shop around and change provider every year to NOT get shafted.

Cheers. I`ll definitely be shopping around. Good reminder about auto renewal too.

Definitely worth calling DL after looking elsewhere and getting quotes.

Most of the time this has let us get them back down towards similar (or sometimes slightly better) price.

It doesn`t alway work though.

I had the same with Direct Line, tried putting the renewal up by 33%, called them and said I had a quote with another company (LV) that was pretty much the same as last years price and funnily enough Direct Line applied a discount and my renewal with them was £3 different to last year. Worth a phone call.

Phoned them today and they offered it at £740 instead of £989. Still £129 increase on last year and getting cheaper quotes elsewhere.

I left DL after over 30 years. They have been very good but had applied a hefty increase this year even though we hadn`t put in a claim for 15 years. Went on a comparison site, phoned them with the quotes and their rep told me he`d turn off the auto renewal for me.

My house insurance is still with DL as it hasn`t gone up and compares well with other providers.

Just to add a little more. I thought DL were at it.

However I spoke ro someone who knows that business well and was told that their car insurance business has made a loss for the last 2 years.

While I find this a little hard to believe, and need to do a bit of further investigation, I thought it was worth sharing.

Apparently other parts of the brand are covering the car insurance brand.

I`ll share if I find anything interesting but thought it was worth sharing for balance.

Thanks for sharing. I went with the AA and saved over £400. My house insurance is with Direct line and is still reasonable.

Direct line are in a bit of a mess. Making a loss so bumping up prices meaning people go elsewhere.

Out of interest does anyone know anything about Cat N cars? I saw a nice car, turns out it`s Cat N repaired. My understanding is this is getting to be very common now due to difficulty sourcing parts. Anyway, I`d read the insurance is higher so did a quick check with two near identical cars but one cat N and one not. Prices back were identical but at no point was I asked if it was cat N or not. I would assume they insurers know already but are you supposed to tell them?

Well done! We`re in the middle of a claim that`s been outstanding since 2021. The other party accepted liability at the scene but then changed her position after (her ex worked in the car business so it feels rather dodgy to me, especially when she moved from saying it was completely her fault to "you`ll never win, you`re wasting your time". The delay is all driven by the other party and their insurers.

The service from DL has been poor but their response to my escalation has been excellent (too good if I`m being honest).

I`d assumed because our two cars were similar and one had gone down, and one had gone up significantly that it was due to the claim. It appears that might not be the case now.

Anyway, will stick with them this year but will consider changing next.

Shame, as my historic experience is that they have been a brilliant company. It`s a shame if they haven`t moved enough with the rest of the market.

Any Cat N that`s been repaired properly has the potential to give years of safe and happy driving. The trouble is, the used car market doesn`t see it that way, so a Cat N is always going to be worth much less than a regular car. You also need to be very sure that the repairs have been made to a high standard.
You need to declare the vehicle as cat N before any quote from insurers.
Although they will already know as soon as you tell them the reg number and some insurers don`t touch certain categories .

As an ex insurance person I can tell you that car insurance is a very difficult business to make a profit in.

My company, who were one of the largest in the UK constantly considered pulling out of the market all together. Motor insurance constantly pulled their overall profits down and was affecting their share price.

They had to do a lot of reorganising and cut back staff to continue. When I retired they had just broken even on motor for the first time in 10 years. This was mainly by drastic cost savings.

DL did my home and contents ins for 116 a month. I said that can`t be right. I got better cover from Halifax for almost a third. Called DL back, and they said they would see what they could do. I told the theiving gits to ram It.
