My son is currently on holiday in the land of the rising sun. He`s been sending us some absolutely stunning pics. Apart from the beautiful buildings and wonderful scenery, I couldn`t help noticing how clean and immaculate everything is. Not so much as a cigarette end to be seen, never mind unsightly litter or dog poo.
Why are we so minging in comparison?

Germany during the Euros was the same - train stations, streets etc looked a state at nights after fans had been there, walked through them next morning and they were spotless.
Bottle return schemes there also helped as the homeless etc would gladly take your waste off you!

I think students at Japanese schools have a scheduled cleaning time each day so it becomes habit.
I remember their fans staying behind after World Cup games and cleaning the stadiums so they obviously replicate their behaviour wherever they go.

Exactly this. We used to properly look after things but now we let them fall apart then spend more money on new things than it would cost if we`d just done the maintenance.
But it`s not just those in positions of power. The general public in the UK are incredibly short sighted. Rather than fix things we just like to point the finger and blame people.

Went to Moldova couple years back for the scotland game and out my morning run passed trees with leaves falling. By time i was at end of street and on way back there was someone out sweeping/cleaning up with a tree broom. Compare that to state of our roads/pavements especially just now is incredible. We really are just a lazy nation.

Dropping litter anywhere convenient is second nature now among many in this country - and not just kids/teenagers.
Pupils at our local secondary would buy burgers etc. from fast food vans and discard wrappers around the playground - they would also throw away loose change received considering it not worth keeping.
The jannie cleared up after lunchtime and collected enough cash over the school year to fund his season ticket at Parkhead !!!

I`d like to say you`re rather harsh, red-star, but other than putting it very bluntly, you`re spot on. Far too many people know their rights only too well but don`t want to know about their responsibilities. You only have to think back to the Covid pandemic and remember the number of discarded face masks, gloves etc, often within a few feet of a waste bin. 🤨

There`s selfishness and laziness everywhere but it depresses me seeing parents setting terrible examples for their kids. I won`t reveal the school but I once witnessed a parent telling the head teacher to mind her own business when she highlighted that the parent had parked illegally. What impression does that give to the child?

Yep, exactly the sort of thing I`m thinking about. I think a lot of it is down to a perceived lack of consequences, I`m all for these cheeky b`stards that don`t toe the line getting a good smack in the puss or even a nice key scratch down the side of their car to make them think twice about their actions

It really rips my knitting seeing stuff by the side of the road thrown from cars
I remember when I was a postie .. I was sent to Musselburgh as they were short staffed
Returning back to the office the traffic lights were red and ther was a young couple with 2 young kids in the car in front of me
I saw the window wind down and a handful of rubbish chucked onto the road
I got out the van picked the rubbish up .. knocked on his window and said What is that all about ? take it home and put it in the bin
He took it back then when the lights turned green he threw it all back out onto the road
We are forever shaped by the Children we once were

I know, I totally agree. As a society too many of us are quick to drop rubbish etc
I honestly believe though that things like not repairing roads/pot holes, only partially cutting grass areas, allowing play parks to fall into disrepair then just demolishing rather than repair/replace, not clearing or maintaining the drainage network until it blocks/floods and all these other little things are having a real negative impact on how people look at the towns they live in.
If it looks like a sh1t hole, folk will treat it like a sh1t hole 🤷🏻♂️
There’s always going to be someone doing something stupid but if we looked after things better, more might have the notion to also look after things better

We have a regular team of volunteers on Saturday morning going out on a litter pick in the Glasgow streets round our church. We do seem to have the mentality that throwing litter down is our right and it`s up to "the authorities " whoever they are, to pick it up. But even in the " very respectful areas" the pupils of very select private schools are not averse to ignoring the ample bin provision and casting their lunch packaging to the ground. I hate seeing litter on my favourite walk so I often take my litter picker and and carrier bag. I think I counted more than 20 face masks in one litter pick in the mile or so from my house during covid.

As well as litter another eyesore around the streets in Edinburgh is weeds. The Council seems to have given up on keeping the roads and kerb-sides free of weeds and they are just left until they wither in the colder weather. Is it the same anywhere else?

Not too bad for weeds in my part of Glasgow, wee eck, but maybe I need to de weed my drive again. The smell of "weed" is fairly common, though, even coming from some of the posh areas. Maybe they`re the only ones who can afford it.

A friend recently remarked how much cleaner Dunfermline is than Edinburgh. I disagreed but it`s been a while since I`ve gone along Princes Street. Was there last week and it`s a midden. Broken slabs, closed down shops, tartan tat everywhere, reeks of fag smoke, homeless people sleeping in bus shelter and in disused store fronts, scaffolding all over the place. What an absolute travesty.

A new one for me that I can`t imagine would ever happen in Japan. I went out for my usual morning run in the Rex Park, behind St Leonards Asda, this morning. There was a trail of smashed eggs around the flat loop I like to run round. At one point, àn empty tray that can hold 15 eggs had been discarded. So, unless the eggs were stolen from the nearby supermarket, someone paid for those eggs and then proceeded to smash them around the park..... 🤔

My work sometimes takes me round the country and in all honesty, Edinburgh city council must be the worst council in the country. It’s an absolute nightmare to travel into and around for work, the streets are a mess, they’ve never updated from communal on street bins in the city centre, parking is a nightmare, now the ULEZ which has driven up the prices of vans - which in turn is driving up prices for customers… I could keep going 😂 but hey, whenever I see them online it’s that councillor who cycles about claiming another victory about something arbitrary

Scott Arthur is actually gone now, NMC. He`s now MP for one of the south Edinburgh constituencies.
Agree with how manky Edinburgh is. I remember driving through Sighthill a year or two ago and there was grass nearly 2 feet high. I think they cut back (no pun intended) during COVID and never returned to the original cutting schedule.
Dunfermline can be as bad for a lack of common sense though. At Duloch Park they introduced the "wild areas" where they don`t cut the grass so as to encourage bees and wildlife. No issue with this even though it`s just an excuse not to cut the grass. However, a smart person who actually knew the area would have "wilded" the area near the south side play park as this area is unusable due to poor drainage anyway. Instead they`ve used an area that was actually usable. No doubt the decision was made by a councillor from Kennoway in an office in Glenrothes.

Not had the pleasure of visiting Japan but i was very fortunate as a youngster to see a lot of the world and Copenhagen was the nicest place i`ve seen. Beautifully clean almost to the point of it feeling clinical.
Wasn`t even the lack of rubbish but the subtle little things like no cigarette ends and even chewing gum squashed into the pavements was pretty much non existent.

My son got back from Japan last week. We were talking about how clean everywhere looked. He told me something even more remarkable. There are no litter bins anywhere in public places. Folk must take their rubbish home....
And there`s more.....
Hotels ask you to take your shoes off in the foyer and place them in "doocots."
Folk mop the pavements outside their homes/shops.

People used to mop outside shops here too but that was when shops were owned or rented by the shopkeeper rather than what we see now with lots of big chains who don`t care. The Dunfermline BID failed because the big players couldn`t be bothered anymore. Dunfermline High Street and surrounding area has so much potential but Fife Council truly are awful. They`d sooner heat Fife House by burning £50 notes than spend any money in Dunfermline.
