Has anyone had this appear on their account before? I have it appearing for what seems to be a cheque being paid in. I can`t remember the last time I paid a cheque into my account so I`ve no idea what it`s for. It`s pending right now but I`ll call the bank if it goes through.

Is it part of your available balance? I suspect not until it clears. I wouldn`t contact the bank if it clears but would if it didn`t.

Nah, it`s sitting as pending. I`m hoping when it comes in it`ll say who it`s from but I definitely haven`t paid a cheque in for months, maybe years!

Mystery solved - now disappeared. I suspect someone with an account very close to mine just put a cheque in and someone typed it incorrectly.

I discovered relatively recently that if you present a cheque from an account that is held in the same bank branch it can be credited immediately to your account - assuming it has sufficient funds.
None of the having to wait three (?) working days for it to clear.

I’m too young to remember pre-decimalisation, but was 1/6d one and half shillings? And £26 was 520 shillings?
So 520/1.5 = 346.67 fish suppers?

I`m not that old (shh) but I still remember when a £5 pint was scoffed at. Now it`s seen as a bargain.
I think the problem nowadays is credit. You see a car and it`s £30k. Same car 10 years ago would be £20k. Both are a lot of money but it`s less noticeable when it`s £200pm Vs £250pm. Same with things like mobile phone contracts. Make it a monthly price and you don`t notice that it`s going to cost 20, 30, 40% more of the contract.
They then turn it into a game. The same ploy cinemas use. Here`s you crap, wee car for £150pm, the mid size for £250pm or the big, specced up one for £300. You don`t need the big one but it`s only £50 more.

^^^ I was born the year we swapped to decimalisation but collect coins and always assumed that one shilling was the equivalent of ten pence (they also look similar)?
6d would be six pennies.
So 10p + 6p would be 16pence whereas 1and half shillings would-be 15pence.

12 old pence in a shilling. 20 shillings in a pound. So 240 old pence in a pound.
The old shilling coins were used as 5 new pence coins until 1990. Still 20 shillings in a pound but now 100 pence.

A shilling was 12 penny`s .. sixpence was 6 penny`s
A fish supper was 1/6d which would have been 18 old penny`s
£26 x 240 =6,240.00 divide by 18 = 364.5
So £26 would have bought 364 and a half fish suppers
I think I`ve got that right .. but I was off the day we got maths :-))
