 Tanker collision
Topic Originator: buffy
Date:   Mon 10 Mar 16:49

Two tankers have collided in the south east of Yorkshire. The US-flagged Stena Immaculate appears to have been hit while at anchor by the Portuguese-flagged container Solong.

37 mariners have been rescued and are accounted for.

Environmental groups are worried about the spill and the natural habitat for nearby bird species. Jet fuel is spilling into the North Sea

I’ve just seen a photo of the ship which left Grangemouth, and it was docked in the Forth this morning at the loading platform? Widtink could tell us what that’s called.

It’s difficult to understand how two tankers could collide.

It`s bloody tough being a legend

No, that’s the one further up the Forth on the Fife side.

I didn’t think I’d be interested in marine engineering and loading bays yet here we are 😂

I’ve just had a wee Google and the one ye can see clearly from the rail bridge is Hound Point (off South Queensferry). That’s where I’ve seen the cruise ships sitting in the summer. I’m presuming they’re being loaded with something.

Raymie, the American tanker was anchored and it was the Portuguese ship which appears to have run into it but you’re right in that radar should have steered it away from danger.

Speculating on the cause is coming to conclusions without evidence - however with all the modern navigational aids etc. you have to wonder.

From Wikipedia

“The terminal is made up of two sea-island berths that can load vessels of up to 350,000 DWT and a vapour recovery platform. Crude oil from the Forties pipeline undergoes stabilisation and gas processing and treatment at the Kinneil Terminal at Grangemouth before being pumped to a tank farm at Dalmeny on the southern shore of the Firth. The oil is then pumped to the Hound Point terminal where it is loaded onto tankers.

The name `Hound Point` derives from a local legend concerning the lord of nearby Barnbougle Castle, currently Lord Rosebery. The legend states that one of the first lords set off to fight in the Crusades, leaving his beloved hunting-hound behind. At the moment the man was killed, the hound began howling uncontrollably, eventually dying of its grief. Ever since, the howling ghost of the hound is said to appear on the Point whenever the present lord is about to die.”

That second paragraph has me hooked!
I’m in the wrong job lol

The MAIB will be all over this already.
Quite how a vessel has managed to plough into another vessel that was anchored in a designated anchorage at (reportedly) 16 knots is anyones guess.
Something somewhere has gone spectacularly wrong .

Unfortunately it looks like one of the crew may have lost their life.

These sorts of events always makes realise just how much we take for granted on a daily basis when nothing goes wrong, and the amount of engineering that goes into all of this stuff. Even reading about the massive size of the ships these ports can deal with is very impressive.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the collision between two ships in the North Sea yesterday.

The Humberside Police say that a criminal investigation into the cause of the collision is now under way, and they are working in collaboration with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

“Extensive work has already been carried out, and we are working closely with our partners to understand what happened, and to provide support to all of those affected," Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Nicholson says in the statement.

The 59-year-old man was arrested “following enquiries undertaken by my team" Nicholson says.

He is not identified, but the statement says he has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision.

The arrest comes after the conclusion of search operations by HM Coastguard for the missing crew member of the Solong, it adds.

“The man arrested remains in custody at this time whilst enquiries are under way, and we continue speaking with all those involved to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”

This may be the latest episode of Russian sabotage in Europe, the man arrested is a Russian national.
Russia are suspected of involvement in train derailment, destroying underwater cables, a plot to kill a German CEO who builds tanks and plane crashes, all since their full scale invasion of Ukraine.

Might just be basic negligence, with the arrested man`s nationality being co-incidental ?

I imagine that for it to be deliberate it would take more than one man..

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

There was an expert on the news who was saying that the teams are incredibly busy to load and offload with really quick turnaround times. They then often use the time travelling to decompress/recover/catch up on sleep.

Not sure how many people were on duty but it could have been something "simple" like mechanical failure or medical incident.

Of course, I suspect we`ll never find out with any degree of confidence given who was involved.

While it`s obviously a really bad incident, hopefully it`s not as bad environmentally as initially feared.

Would normally be a two man watch but who knows , I hung up my sea legs in 2019.
A lot has probably changed since then.
A helmsman and an officer is pretty much the norm these days or at least that was the case while I was still afloat.
Sometimes a helmsman, a lookout , and an officer ... But fewer and fewer companies are doing this to cut down on manning costs.

You know they have been sabotaging infrastructure all over Europe right?
Also evidence of them paying organised crime gangs to sabotage infrastructure.

Pretty concerning that taking out one substation took out the UKs main airport. It`s almost as if putting the majority of the UKs assets in one city is a really bad idea.

It`s not as if they are going to come out and admit that it`s been an act of terrorism, causing panic on the streets of London.

I`d expect we will see a lot more of this sort of thing, deliberate wildfires, banking apps being shut down due to cyber attack, data theft, card payments being unable to be taken in shops. It`s been happening a lot.

I expect the next thing to be all your personal information to be released to the world to see, passwords, private messages, online search history

Would it not be weirder if counter terrorism did not investigate an outage to critical infrastructure?

Should probably be more concerned that Heathrow swapped out their contingency back up for more sustainable options and that they in turn failed.

Where did you hear that crap about switching to more sustainable options?

The airports gets supplied power from 2 other substations and the power from this failed to switch over.

All ground based navigational aids, ATC Tower and runway lights remained fully operational as when power failed to switch generators kicked in. All fully fuelled with enough to last 48hrs.

The problem was no power in the terminals, so no lights, no computers to process passengers, no security scanners etc.

Hmmm - so in your world, either the men killed don’t matter (not as good propaganda?) or Israel have developed super smart bombs that can identify age and gender and wipe out only those that fit the criteria?
