 Midge Bites

Got stranded last night between Inverness and Fort William, for 8 hours last night, after my works van broke down. Had the joy also, of a French driver, hitting my van as I was up on the verge. Absolute nightmare, but anyways, that`s not my major problem. I have been eaten alive by midges and I have reacted horribly to them. Everywhere is covered in lumps, bumps and are as itchy as french connection. Tried antihistamines, calomine lotion and nothing is helping. Anyone got any advice on what to put on them. Happy to hear anything that may help, even auld wives tales.

Many thanks for any advice 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Are you sure it was just midges and it wasn’t horseflies? If it wad the latter, I really feel your pain, as their bites and the aftermath are horrific.

Either way surprised anti-histamines haven’t worked :/

They looked like midges mate. Might be, cos I`m struggling with the amount of them and they`re sore as well as itchy

I am not a specialist but I have been told that if you put a spoon in boiling water then place on the bite it kills the proteins. The only issue when I tried it was my skin got blisters 🤦‍♂️ as the spoon was way too hot. But it did lessen the issue by a number of days. Other than that lather hunners of anti itch cream.

An oat bath.

Much like the dock leaf growing next to the stingy nettle we have been cursed with the midge but blessed with the all-healing porridge.

Lemon juice helps mosquito bites. Might work with their wee cousins too.
I mean proper juice from a lemon not lemonade.

I remember years ago, heading up to Gairloch we stopped at Loch Maree. It was looking amazing totally flat, like a mirror so I got out the car to take a photo and then a dark cloud of midges descended on me. When we got to Gairloch and I had to pitch a tent they were 10 times worse, I was bitten all over, there was over 100 bites.

The pain from them got worse over a few days and I actually ended up using lemon juice, dabbing the lemons on toast myself, which did give some relief, between that and warm baths.

It was quite an ordeal. Over the course of about a week it felt like I had the flu
