He has died, aged 84, in London.

My mum used to talk of his athletics record before he went into politics. He was the fastest 100m runner between 1967-74 and took part in the Tokyo Olympics.

Ming ran the 100m in 10.2 seconds beating OJ Simpson.
He was an absolute gent, always respectful in debate and had those classical liberal values that find allies across the political divides.
RIP Baron Campbell of Pittenweem.

Bletchley, am I thinking of someone else, but did he and his wife not live down near Otterston Loch near Dalgety Bay? I can’t seem to find anything online.

No Buffy, that was Nicholas Fairbairn, bit of a polar opposite to Ming quite frankly.
These tweed wearing Fifers can be easy to mix up though.

One of the last few decent politicians. The current lot could learn a lot from him.

That`s a sad loss, seemed like a good guy.
I`m not sure if I`m just looking at things through rose tinted spectacles, but it seemed like politicians back in those days were, in general, good people, in it for the right reasons. Sometimes I wouldn`t agree with the stance of people like Tebbutt or Portillo but got the impression they believed that what they were doing was for the good of the UK as a whole, and in effect were decent people.
Nowadays those involved in politics seem like a bunch of cretins that are only in it for their own gain.
(I might be totally wrong of course, and perhaps the majority of the political class in the 80s and 90s were actually getting envelopes stuffed full of cash deposited into their offshore bank accounts while they sniffed coke off the backsides of youngsters as they inspected their local children`s home)

Fairbairn lived at Fordell Castle, extinguished a chimney fire there many years ago!🚒

Your totally wrong. Most were rats then and they are mostly rats now. Certainly the WM mob. There were a few exceptions though.
Fairbairn? A disgusting individual….
What an opportunity we missed in 2014.
