Thinking about buying a van and turning it into a camper/dayvan. Anyone here done this?

I`ve not but worth checking on van lifer groups for the best/most reliable vans to buy and what to look out for. Always fancied doing it myself but can`t justify it as it`d need to still be something I could use for the school run etc so not too big but big enough to be bothered a 4 seater and a van.

If you have the money theres a company in Dairsie, they either sell campers or convert, not quite sure which it is or if its both though.
Part of the petrol garage in the main street.

Decided I don’t want to buy a pre converted one as I want to do it bespoke and also because I enjoy a hands on project.
I’ll definitely be looking at the van life groups as I want to speak to people who have done it and try to learn from their mistakes rather than my own!

Early LiamTheTerrible videos are worth a watch. He started off during COVID living in a van and progressed to building them for other people. Really interesting to watch.

I’ve done it both ways. Bought a pre converted one and then converted one myself (VW T4). Much happier having done the conversion myself. Firstly you know what’s gone in to it, and secondly you get it just how you want it. Converting one myself was actually more expensive as I got everything that I wanted. Without doubt, putting a heater in was the best addition, followed by a decent solar panel array.

Look for vans with maximum payload capacity to carry the additional weight after refurb

Dd23, did you go or a deisel heater? I was thinking about getting a large capacity portable power station (jackery or similar) and just using an electric heater.
If I went with a deisel heater I could buy a cheaper, lower capacity jackery.

I put a proper heater in. Runs off gas or will run off mains electricity if on a hook up at a site.
