Absolutely rampant today….shame our 6 Nations ended after last weeks defeat 🙄 surely we cant go all the way and do it now?

Tough one anytime. France seem to be the major obstacle. We should beat Wales , and Ireland look easier than they have for a long time.
We need the bonus v Wales.
I can`t see us beating France, but I couldn`t see the Pars beating Hibs.
It is all to play for.
Knowing us, we will beat France and Ireland but lose to Wales.

Think we need to win all 3 with BPs and avoid them getting any BPs to have a small chance, so cant see it happening. By all accounts nobody predicted yesterdays result either.

Well it’s gave us a chance. Thought our forwards were excellent. Helps having Finn Russell though, brings a bit of class when it’s needed. I’m still questioning GT’s squad selection. The back 3 seems everywhere 🤷🏻♂️

It`s always been hard for Scotland to win the Triple Crown, far less the Championship or a Grand Slam. Rugby going professional has probably made it even harder.
For all the criticism of Townsend he`s made Scotland better to watch and more entertaining. They can now score from all areas of the pitch. Not so long ago they could be camped 5 yards from the try line and you knew they were never going to score.

Papers over the fact we haven’t come close to a 6 Nations title with these players. We lost to Italy before winning this year’s one……..going to now have to win everything by some margin to have a slim hope of the title.

Despite having the best squad in recent years since the start of the 6 Nations I don’t think we’ve ever finished better than third. We need to back up Saturday’s excellent result with a convincing win in Cardiff. Although we’ve beaten Wales the last twice we’ve squandered big leads and held on grimly at the end.

As much as it’s nice to beat England, what’s more likely to be fondly remembered? 1990 or any of the latest Calcutta Cups?

Too young to remember 1990, but 1999 is always a great memory, especially being brought up playing rugby and getting to touch the trophy. That and the 2000 Calcutta Cup will always be a cherished memory.
Townshend has squandered a golden generation though and should have won at least 1x 6 Nations in this time.

We weren`t so much dreadful as they played out their skin and we made errors at crucial stages.
They finally ran out of steam and we took over.
Took a lot of character to come back and Toony got the subs right. He earned the win as much as the team did.

If he does win it, it would be a great achievement, but he now has an incredible hill to climb to do it and play like that v France and Ireland and we get a spanking again.

Again, coaches decisions nearly cost us against the weakest team in the tournament. I think they were -86 points before kickoff and yet we scraped by.
We’ve got the best midfielders in world rugby and they basically saved the game for us. The forward selection was wrong, the game plan was wrong and we could well have been defeated. We should have won 3 from 3 and be top of the championship but we’re not.

Most neutral commentators commended Townsend for bringing on replacements before half-time, something which rarely happens.
Wales`s previous record was irrelevant. The coach has to react to the game as it develops and try to turn things round and that`s what he did. Sport is full of `could haves` and `should haves` but we all know it`s the result that matters.

Cannot understand why the number 12 did not get a red .. I have seen them given for less .. England film stars were poor once again .. If they had put as much effort into playing as they did trying to influence the officials

We’re similar sized nations to Ireland and Wales so wouldn’t that be a better comparison? No? Given that Wales and Ireland have won the 6 nations during Gregor Townsends tenure, while we’ve had the squad of players we’ve got-surely the question has to be asked why we haven’t progressed further than 3rd place? We’ve finished 3rd twice btw. We finished 5th once and 4th the rest of the time. Pretty dreadful given the talent he has at his disposal.

How many clubs do Scotland have to pick players from?
2 , that`s it ....apart from the likes of Finn and a few others plyng their trade in different countries.
The Scottish RFU cannot ( or maybe will not would be more apt) financially support more than 2 fully professional teams .
Dave Cherry for example is currently playing for Vannes in the French pro division 2.
Ireland have 4
Wales have 4 (soon to be reduced to 3)
Italy have 2
France have 14 to pick from.
England have 24 to pick from (kind of ) 10 are top tier with 14 of the other clubs being in the second tier (championship).
These players however are mainly picked for the English A side which is a gateway for future first team selection apparently.
Even if you take the championship teams out of the equation they still have 10 teams to pick from.
So to me the question should be , "why are England so bad right now"?
And more importantly.... Do we care ?
I for one am loving seeing them underperforming 😂

We don’t have 2 to pick from though………our players can go off and play in any team in the world and can be selected for the national side. Unlike England, who only select from English teams.
Townshend has never beaten Ireland and has a losing a record v Wales and France. His win percentage is propped up by beating England and a host of tier 2 nations.
9 years in post now, its not good enough for the players he has had at his disposal.

Imagine the reaction if Steve Clarke`s win percentage as international football manager was skewed by a disproportionate number of wins against England!
Does Townsend really have a `golden generation` of players at his disposal? We certainly have some of the most exciting backs in the world but are our forwards any better than average? They haven`t dominated in any of the matches so far in this season`s 6 Nations.

Townshend has never beaten Ireland and has a losing a record v Wales and France. His win percentage is propped up by beating England and a host of tier 2 nations.
9 years in post now, its not good enough for the players he has had at his disposal.
A losing record v Wales?
Over the last 9 years we have won 6 and lost 3. We won the last 4 in a row.
6 wins and a draw v England who only won 2 out the last 9.
Ireland have had an even better golden era than us and France are France always a great team.
Italy is the inexplicable bogey team.
Another coach may have averted some defeats there but would he have done so well against England?
Some folk just have a fettish about sacking managers.
He has a level record with Wales now - won 5, lost 5……
Italy our bogey team? He’s lost twice against them ffs - hardly bogeys……
We can beat England 6 times, but we cant beat Ireland just once? Come on now…..
You say some folk have a fettish for sacking managers, maybe folk are just fed up of mediocracy and under achievement…..
We have won 6 lost 4.
Ireland have been one of the top teams in the world for some time now. I think the bubble may have burst though.
Out of the 6 wins v Wales, 4 of them are the last 4 matches.
It`s really just France and Ireland that have been stopping us.
No shame there.
We did well v the All blacks and Australia too.
I think we were 4th in the world rankings before the world cup that paired us with Ireland and South Africa. Ireland were a top side then. England Wales and France got easy rides with double ranking points. We dropped a bit due to that draw.
Mediocrity my bottom .

It’s the not winning things and constantly falling short that’s the problem. Folk in here arguing 4th place is acceptable 🤷🏻♂️🤣

With our squad v the recent French and Irish squads I would hope third.
Well I`d hope for 3rd but given the resources of England 4th is no shame.
It`s just tough that when we have had such a good squad, they have been even better

I know it probably goes against the whole point of the 6 Nations but it needs a relegation/promotion in my opinion.

Relegation/ promotion has been talked about in the past and has always been ruled out as relegation would potentially bankrupt the union affected.

It wouldn’t work. Outside of the big 6 of Europe, Georgia is the only nation that comes close and they’re 40points a match behind the worst team in the 6 nations. They definitely need to come up with something though so someone like Georgia can build to compete at the top table. With Italy only really starting to look competitive now after years of being the whipping boys barring a few results-I don’t think introducing more whipping boys would benefit anyone. I do wonder if teams like Georgia should have mandatory numbers of Autumn tests against the 6 nation sides or something like that. Give them 4 games a season against the top tier for say 8 years and see how they develop.

Our squad has been as good as and better than Englands for nearly a decade and in that time they’ve got winners medals and we maxed out at third.
Wales won it in 2021 off the top of my head 🤔
Consistently we’ve got our tactics wrong and our penalty count is far too high. Penalty counts being too high in individual matches is issues with players. When it’s game after game it becomes a coaching issue. Probably because of not applying the correct tactics against the opponent and it ends up with players giving away penalties trying to keep the ball or get the ball back when we’re stretched at ruck time.

It always amazes me that Scotland, with our limited resources, can compete with the big rugby nations far less beat them. 50 points, including 7 tries, against France is fantastic.

Easy to say now wee eck but I called this all week .. not the 50 points but the win .. ask the boys in North Berwick rugby club .. the staff in Tesco`s .. my Laddie and anyone else who would listen to me .. I said that France`s style of open play would suit Scotland ..

Nasty bit of eye gouging on Ashman missed by the ref and TMO seemingly.

Correct wee eck .. I have been disappointed by some of the TMO`s decisions .. When Dupont ripped the ball from Tuipulotu the ball went forward
Also a couple of forward fumbles and forward passes for England tries in other games and the eye gouging was so obvious .. Can Italy beat England ? .. probably their best chance .. Mon the Azzurri

Shame about the bonus point. That will probably cost us the title. Can`t see France failing to get their BP in the last match.
We are likely to miss out on PD.
Pity the head to head isn't used rather than PD .

Just the small task of actually beating Ireland in Dublin. I wouldn`t count out an England win in Paris either. Still 3 teams with a big chance of winning the championship.

England at home? Possible but not in France.
Takes nothing away from a magnificent Scottish performance though.
We gave it absolutely everything until we ran out of steam with minutes to go.

PARot factor in the TMO`s shameful miss on Jegou`s eye gouge which was a straight red .. France down to 14 and maybe no bonus point ? .. all conjecture I know
I fancy England to go all out and beat France .. Canny make my mind up about the Ireland game tho .. heart says win .. head says loss ..time will tell .. Brown and Cummings will be a big miss

Fair play to GT finally getting his tactics right! Amazing what’s achievable when you use the correct approach and pick players in their positions eh! Shame about the collapse at the end though, that’s costs us the championship IMO. The French are ridiculous going forward and England have been woeful so I’m struggling to see how they don’t score a bonus point.
Having said all that, we still need to win with a bonus point in Dublin. Ireland present a different challenge to the French. We’ll need to be on our toes at ruck time and the back 3 need to play well. When we have ball, we can’t waste anything. Game will be won or lost in the forward pack tho.

We could have been shooting for a grand slam, not relying on England for us to sneak a championship win.

Spot on.
Also worth saying that’s as strong an Italian side as there’s been for years but we should still have been winning that game if taking 50 off the French

Italy are going the right way year on year .. They were unlucky not to beat Ireland .. Ireland v Wales was one of the most physical games from both teams I have ever seen .. We don`t want to get mixed up in that on Saturday .. the French style suited us open play where we have always been good at .. England are more than capable of beating France .. BUT will we beat Ireland ?? time will tell

3 line up changes for scotland
Gregor Townsend has brought Max Williamson and Grant Gilchrist into the second row due to injuries for Gregor Brown and Scott Cummings, while Zander Fagerson comes in to start at tighthead prop having impressed as a replacement in last weekend`s thrilling win over France.

5.3 split in the selection is probably not what Townsend would normally pick but there will be some concern over the injuries picked up last week by the backs.
Strong enough 23 but I worry about the second row. Other than last week it’s not been our strength and the forced changes through injury don’t help. The Irish will target this.
A first win at the Aviva would complete a successful season despite the loss in Rome.

I’m glad the French won it. Best team in the championship IMO and it’s even better they won it with a last kick of the match against England.
In fairness that was a huge step up in performance by England but they still got beat… hey ho!!!!
