Interesting expose on vet pricing on BBC breakfast this morning with examples given of people going abroad for their pets vet treatment. One dog owner was quoted 10x the price they would have to pay at their local vet (who refused to comment). Another would have had to put their dog down having been quoted £9k instead going to France & still having a happy pet (also refused to comment).
I have never even considered this to be a thing and it certainly doesn’t work for emergencies but from a future treatment pov is something I will consider although not simple to get to mainland Europe from here. Anyone ever done this?

For me it`s the lack of transparency. Like everyone with a car knows some garages can be a bit dearer than others and will base where they take their car on the basis of cost and feeling of quality. With vets it`s much more hidden. We`re with Inglis but keep meaning to transfer to Three Bridges.

Good news for us as our cats prescriptions cost £86 every 3 months for their flea/tick/work treatment so that helps!

Prices for vets are an obscenity.
I get they aren’t a public service and staff have to be paid by the hour regardless if a quiet day but the prices really put people on small incomes off going and then you have the guilt trip your pet might be suffering.
Having pet insurance is the best way even if you’re paying 20-30 quid a month as at some point your animal might need a sudden operation and can cost £2000 if it falls on a Sunday.

I run a sighthound rescue service, we fortunately have a couple of retired vets who give us their time at minimal cost.
They both say veterinarians today start out as animal lovers, then quickly realise 90% of their job is killing animals and lose any sense of calling to the job.
They prey on people`s fears while wearing white coats and talking science.

There`s a fantastic vet in Livingston , The Pet Hospital, ethical, caring and absolutely in it for the care of animals, actually took our dog off a couple of medications and he was right, she hadn`t needed them.
Outstanding service and the owner is one of the most caring guys you could know. Now i don`t know if this is normal practice but i know if he is worried enough about a patient, he sleeps there, i mean, is that normal?

The Inglis practice on Halbeath Road has people there overnight but then they cover a large area. They also charge a pretty penny!
I saw a similar post on Facebook and it seems no-one agrees on where the good vets are.

Inglis have 9 practices throughout Fife. I’ve always had good vet experience there albeit I know of friends who haven’t. They’re not the cheapest either.

I heard a senior member of the BVA on the radio saying vets have to cover costs etc so would likely just increase their fees !

They have to cover costs but so do vets in other countries for a fraction of the price.
If the vets is owned by a large corporation a whack of the costs is investors premiums.
We should support independent practices.
I also think vets fees should be vat free or greatly reduced. That would help vets and clients.....or maybe they would just bump prices up.
The capped prescription sounds good but if the fee is for each product, add the fees to the cheaper product and there probably isnt much difference.
I think when you take £300 plus for a consultation fee ( how the phuk is that ever justifiable. What are the costs to be recouped?) You shouldn`t be taking £35 admin fee to respond to the insurance.
It`s all rigged between pharma, corporate vets and insurance companies making sure they maximise how much they can bleed us.

Do it asap great practice but you might have to go on a waiting list.

The drug companies have a lot to do with high prices,but some vets could do more. If your pets need drugs,get a prescription,and buy it online,far cheaper.But get a prescription from your vet,so as to avoid dodgy drugs.Not Amazon!

Definitely too far for emergencies otherwise i would wholeheartedly recommend, he even went with being a vet down waiting on getting the right fit, the entire staff are amazing, he saved my dog`s life, no question. Treatments, costs, every option was broken down and presented, exceptional.

Don’t buy Frontline - it is utter garbage! Like most of the “over the counter” stuff, they are useless. Our cats are tick and flea magnets, and that stuff does absolutely heehaw for them. We have to use prescription stuff that kills them off as soon as they latch.
We use Cameron and Greig in Cowdenbeath - never had any issues with them and one of the vets is even able to handle our male cat without the need for welding gloves!

I think in a lot of ways, the normalisation of pet insurance and the number of people that buy it, has led to this. Vets can now charge a lot more when most of the bill is being paid by insurers.
They probably offer more treatments now though, ones where the expense would have put people off.

I would never use shop bought tick or flea treatments.I bought treatment from b .m.My lab got really ill,never again.As I have said,get the proper products,it’s just not worth the risk,for a few Bob,to see a dog so ill ,is so distressing.

As I said in another thread a lot of dogs treatments are just like a humans…
Half paracetamol or half an antihistamine is just as good to see if it has helped instead of a £125 charge and not going to affect the mutt!
It won’t harm them and it has worked a lot of times on my 2 dogs.

I recall my dog being prescribed omeprazole at a very high price and when we got it it was the exact same thing that I am on a repeat prescription for. We didn’t need to reload but I would have been tempted to use my own if I had.

No they are not like humans.I have said this before,ibuprofen will kill a dog,yes you will get away with small doses of paracetamol,but not ibuprofen.That is down right stupid to say they can take human medicine. Would you take your dog to a human doctor surgery?

So for clarity in my case - 1/ it was not ibuprofen and 2/ it was literally the same drug in the same box from the same manufacturer and the line by line insert was identical and it had the human side effects which they explained that they never had the pet version and had this as it was the same thing.
