I grew up quite close to the Glen and spent many very enjoyable hours there as a kid. The maze, paddling pools, aviary and rabbits were part of my childhood but my favourite was the three-wheeled bike facility.
I’ve gone full circle and now live even closer. I’m in the Glen just now, out for a wee stroll and a seat on a few benches, as I recover from another operation.
Whilst many of the attractions are long gone, it’s still a wonderful place, especially on a day like today.

They’re twa different folk Sam 😂 despite the brotherly Italian connection.
I love the Glen too, Raymie. The hothouse, the gardens and aw they braw trees keep me entranced. I do wish they’d bring back the paddling pools, though.

The Glen was a big part of my enjoyable childhood as well .. I had an Aunt who lived in Headwell Rd .. so every visit to her ended up in the Glen .. Also our Sunday school trips were at the Glen
It was a fabulous magical place for a child .. I took my own two kids there as well but sadly the aviary and reptile house were gone .. still great day out though
We are forever shaped by the Children we once were

They should definitely reintroduce the little cycling bit for the kids, that was actually really important in learning me the laws of the road in cycling. They have something similar up at Townhill Park, they should bring it back down the Glen

The Glen is fantastic but another example of Fife Council failure.
The museum has been shut for years, the glass houses are closed as they need repaired, the peacock sanctuary leaks every time it rains and there`s nothing done about off leash dogs.
Fife Council really does need to get a grip on Dunfermline before it ends up a complete dump like Kirkcaldy.

There was an informal meeting with the Carnegie Trust last week regarding a project for Pittencrieff House. It’s hopeful of turning the former museum into a virtual and informative space providing the public with the history of the Glen.
There is currently a gofundme for the peacock house organised by the volunteers who work there.https://www.gofundme.com/f/rescue-the-aviary. They’ve nearly reached their target.

Agree Jake.The council doesn’t seem to appreciate the asset,they have got in the glen. In my opinion,rather than putting a square in the high street,money would have been better spent,helping the lovely people who look after the peacocks,and give them decent funding.That square is going to be buckfast square,stinking of urine,mark my words. That money could also have been spent on cameras,and dog wardens,to make us feel safer.Oh! but wait,that’s too sensible.Yes I know,suggestions have been invited, but it will be,we haven’t got the funding,same old.

Very few wanted the stupid square..Personally, I`d have liked to have seen it return as Randolph Street. I can`t remember the street existing but I`ve seen photos of what was lost. Surely at a time where we have a housing crisis it would have made more sense to sell the land for some town houses or flats? Certainly better than a crap square.

My family didn`t return to Italy for 8 years after we moved to Scotland in 1960. The only affordable journey was by train and ferry - no budget airlines then - and that took 3 days.
This meant I spent most of my summer holidays in the Glen. Our favourite spot was the flat area down from Andrew Carnegie`s statue. There we played football for hours and hours using makeshift goals from T-shirts from the Skins team.
I remember a succession of buses arriving in the car park at the junction of Coal Road and Pittencrieff St. Hordes of kids and chubby parents would pour out. The mums would spread blankets on the ground and cover them with picnic goodies. The kids would run around and the mums would shout in their West Coast twang, "Ur ye wanting a bo`tle eh ginger, Sammy, Wullie", etc. 😀
Not your average Sunday League player.

Agree with the comments about the square it just seems like a waste of money and maybe it should have been spent on the Glen and even the public park restore the bandstand for example.
On the Glen itself though it`s a brilliant place to spend a couple of hours.
Also to add some of the events on at the Glen the last couple of years Bruce Festival, food and African festival and then later in the year Outwith festival all cracking days in the Glen.

I’ve just done past the new square and there has been some additions and it looks better, but I think it will be frequented by wee idiots and put folks off. It’s still pretty bland and not value for money.
I’d forgotten to mention the events that get put on in the Glen. All very worthwhile and enjoyed by many.
The cafe in the Glen, I believe is council run and offers very basic fare. This really is a waste of a facility so well located and could be far better utilised and provide an improved service.

These posts remind me that in Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy was once an animal zoo with farmyard animals.
Passing by the male donkey who was having some lady thoughts, my daughter was excitedly shouting, Dad! Dad, Look! That Donkey has a hose! 🤦♂️
