in the last month or so my laptop has been running slowly especially browsing.
the laptop is Asus, 6 years old.
with the help of AI I think I`ve tracked the problem down.
after clearing out cache and files etc still a problem.
then it suggested to disable the IPv6 protocol.
bingo, I`m now back to normal

I haven`t used my laptop for about 6 years .
Bearing in mind that windows 10 used to update about once a week I shudder to think how long it would take to update if I was to ever fire it up .

My laptop is running slowly. Any downside in disabling this? My laptop use is pretty basic now. Just used for browsing and emails.

I have read that some web pages may not work by using IPv4 but there is an option in the windows configuration to primarily use IPv4 then if it is not working switch to IPv6 automatically. That would be the best solution.
Currently turning it off completely is not the preferred solution and the suggestion is that there is still issues in IPv6in the IPv6 routing
This is what I read anyway but try using AI to advise you as you cannot break something too much as you can always revert.
Search Guidance for configuring IPv6 in Windows for advanced users in Microsoft and it will advise.
You can use test-ipv6.com in your browser to test and get feedback to your connection.
If you are mostly using your phone, download an App called Perplexity AI Tool to your phone then search Happy Eyeballs. It will guide what you want to do.

Generally the problems should be limited to those with more complex set ups as some of the newer software relies on ipv6, or if you use the hardware for things like tv, security cameras etc. It doesn`t sound like you do.
I would give it a go and see if it helps speed things up.
Over time I expect more of the security updates (Microsoft etc) will rely on it but I dont think we are quite there yet. Funnily enough they say that moving back to ipv4 might reduce performance but I`ve only ever heard about folk with old laptops complaining about degrading performance.
There may be some newer websites that you struggle to use (you could simply address this if it happens) as it likely won`t be an issue.
The final point worth noting is that ipv4 addresses are scarce these days. So a bunch of telecoms companies have been looking to flog off spares and move folk to ipv6. So if these changes are made you might find it causes some network issues...... likely not, but there have been loads of times when I have made a change to stuff and end up getting way down a rabbit hole when I have made change on change on change.... basically if you make the change and it gets worse....just change it back again!

IPv4 is original it has a limited set of numbers e.g. 123.123.123.254
and I think running out
whereas IPv6 has massive range of addresses.
I seem to be working better with just IPv4 but I`m not doing anything fancy.
