Wait for it………

Only worry is no centre mids on bench. So only real option is dropping Todd back into middle if one of other two gets a knock etc

I am watching the Thistle players go through their pre-match drills. I am surprised how high-tempo they have been. Hopefully, they will tire themselves out.

Can only comment on the 2nd half but I thought we played okay. Lacked a killer touch but happy to see us have the majority of the play. Todd very unlucky to hit th post as Kane for a 2nd. Moffat should have won it.

Cracking result. They offered more first half, lucky to only be one down. But we had the push 2nd half and there was only one team gonna win.

Chalmers miles off it, offers heehaw. Hopefully that settles the debate.

Chris Kane was unlucky with a late chance that hit the post… Matty also hit the inside of the post.

A good game considering the wind, both teams going for it, probably a point was about right, we hit the post twice second half, Thistle had 2 cleared off the line in the first. Moffat and McInroy could have won it late on. Was a good watch, the penalty was the only thing the ref gave us. Still in with an outside chance of 4th, we can go and throw everything at Airdrie next Saturday.

I thought it was a very good game. Both sides could have won but we probably had more chances but they didn`t need the same number.
Ref was bowff but gave us a soft penalty from where I was.
We had them on the ropes in the last 10min but we had a few mis-passes and Moffat was a contributor but still tried.

I thought Joe was OK, no-one had a bad game and everyone had to work hard to keep them out.

A draw was a fair result…….

Both teams had their chances & the wind had a large part to play in the game.
Team looked okay, really like Kane through the centre he leads the line well.

Hopefully we can continue this next week at Airdrie.

Good point but can’t say I enjoyed that. It was frustrating mainly.
We stated brightly, culminating in Kanes header straight at the keeper, then we stopped playing or were just out played for the rest of the first half. We were probably lucky to go in at HT only 0-1.
Second half was much better but it was a lot of huff and puff…. too many misplaced passes and quite a few players seemed “ off “ today. Don’t think we would have scored if it was not for the pen although our luck was out again hitting the wood work twice. Patrick struck the post too late on so a draw was probably fair. The pitch and the strong wind were not conducive to playing silky soccer though it has to be said.

A draw seemed fair and I`ll take it after the first half, when they could have been 3 ahead. MFW has been great since joining, but that was a bad mistake for their first chance off the line.

Better second half, where we had a bit more control of the midfield. Kane, Otoo and Welch-Hayes were all very good today for me. KRH also good in spells.

Chalmers as usual getting flack, which I thought was unfair - he looked for the ball, tried to pass forward and tracked back well when needed.

Brian Graham is clearly a good player, but is very hard to like when he acts like that, constantly grabbing defenders and hitting the deck wanting free kicks. He should have been booked first half for what was a really pathetic dive.

Apart from the penalty call the ref was dire again. Not sure what he was playing at second half initially playing advantage for us, then changing his mind and calling back the free kick as we got to the edge of the box.

Another good point though, well done lads.

Linesman had an absolute shocker today was a waste of time him being there. Some very questionable decisions he missed. As for the ref how that`s not a booking for the challenge on Kane early on is beyond me. Clearest booking you`ll ever see. Then there was our penalty. I would be raging if that was given against us but I`ll take it.

Chalmers wants too much time to make passes and in this league the time just isn`t there. Half arsed challenges and thats being kind. Night n day from Hammy. He is good on his day. But there is a reason we`ve Hammy n Otoo in the middle now. On a side note. What has happened to Josh and his crossing? I`d keep Paul Allan for set pieces and dead balls alone. He`s the only one who can swing one in.

We started the game really well with good intensity and had a good early chance with Kane`s weak header. It looked to me that it held up in the wind as it came over, causing him to misjudge the flight. From 10 mins in until half-time, we really struggled to get out of our half - short stuff didn`t work and longer balls got nowhere. It did feel like they were likely to score and 1-0 at half-time was about right.

We were better in the second half, but it was frustrating beause we kept making mistakes when we had the chance to get a ball in and so it usually came to nothing. For most of the second half, they looked fairly comfortable with a 1-goal lead, though it was a great ball and a great run for Todd`s shot off the inside of the post. Until we got the penalty, I think that was our only serious chance.

A penalty out of nothing, well hit and scored, and the game changed again. From then on it was quite open - we probably had the better of it but we also looked open at the back as we pushed up. We were the liklier team to get a winner but it wouldn`t have been too much a surprise had they scored again.

Where did we get that clown of a referee from? It didn`t look an especially difficult game to referee but he did his best to make a total mess of something fairly straightforward. Set the tone early when he didn`t book Muirhead for a tackle through the back that is a booking every single time and then had that dreadful spell in the middle of the second half.

Interesting tactically today. In the first half it seemed to be back to that system of switching between a 4 and a 5 at the back, though looked to me to be mainly a 5. Earlier in the season it was Josh Edwards on the left who was moving between the two lines but today it was Hosler on the right. I`m not sure it suited him all that well and I don`t think he had a particularly good game - his frustration came out with that stupid booking for dissent. I know it`s a crap and annoying decision, but he has to just get on with it rather than greeting petulantly about what was only a shy going the wrong way. Looked a more rigid 4 at the back in the second half which probably suited us better.

It was a good end to the game after it went to 1-1 but up til that point I don`t think it was that great to watch. But it`s a decent enough point from a goal down - both sides had some good moments in the game and a draw felt pretty fair to me.

Our goal was having a charmed life in the first half and I thought we were maybe going to get away with it but eventually they did score and we were lucky to get to half time only 1 goal down. Much better performance in the second half and we opened them up at least twice and were unfortunate not to score after some good football. I was impressed with Otoo driving us forward in that second half although he doesn`t always quite know sometimes whether to shoot or pass at the end of his drive forward, never the less it must give the team a lift to see him putting pressure on the opposition with his powerful runs. Quite a soft penalty I thought but least said about the ref. the better. Both teams trying to get winner at the end but draw was probably about right.

Agree with Socks that it was an interesting game tactically, particularly in the first half. We seemed to surprise them by playing two up initially with Jak and Kane, meaning that Otoo had to cover the left. Once they adapted to this, they then had their one really dominant spell of the game with the two cleared off the line and the goal. McPake then seemed to switch to the more traditional 4-3-3 with Jak going left which meant that there was more space “between the lines” for Todd and in particular the now central Otoo. Kudos to the manager for being prepared to switch things up, make positive substitutions and go more direct in the latter stages to try to get the win.

I thought it was a good game in very difficult conditions - both teams would probably argue they deserved to win. Kane got stronger as the game went on and Otto and Welsh-Hayes were very good. The team looks so much more solid with Bene back - a real good old fashioned battle between him and Graham today (although on another day he may have seen a second yellow for a challenge the ref didn’t deem s foul). I’m afraid I’m with those who sees Chalmers as the weak link but with Hamilton, Allen and Summers out he had to start today.

Good crowd as well- felt much busier in the Norrie.

PS to my last post just pointing out we never won 1 single header of these long throw ins today. Do we actually aim for somebody or do we just randomly throw it into an area in front of the goals. I think we actually managed to score 1 goal through this tactic earlier in the season but nothing since. Need to start targeting a single player better.

I think Edwards normally aims for MFW, although he strangely doesn`t really jump or attack the ball in the opposition box. I can understand using the long throw in those conditions but we should try to vary it a little more, throw it in some different areas and with a bit more movement, we are very static with most of them.

Our first goal last week came from a shy from Josh Edwards. We also had two other chances from them in the first half of that game.

For most of the season, they haven`t been a great threat but it felt different last week and even today it seemed to come in with a bit more pace and better flight. I wondered if he`d looked in detail at the video of the Morton game and had a look at Lewis Strapp`s technique. The balls he gets in are really quite impressive.

I wondered if he`d looked in detail at the video of the Morton game and had a look at Lewis Strapp`s technique. The balls he gets in are really quite impressive.

I love Josh. But his crossing and balls in this season, overall, have been shocking.

I thought the referee was far too chummy with the Thistle players for my liking, particularly with Graham. I noticed a few smiles and winks towards Thistle players in the first half from where I was sitting and decided to watch the ref from then on. He behaved as if he was one of the Thistle buddies and I was gobsmacked when he gave the penalty (although it clearly was one). Referees should be impartial at all times.

Spot on. Very swift yellow for KRH for protesting. Not so quick for the same crime for their player. Letting play roll but then we took attack and it was stopped. Said before. Taking that penalty all day long.

What i liked is when we did score the penalty, there was no over celebrating, ran back to our own half to quickly restart the game, no trying to play for a point, which i admire alot as some teams would`ve just played for the point

Hayes is an upgrade on Comrie, far better footballer. Would love to keep him if possible.

I think there’s every chance we’ll keep him. Living are going down and will need to make massive cuts to their squad.

While I like Hayes, still prefer Comrie. Be great to have both as options though!

I think the wind must have been a factor. Thistle presumably won the toss and elected to play “the wrong way”. About a minute after kick-off I looked at the corner flags to get an idea of which way the wind was blowing, and they were blowing in 4 different directions, so I guess the it was swirling to say the least.

Whatever the reason, I thought we were a wee bit off it today – certainly in the first half. 0-1 was about right – Kane should have done better with his header (was that the only real chance we had?) and MFW nearly flogged one – a good save from Deniz and then Bene (who you see just ambling back in the highlights) gets it off the line. MWH also with a goal-line clearance and then the third one spins in after several chances to clear it.

We were better in the second half – the penalty looked soft to me, but well taken, and then we could have won it, which would have been a little harsh on the Jags but not grand larceny. Moffat and Todd might have done better with their chances (Todd’s second, in his case) and Moffat might have shown more composure when he went round the keeper. At the other end Bene and MFW made a couple of timely blocks which helped.

Overall, not a classic but a game we’d almost certainly have lost a couple of months ago.

For anyone in doubt of the penalty, go to the game thread on PnB, there is a short clip showing it to be a stone waller.

Ep.16 of East End Tales is out now with Steven Mill

Yeah, on P&B it does look like there`s contact and, given that Kane has his back to Muirhead, it`s unlikely he would react unless there was. It`s yet another example of a defender making a daft decision when his opponent is not making a direct threat on goal.

Not a bad game yesterday, some good chances created by both teams and probably a draw being a fair result.
I couldn`t fault any of the players for effort.

Interesting to see some people have a bit of a pop at Joe Chalmers, who I thought was okay. I was speaking to a friend whose son is a younger Pars player and he says that Joe Chalmers is the best professional at the club, he`s a very good trainer, puts a lot of work into it, and is great with his team mates, especially helping out the young players and trying to pass on his experience. All the young players look up to him as a great example of how they need to conduct themselves to carve out a professional career. I guess he wouldn`t have been at Celtic till he was 23 if he wasn`t doing something right

I thoroughly agree Joe Chalmers never hides and he had a good game on Saturday. Much of the abuse directed at him is completely unjustified.

Nice touch from Thistle.

During Saturday’s draw at East End Park against Dunfermline Athletic, Steven Lawless left the field injured midway through the second half.

Following assessment on Saturday from our physiotherapist Robin Dicke, supported by the club doctor and medical department at Dunfermline Athletic, Steven saw a specialist in Glasgow earlier today.

The outcome of that appointment is confirmation that Steven has ruptured his Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery later this week as he starts a lengthy rehabilitation that will hopefully see him returning to the Firhill pitch in early 2025.

All at Partick Thistle Football Club wish Steven the very best with his surgery later this week and will give him all the support necessary to aid his return to full fitness.

This is devastating news for Steven and we know the red and yellow army will also offer their very best wishes to a player who always gives his all for the club.

Partick Thistle Manager Kris Doolan said: “First and foremost, we’re all gutted for Stevie that he has sustained a very serious injury during Saturday’s game. It was an innocuous incident at the time but it became clear soon after the full-time whistle that it was going to be a very significant injury. Thanks to the diligent work of Rob, our physio, Steven will undergo surgery later this week with one of the very best surgeons in Scotland.

“There’s no denying that it is a blow to lose one of our most influential players to a season-ending injury. However the most important thing from all of us now is that we do everything we can as a club to support Stevie and help him in his rehabilitation journey ahead and we all look forward to the day where we see him stepping back onto the Firhill pitch in red and yellow once again.”

Finally, Partick Thistle FC would also like to thank Dunfermline Athletic physiotherapist Craig Reynolds and Dunfermline Athletic club doctor Paul Grealis for their help and assistance provided after the full-time whistle on Saturday.

Sometimes the most serious injuries arise from innocuous incidents. I remember at the time wondering why Lawless couldn`t just crawl off and be attended to off the pitch but it was obviously a lot more serious than it looked. Let`s hope he makes a full recovery as quickly as possible.

This illustrates the point I`ve made before. Every week, these young men go to their place of work and put their health and wellbeing at risk for the entertainment of a few thousand people, some of whom repay that by shouting abuse at them and insinuating that they`re a waste of space. Sad, really.

I suppose the reaction of the fans is because so many players now indulge in time wasting tactics to take the edge off the game and disrupt the attacking team`s momentum. Steven Lawless just doesn`t seem to be a player who would do that. The fans were annoyed perhaps because he decided to sit down on the pitch, when he could have easily moved a yard or two and been off the pitch. It`s not easy to know when a player is play acting or seriously injured but I`m sure we would all wish him well in his recovery.

Chris Kane`s take on the penalty decision :-

Chris was in no doubt that the penalty award by referee Calum Scott for Aaron Muirhead’s challenge was the correct decision:-

“A lot of people might give me stick for it but he catches me right down my Achilles. My boot nearly came off as well, it’s a penalty. They will think it is soft but at the end of the day it is. I’m just thankful that I put it away.”
