As expected the Uk/Ireland bid has been ratified.
Games will be played in all five countries with the Scottish games (6) played at Hampden.

I`m not familiar with the Irish grounds but I was surprised there was only one Irish stadium being used. Take it there`s no big stadiums on the west side?

Whilst pleased a Scottish stadium will feature, it`s probably the worst of all the suggested stadiums listed.

"Windsor Park in Belfast will be the lowest graded British stadium used."

Windsor parks capacity is too small to host a WC match. They`re going to refurbish / rebuild Casement park for the NI stadium.

The Casement Park project ,is 50/50 no government to take decisions, costs went through the roof, Loyalists want Windsor Park refurbished, as Casement was home of GAA.

I can see Casement not happening and either Croke Park or Murrayfield being used as a contingency.

Listened to Tory MP, Lucy Fraser on talksport about an hour ago.
Embarrassing interview. Kept repeating things and clearly unprepared.
Also, it was all about Wembley.

Surprised?

There’s plenty. Cork has a new 45000 seater stadium. It’s a complete joke that Scotland and Ireland only get 1 venue.

Let’s face it, it’s an England bid with a token venue in each other country so that they can help fund it.

This. How many games will be played altogether? Even if the games were divided up according to the population of each country, the other countries would surely get more than one game?

Surprised none of them have told England today it......

Eta. I've just read the OP which says Scotland will get 6 games. JnrB says just the one. Which is it?

Celtic Park, Ibrox, Murrayfield and Hampden are all More than capable of hosting these sized games. Joke decision

Does it also mean that if each host nation qualifies then their 3 group games will be on home soil?

Or will England have to play a game at the Aviva if they are drawn in that group? Fat chance of that happening!

Final at Wembley - we know how that went last time 🙄

This is just a big show from the UK Parliament to show that the UK is “better together” and that Brexit “worked” - only including the RoI because Belfast doesnt have any decent stadiums the now…..

There will be 51 games in the tournament. Sky Sports` understanding is that only 28 of them will be in England, with 6 each in Scotland, Wales and Eire, and 5 in Northern Ireland.

If that`s correct, England is significantly UNDER-represented, with about 78% of the population of the British and Irish Isles, but only 55% of the games.

Admittedly the most important games could well be in England (or maybe Cardiff) but there`s absolutely no justification for whingeing about the shares of the other nations.

Thanks for clearing that up, Stanza, although maybe it would help if I learned to read things a bit more carefully. It`s one venue for Scotland, featuring 6 games. I`d read JnrB`s post as one game each for Scotland and Ireland. 😞

If Scotland is to get 6 games, why could venues such as Celtic Park, Ibrox and Murrayfield not be considered for at least one game each, possibly two?

Is it not just a way of distributing income amongst the 5 football associations of the UK and Ireland? It will be interesting to see what Uefa comes up with regarding the way the host nations can qualify though.

Thinks its still undecided.

There has been some talk of all five nations trying to qualify with two `backstop` qualification spots available for those who miss out, with either the highest-ranking nations who failed to qualify going through, or the two sides that come closest to qualifying.

However, it has been said that there are some reservations within Uefa about offering a `backdoor` entry to nations who have failed to qualify, as well as its potential impact on the normal qualifying process.

2 automatic positions for host nations, but expected that all 5 will take part in qualifying - will only get awkward if only 2 teams qualify through normal processes.

English FA already said they will compete in normal qualifying campaigns.

Pundits reckon it would make sense to play in these as would keep competitive fixtures going and not spending a year playing friendlies.

It just me that prefers having these big tournaments hosted abroad?

Even for the players of Scotland, rarely make a tournament and when they have they play their games…….at Hampden.

I’m sure there is a bigger buzz if they were off to Australia/South America for the World Cup and they’ve got Germany this time for the Euros which is good.

I get the playing in a big tournament in front of your own fans explanation but I dunno how appetising that really is for the players.

Considering the organisation involved, I highly doubt it Jake.
And it will be a cast iron guarantee that the final will be at Wembley if the FA are involved. Not that we can complain cause Hampden is crap.

It’s simply cash. Any money outside Hampden goes to whoever owns the stadia.

Exactly. I wouldn’t want a single football generated pound going to the SRU. Likewise, for all their faults, and the issues some have with Hampden, better the cash goes to the national association than the Glasgow clubs.

They`d be as well giving England the trophy now

"At 10 stadiums across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Principality Stadium in Wales is expected to host the opening match and Wembley will stage the semi-finals and final, as it did at Euro 2020"

It`s bizarre - in every other tournament pretty much ever the semi`s are at two different venues. Euro 2020 was an exception which made sense as it meant less travelling for at least one finalist. This tournament being just in the UK and Ireland doesn`t really justify having both semi`s at Wembley.

It’s an awful arrangement - I’d much rather see 2 grounds from each country - one on the east and one on the west of the central belt. For Instance here Hampden and Murrayfield. Try and make it accessible to more of the countries population.

Having both semis a day apart at the same stadium could provide issues with the playing surface too? I`d be surprised if they were both held there. It`s never happened before to the best of my knowledge.

Having 4 sets of fans in an area at the same time probably isn't an idea the police are going to be happy with either.

As mentioned above, Euro 2020 had Wembley for both semifinals and the final. That was planned before covid, as uefa wanted all the semifinalists together to minimise travel iirc. It was kept that way when covid happened.

Previous Euros held in more than one country:

2000:
Semi-finals in Brussels (Belgium) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).
Final in Rotterdam (Netherlands)

2008:
Semi-finals in Basel (Switzerland) and Vienna (Austria)
Final in Vienna (Austria)

2012:
Semi-finals in Warsaw (Poland) and Donetsk (Ukraine
Final in Kyiv (Ukraine)

And in the only World Cup (so far) to be held in more than one country:
2002:
Semi-finals in Seoul (South Korea) and Saitama (Japan)
Final in Yokohama (Japan)
.
It`s a lot simpler to get from Cardiff to Wembley ...
