 Queen`s Park Game Postponed
Topic Originator: Paralex

What are the prospects of game on, likely team selection etc. Weather may be slightly wet but nowhere near freezing.
How is the pitch faring after the burst pipe?

Im sure the pitch will have had the bulk of the water swept off and repaired by now. Weather supposed to be above freezing tomm so hopefully gives time for the pitch to thaw out.
Team wise I hope we can get eater Otto or Hamilton back in midfield.

Will the forecasted rise in temperature be enough to render the frozen pitch playable ?

Unless the USH has made some sort of recovery I cannot see 24hours of temperatures between 1and 5 degrees undoing several days hard frost. My money is on a call off, though I hope I`m wrong.

Normally the area under the main stand is the concern. Given the mess of last weekend I’d expect it to be the stumbling block again. A wee update on any repairs or issues would be welcome.

I was in Germany this week and the temperature swing was similar to what is predicted. Surface snow has gone from a hard frost yesterday. So I will made the bold prediction and say it is 50/50! 😬

Dunfermline Athletic can provide the following update on the condition of the pitch at KDM Group East End Park.

Following last Saturday’s postponed match, the issues within the under soil heating system have now been resolved, the excess water drained and pitch repaired. However with the minus temperatures setting in early this week, we have been unable to test the under soil heating system fully and as a precaution it has not been turned on ahead of Saturday’s match.

At present the pitch is currently frozen, but with temperatures due to rise tomorrow afternoon and Saturday ahead of kick off we are hopeful the Queen’s Park match will go ahead. Any further updates will be communicated to supporters in due course.

The issues have been resolved but it can’t be tested due to adverse temperatures - are these not the conditions that it’s designed to work in ?
I can understand the club not wanting to compromise the system if it’s going to cause more problems in the short term though.

Could be wrong, but does USH not prevent frost forming as opposed to melting the frost?

Could be the case that it would just be a waste of money turning it on too late

The way I see it is the risk assessment.
If we turn it on and it breaks = game off 100%
If we don’t turn it on, therefore doesn’t break
Game off risk maybe 50%.

I would have thought that before they backfilled the hole, the engineers would have tested the pipework.

Maybe the water in the pipework is frozen so they don’t want to run the pump against blocked pipes for obvious reasons.

Aye but it would only have been a pressure test the fact that the ground is frozen already wouldn’t give any indication if the system was actually working correctly as has been pointed out above it only prevents frost it doesn’t melt it

I wouldn`t have imagined that the pipes would have frozen, since my admittedly tenuous grasp on the subject, would lead me to believe that the pipes would be located below the level of the frost affected ground. The frost, I would consider would affect the top 2 or 3 inches (50-75mm) and the pipes would be at least 6 inches deep, possibly 12 inches (300mm).

Assuming we have game on, what is the likely lineup?

Mehmet

Comrie, Hamilton, Malachi F-W(or Otoo), Edwards

O`Halleran, Allan, Chalmers, Moffat

Wighton, McCann

Looks like a decent lineup to me.

Yes, I`d forgotten about Comrie. In that case, O`Halleran moves back one and Summers comes into midfield or Otoo moves to right wing back or midfield but I think he favours the left side.

In my back garden, which doesn`t get much sun, the surface water isn`t draining because it`s still frozen underneath. The main problem tomorrow may be waterlogging because the surface water may take some time to drain off.

From the rough car park behind the NE Stand the pitch looked good at 16:30 today. Extremely good chance this game will be on. All snow and ice in the surrounding areas has gone.

it might look good on top but thats not the problem.

"I’d imagine a back 3 of Fisher, Hamilton and MFW with Otoo in midfield"

Otoo is the only one that will be on the left so it will be MFW-Fisher-Otoo at the back IF Fisher is available, it not then Hamilton be in the middle.

sounds as if McCann wont be available going by the latest piece in the Courier.

Lewis McCann is still described as having a 50-50 of being available but Dave added that the availability of both Sam Fisher and Ewan Otoo is a boost:-

“Lewis’ is still feeling his hamstring a little bit so we’ll have to be very careful with that and see how he is on Saturday. Sam Fisher has been back training and Ewan Otoo has been training again absolutely fine.  So, we’ve got a few players that will be added to the squad who have been missing.”

It also gives us another week to find reinforcements. The problem next week could be a lack of match fitness.

We just had a full week and no signings. Won’t be surprised to head to tannadice next weekend in the same scenario. Piling the games up won’t help the squad either

Nothing happening this week doesn`t mean nothing will happen next week. Business tends to intensify as the end of the window approaches and clubs are clearer about their plans. There`s a domino effect as players are signed but others have to be released to accommodate them.

Genuine question here - at what point does this start to become concerning?

Yet another game called off for a frozen park, an USH system thats unfit for purpose and a fixture backlog incoming.

Not blaming anyone, but its starting to look a bit like we have a dodgey park…..

It’ll be interesting to see how many other games are postponed.

We were only call off last weekend in SPFL, circumstances beyond control of course.

Stirling v Hamilton postponed with frozen pitch
Most of the highland league games
Albion v Linlithgow

The undersold heating was not fixed in time to test it, so we were completely at the mercy of the elements. Nothing more than a normal frozen pitch.

Although I did hear reports that there were several upturned chest freezers on the park last night...

But surely testing it would still render the game unplayable if it fails? Its going to need tested at some point, why not attempt it for this game and try get the game on?

I`m not sure what you`re failing to understand?

It wasn`t fixed in time to test it.

Let`s not overstate things here. Unless I`ve missed something, we have 2 games to reschedule. I know there might be more games postponed before the winter is over, but other clubs will be in the same boat.

Turning the heating on for it to fail to get the game on would have been a total waste of money. My guess is that it was discussed by folk who know more about the hearing system and the state of the pitch than we do and they came to the conclusion that it wasn`t worth the effort.

Alot of know it alls on this forum, seem to think you know better than the club and better than people who fix these systems, not to mention its the referee that calls the game off, not the club, so how about yous just gie it a rest eh

2 games to be rearranged, one which will be played on sat 10th Feb as that is a free week.
Therefore, only one midweek game to be arranged. Not exactly a backlog.

The flame still burns

It is what it is. Sensible decisions being made by the club, I’d expect. Couple of extra fixtures down the line is no biggie. And hopefully any more sub-zero temperatures will be dealt with by our now-fixed USH.

Under soil heating systems can fail for a number of reasons, faulty pump, boiler failure etc. Coupled with very low temperatures, the pipes could freeze with the water in them causing expansion and pipe failure. With freezing conditions and subsequent frozen ground, the opportunity to locate and fix a leak becomes more difficult. Also if the ground is frozen, with little or no wind, any saturated ground would remain like that until the weather turned. Once the weather turns the groundwater melts and saturates the soil. It will take time to evaporate and dry out. Given the weather conditions have just ruined today, clearly its not enough time for the pitch to dry out. I doubt it`s any more straightforward than that

Would have been the case regardless of today’s cup results. Queens Park game was supposed to be played first, so takes priority for rearranging

I could be wrong, par-91, but I think that the most recently postponed game usually takes precedence. Weird, I know, but I remember that being the case in the past. Don`t know if it still is, but I`m sure someone will be along soon to confirm or rubbish my post. 🙂

Maybe its just the bigger teams that have them, but maybe there`s a shout for the club investing in the light banks. No idea what the costs are to buy or run. Just a shout. Could help with the grass growing and potentially defrost areas.

I think there`s a guy in Cowdenbeath who had this set up. Kept things growing without any sunlight.

Possibly not the same type of grass that is on the pitch!
