 Greg Shields departs
Topic Originator: buffy
Date:   Mon 22 Jan 18:17

http://tinyurl.com/y553yvpe

“Greg has decided to stand down from his leadership role within the Dunfermline Athletic Youth Academy to pursue a career opportunity outside of football.

From joining the club as a 20 year old at the start of the 1997/98 season, Greg has represented the club with distinction as a player, turning out 235 times for the first team. After retirement from playing he then took up positions as reserve coach, first team coach and then on to the technical lead at our academy.

Chairman and CEO David Cook commented, “Greg Shields has been an asset across his many roles at the club and whilst we are supportive of his wish to pursue an employment opportunity outside of football, we are aware that he leaves big boots to fill.

I enjoyed watching Greg give his all for the club in his 200 appearances for the club including League Cup and Scottish Cup Finals. His pathway from DAFC to the English Premiership is an inspiration for everyone within our academy.

More latterly as Chairman, it has been a privilege to work with him behind the scenes to help build and grow the Pars Academy. Many players in the first team squad and in the senior youth age groups have benefitted from his coaching knowledge and expertise.

We are obviously disappointed to lose a person and a coach of his calibre but we wish him all the very best in his new career ventures.”

Greg Shields added, “This has been a very tough decision for me as Dunfermline Athletic have been a huge part of my life. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in all roles I have undertaken at the club.

The academy is in a very good place and I look forward to seeing the continued development of our next batch of future Pars players. I wish everyone all the best for this season and beyond.

Thanks to everyone within the club for their support over the years.”

Everyone at KDM Group East End Park wishes Greg all the very best.”

Dunfermline Athletic will now recruit to replace this position in the Academy.

That is a blow. I think we were just beginning to see the fruits of his labour. I wonder what job outside football could be more of a pull than seeing this job through. Must be a good one

That`s bad news for the club, but I wish Greg all the best for the future. A great servant to the club and inspiration for all younger players. He has been a real asset and I hope he is successful in his new adventure. I am sure the club would have known about this for a little while so may already be recruiting a replacement. Greg leaves behind a great legacy so yes big boots to fill

Greg is a huge loss. He`s an excellent coach and all the young lads absolutely loved and respected him. He had them playing good, possession based, passing football.

I don`t know how the Pars are going to find another coach of his calibre and dedication. All the best, Greg.

I wonder if Lee Bullen has any plans to go back into management. He is an excellent coach and has good experience at youth level.

I would imagine though, that this position is the key role in the long term plan. I think we will see now if the club owners are truly invested in this project or not, by the calibre of person that they appoint to this role now.

I would suggest that they can`t be appointing anyone that isn`t at least the standard of Greg Shields. In fact, in my opinion, it needs to be someone who is going to take the project further in leaps and bounds. If they mean business, it needs to be a serious person for the job.

Stevie Crawford would be the ideal man

Given the insecurity of football management and coaching as careers who can blame him for taking up an opportunity outside the game? Good luck to him.

How`s the Rosyth project coming along? Sounds like the floodlights for the astro are up so shouldn`t be too long before the astro is completed at least.
They must be fed up going all over the place for training in the academy teams. Glenrothes, south Queensferry etc.

In the 90s they had us training on the black ash car park at Pitreavie and in the winter on the concrete at Queen Anne-presumably they get looked after better these days🙂

Had a look at the job requirements. I`m a bit surprised that there`s not something in there about working to an agreed football style/philosophy/vision at all age levels so they are developing players for the first team. There is mention of lifestyle, drug use and the like but not football ethos.

Not criticising it, just seems a strange omission. Maybe that would be for the `head of academy `?

The youth teams should be playing the best style to have players develop into the first team.

Quite glad there’s no talk of philosophy, it’s one of the worst words in football, there’s absolutely no way we can predict how a 13 year old will respond to whatever our first team coach preferred style will be in a decade when it could easily change a dozen times in that spell. job of academy coaches is to teach players about different formations, styles etc. yeh the players will ultimately deviate towards one that suits them better but we can’t say we have much control over what that will be. Open-mindedness and doing whatever suits any particular player is crucial.

If you go into the actual job posting, it’s “Head of Professional / Academy Coaching U14-U18”… then it’s just called “Head of Professional” again in the actual job description.

In 2022, we announced Greg Shields was appointed as “Head of Academy - Football”. So I’m not sure when/why they changed this title.

It also looks really poor/amateurish that every article/social media post about this just refers to “Head of Professional” - including the article inviting new applicants. It’s clearly not a complete job title.

There’ll be many, perhaps Bullen included, who would welcome the relative peace and security over the rollercoaster of management. A job in football, away from the frontline of management, sounds quite appealing.
