I remember as a kid, my dad took me to a game at Easter Road, might have been towards the end of the 73/74 season.

The game ended 1-1 and I’m sure Alex Kinninmonth scored the equaliser with a cracking shot from well outside the box.

Indeed , LA. He met a corner on the volley, roundabout the penalty spot. The Sunday Post reported that had it not been for the net, the ball would have landed in the High Street.

RIP, Alex. How we could use your talents this season.....

A gifted player.

I mind one outstanding goal at EEP - he met a corner swung over from the NW flag on the volley v Rangers and smelted it past Peter McCloy - it was shown on BBC quite regularly.

I knew one of his playing colleagues from their Dundee days - and he was very complimentary about Alex`s skills.

If I recall correctly, was he not brought in as an older head to help guide a younger team? How we could do with someone like him now.

Hoping some of the older cohort of fans can help fill in the names I`m struggling with in the playing squad photo from the club tribute article.

https://dafc.co.uk/alex-kinninmonth/

Back row : Joe Hughes (?) - Jim Wallace - ? - John Arrol - Graham Shaw - ? - Dave McNicol - ? - Ian Campbell

Front row : Bonar Mercer - Kenny Thomson - Jim Bowie (?) - Alex Kinninmonth - Ken Mackie - ? - Jackie Sinclair

The goalie in red could be a lad named Barclay, only lasted one season ?
Signed on loan from Celtic ?

I really should recognise the face between Ken Mackie and Jackie Sinclair - but it escapes me. Jackie was in his second spell at the club, so I reckon the photo is 1973.

Sad news. Season 72/73 was when I started watching the Pars home and away virtually every week. AK was hugely influential on the likes of Ken Mackie, Graham Shaw and Dennis Nelson. Goals were much easier to come by in those years! Wonderful volley against Rangers and a great performance up at Dens (when I think Nelson scored 4). Nice guy on top of it all.

Denis Nelson, not Jim Bowie, who was 5 or so years later.

"Jim Scott is the one in the front row. Maybe Jim Gillespie in the back row?"

Yes, agreed, well spotted, thanks.

I mind the 5-1 at Dens mentioned above.......1974 ?

John Arrol got fed up with Jockie Scott persistently trying to block him kicking from hand, so in the second half he followed through and whacked Jockie where it really hurts the most. He went down for the full count.

The referee was struggling to keep a straight face - awarded an indirect free kick to the Pars for obstruction - needless to say Jockie didn`t bother Arrol again !!!

I think the player third from left in the back row was a lad called Bobby Cameron and isn`t the blond lad on the left of the front row Jimmy Brown?

Cameron is a fair shout - not sure about Brown, I reckon Mercer - but open to persuasion otherwise.

I don`t think that`s the same Jim Brown that Pelosi crippled - that was 1980s ?

Looks like the goalie in red is not Graham Barclay ?

He was my coach at the Wee Team and always went out of his way to help and encourage.
A great player and captain for the Pars, not so long after I started watching them

A hero of mine when I first started watching the Pars. I loved watching that team, which could be gloriously unpredictable, and Alex Kinninmonth was a real stand-out, leading the team. We looked bound for the new Top Ten in 74/75 until the wheels spectacularly came off the wagon after New Year. There`s a great tribute on the Dundee website too … I`d forgotten just how good Dundee were in Europe: https://dundeefc.co.uk/news/alex-kinninmonth/

Sad news ,I remember that goal against Rangers ,one of the best volleys I have ever seen at EEP.
Re the team photo,it`s 100% Jimmy Brown front row left. The blond player back row between Hughes and Wallace, for some reason the name Billy Mitchell jumped out at me but might need to go and look at some old childhood scrap books. The others were definitely Jim Gillespie and Jim Scott. A really good side -didn`t we score 97 league goals one of the seasons around then?

Parsweep, definitely Billy Mitchell we signed him from Celtic-I am looking at a page torn from an old Programme ,pen picture of Billy Mitchell, started his career with the wee team made his debut for them against us in september 69 then one season with Celtic where he broke his leg and then signed for us probably for season 72/3 and again 73/4. Billy Mitchell appears in the squad photo for Season 73-74 along with Alex Kinninmoth,Jimmy Brown,Mackie,Shaw,Nelson,Scott etc

The goalkeeper in this photo ( Scottish Football magazine -superb publication in its day) is named as "Thomson" but I dont recall him.As far as I remember Graham Barclay was a mid season emergency signing -I saw him play against Queens Park at Lesser Hampden so would be surprised if he was around for pre season squad photos.

I`ve been racking my brains about the keeper in red and it turns out he`s George Thomson, who went on to play first team for Albion Rovers. I think he may have actually played against us in a 5-0 pre-season defeat at Cliftonhil in August 1975. Unfortunately, I was at the game. :o(

His name`s in microscopic print in the team pic here:
https://daht.org.uk/story.php?t=Season+1973-1974&ID=9515

George died in November last year and seemed to have an interesting life away from football. There`s an obituary here:
https://arfc.proboards.com/thread/3110/george-thomson-obituary

I too thought it might have been Graham Barclay but, according to the Pars Database, he joined us in 1975 and played his first game on 9 August against Ayr Utd.

It`s definately not the late Barrie (correct spelling) Mitchell in that photo.

He left DAFC very much under a dark cloud at the end of 71-72 season knowing that he was already going to Aberdeen - he didn`t try a leg in the final league game v Dundee United which resulted in relegation.

A Pars legend (a genuine member of that elite group) decked him in the dressing room after the game due to his couldn`t care less attitude.......allegedly.

A bunch of fans waited around after the match to have a meaningful discussion with him - but he managed to bodyswerve.

Well done to those above who clocked the missing names.

I was at the Cowdenbeath end so I can`t say for definite but the received wisdom at the time was that he hit it from around the penalty spot.

It was one of these volleys that you catch so perfectly you hardly feel the weight of the ball. I managed it a total of once in a staff game and a colleague informed me it entered the net at "Warp 9." 😁

Was there that day, some whack on that ball. If you look at the goal on TV, it is the perfect execution. If Johan Crufft had hit that it would be still shown today.
Think it featured as the cover for the following season programme. The photo was the same all season.

It’s strange how sometimes just one word, in this case “Kinninmonth” can transport you back to a different time and place.

In my case it was the early 70s and already my Pars supporting career had been a roller-coaster ride – from 3rd in the league and European nights the despair of no wins by Christmas and relegation.

Living in the highlands and islands Information about games was scant, players were little more than names in the paper and match reports were brief and in the case of the Saturday games, couldn’t be read until the Sunday papers arrived on the Monday.

There was a changing of the guard – the old heroes like Callaghan, Lunn, Edwards, Fraser and Paton and so on had moved on, and were being replaced by the likes of Mackie and Shaw, Scott, Thomson, McNicoll, Wallace and Leishman.

And season 72/72 was happier – goals galore ( 95 in the league alone) – when it seemed a mix of youth and experience was proving successful.

Alex Kinninmonth was one of the new names to note; I gather he was an old head that could help the youngsters kick on. It wasn’t a name I had come across before or since, but just the mention still conjures up memories of scorelines like 8-0 and 7-2.

Sad news; my condolences go to his family.
