 Scotland TV deal
Topic Originator: cammypar 1995
Date:   Wed 9 Oct 15:19

Scotland qualifiers v Croatia and Portugalwill be shown on the viaplay YouTube channel. A sub licencing deal with itv and stv was close but no deal was confirmed.

This marks the first time this century a Scotland competitive match won`t be broadcast on linear TV.

c'mon the pars

Itv bought the rights for the England game off uefa. Scottish ones were purchased by viaplay who id assume rejected the bid from itv or stv.

Unlike ITV, STV simply don`t have the money to pay for such TV rights.

Why can`t ITV buy them and do a deal with STV?

Probably because viaplay has the rights and would prefer to keep them than give them to itv.

"Why can`t ITV buy them and do a deal with STV?"

The two have had a difficult relationship in the not too distant past.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-13206671

It`s more of a wider commercial television industry issue than simply one of sports coverage as far as I can tell.

And to my knowledge viaplay still owns the rights to our games.

"And to my knowledge viaplay still owns the rights to our games."

Understood - the question is when did they acquire the rights and why didn`t/couldn`t STV do so at that point ?

Lack of that kind of money I suspect/

They got the rights last year, then changed their stance on the UK this summer. The first round of games were bought by STV/ITV, whereas they havent reached an agreement this window. Games shown live on Viaplays Youtube channel free of charge instead.

It’s a complete joke. Thing is, I’ll be watching it on YouTube. To me I don’t understand why STV or especially the BBC aren’t taking the rights to it. Surely they would have known that Viaplay would have put it on YT and they’re currently in panic mode about dwindling viewers. They’ve literally just gave more people no choice but to watch YT

ITV 4 got good viewing figures for both Scotland games so I imagine Viaplay were asking for more money. They`ve kind of cut their nose off to spite their face somewhat as they won`t get as much from YouTube adverts than they would have from selling the rights to ITV or the BBC but that`s up to them. UEFA need to look at having some kind of rule about games being shown in the territory of the national team though, but I can`t see that happening with UEFA more interested in money than anything much else.

If STV can`t afford to secure the rights - who would you hold responsible ?

Slightly off-topic but apparently Celtic refused to switch next week`s League game against Aberdeen from the traditional Saturday 3 pm ko to live TV transmission later but the fee offered of £75k is probably not significant to them.

YouTube on a TV will have adverts, casting it from a computer will allow you to ways to block YouTube ads. I can`t go on that site without blockers active

To answer that fully you`d need some idea of budgets but it feels like if ITV are given the budget to secure England games, STV should be given a budget to secure Scotland games.

Problem with that is STV is largely independent of ITV. Just feels unfair.

ITV and STV are separate business entities, the latter does not have the financial stature to buy these games.

For those questioning why ITV can afford to pay for football matches but STV cannot, you might be interested in the respective sizes of the two companies (from Wiki):

ITV plc

Revenue
£3,624 million (2023)

Operating income
£238 million (2023)

Net income
£209 million (2023)

STV GROUP plc

Revenue
£168.4 million (2023)

Operating income
£12.4 million (2023)

Net income
£5.3 million (2023)

Better that the game is free on YouTube for fans than being behind a paywall on Viaplay. A lot more people can get YouTube than could receive Viaplay.
