It’s been a long time coming this one, how he got the time there that he did, is beyond me.

I don’t really follow “Champions League” football, but what obvious manager is out there to take over from him? They’ve had some really baffling appointments since Sir Alex retired.

Correct, BB. David Moyes was Fergie`s recommendation of course and he might have succeeded if he had kept Fergie`s backroom staff instead of clearing them out and bringing in his own team. Successive appointments were equally poor if not worse. United really missed the boat by failing to hire either Pep or Klopp and that`s not being wise after the event - I said so at the time. Van Gaal and Mourinho were not good fits at OT and I don`t know how the decision makers could possibly have thought differently.

Ten Hag has struggled from day 1. He doesn`t appear to be great at building a good relationship with the players in his squad.

Sad to anyone lose their job .. They gave him time to turn things around .. I watched the West Ham game and Man U could have been 5 up at half time .. then the 3 subs for West Ham were fantastic and really bothered Man U .. The penalty decision was an absolute joke .. Feel sorry for Ten Hag

There seems to be this myth that Mourinho was terrible at United - in 2 seasons he won a League Cup, Europa League, finished 2nd to City (which may be given to them eventually) and had a 58% win ratio for them 😂 hardly awful.

Also United a club not afraid of finally punting a manager - unlike some clubs…..

I didn`t say he was terrible, Dave, just not a good fit. There was no chance United fans would take to the style of football he favoured. Compare that to Fergie`s brand or those brought up on Best, Law and Charlton or even Tommy Doherty`s young team....

I think Ferguson tried to pitch the Man Utd job to Pep when he had his year out (before Bayern I think?) but he wanted total control and his own people in place before even thinking about it. City got the likes of Tixi Begerhastan (sp?) in as a sporting director etc in and gave him carte blanche. I think Pep would have taken the United job too but here we are.

They make loads of money, even more than Arsenal and Liverpool but they just spend it on absolute dross. Not sure if Fletcher will help in that regard, the ex Southampton guy doesn`t seem to be doing much and they really need a proper director of football or a manager who`ll do it all so they don`t waste stupid money on average signings.

I see Xavi is favoured at the bookies which would be an odd appointment as he`s been shown up by Flick at Barca and I`m not sure how good his English. Zidane had only ever been at Real Madrid and at times they seem to need man managers rather than head coaches. Southgate would be a dud for various reasons. I can`t see it as it`s not a sexy appointment but I reckon they should be looking at Thomas Frank at Brentford. Excellent coach, gets the best out of players and knows the league and the language.

Mourinho took an average Manchester United team to 2nd in the league. I’m pretty certain Man U fans would bite your hand off for a manager who could get them back to that sort of level.

I`d argue that a good knowledge of English is absolutely essential, wee eck. Very few managers have been successful when having to speak through an interpreter. Remember Unai Emery at Arsenal. How much better is he faring at Villa now that he has a reasonable grasp of the language?

I suppose it depends how quickly he can pick up the lingo. I remember when Pochettino arrived at Southampton he used an interpreter for his post-match interviews but he was much more confident to conduct them in English by the time he moved to Spurs.

Klopp left Liverpool in a good place and deliberately so for a smooth transition.
Fergie left Man Utd with an ageing squad and nothing for the next manager to work with.
Not saying that’s his fault but United have never recovered from the Fergie years much like Aberdeen in Scotland for over three decades (until now hopefully )

Ruben Ameron has been announced tonight as accepting the United managers job by The Manchester Evening News and David Ornstein of the Athletic. According to both the only thing outstanding is the value of the compensation to Sporting Lisbon.

Honestly, the whole Fergie left them in a bad way 9 years and 6 managers later just doesn’t hold up for me anymore but can I just ask, are you seriously saying Aberdeen have struggled to recover since November 1986?? 🤷🏻‍♂️ like at what point do you think the onus is on the club and not on the ex manager?

Thats a little harsh buspasspar - his wifes sister had died around Oct/Nov of that season if I remember rightly and he decided that he needed to be with her and focus on her after she had supported his career for so many years.

Dont forget he left them as champions of england with Rooney and Van Persie leading the attack.

There`s always an exception that proves the rule, shelly. 🙂 And anyway, I did say that only a very few managers who don`t speak the native language are successful. Perhaps Claudio Ranieri is the outstanding example. When he arrived at Chelsea, he spoke no English at all. By the time he returned to the Premier League with Leicester, he spoke a little pidgin English and we all know what happened next.....

Do you not think Man City are well on their way to a similar achievement, da?

Money talks so they say. If any club is liable to overtake City in a few years time, it is more likely to be Newcastle than Man U, for that simple reason, Once they get a top class manager (no direspect to Eddie Howe intended) and DoF etc, like City have done, I think they`ll be able to attract the best players by offering outrageous salaries.

Citys achievements are currently overshadowed in wild litigation matters that tarnish their growth since 2008….people will say “but its not the players that cheated” whilst forgetting that the only reason they could achieve getting these managers/players is through fraud. Thats if they are found guilty of course…..

City without their owners would slide back to mediocrity. United have the largest fan base in the world and I think are only overshadowed by Real and Barca in revenue.

No structure or actual game plan has been the downfall of United

Sir Alex won 13 titles in 26 years and Pep has won 6 in 8 I think? Man City have won 10 league titles in their history compared to 20 for Man Utd.It won`t take long for the gap to close on current form.

It`s certainly difficult to see the team that`s won 8 of the last 13 Premier League titles dominating English football.

Awfy sorry for having an opinion that goes against the grain.

GG I just can`t see them dominating English football in the same way United and Liverpool did in the past, especially when Pep moves on. Just my opinion.

No problem having a different opinion, but does it stand up to close scrutiny? Man City have been pretty dominant domestically since Pep arrived. Of course, it`s not solely down to him - he has sports directors and directors of football, or whatever they`re called, to help him bring in the best players money can buy, and money is no object, of course.

Liverpool were no great shakes until Shankly arrived. He was obsessive and transformed the club from top to bottom. When he retired, he was replaced by a succession of good managers; Bob Paisley, Joe Faagan, Kenny Dalglish. Herself and the European ban hit them hard and the managers following Dalglish didn`t enjoy the same success. This was due at least in part, to the appointment of Alex Ferguson at OT. Importantly, neither club was short of funds during their years of dominance.

In conclusion, we can say that if a club is minted and hires a top manager, it has an excellent chance of dominating its domestic competitions. Think Bayern, PSG, Celtic..... Newcastle will be in the frame before long - they have the money, all they have to do is hire the very best manager they can get, along with a head of recruitment to bring in the players that manager wants and they`ll lift off. Like it or not, the PL is awash with cash.
