I don`t think I`ll ever see another game like PSG v Liverpool if I live to be 100. The PL Champions elect were absolutely battered for 90 mins but won thanks to their only shot on target on 87 mins.
Allison did a fair impression of Eddie Connachan in the Pars 1961 SC win v Celtic to keep out PSG who had 27 shots on goal - almost 1 every 3 mins. PSG did score a brilliant goal through their wee Georgian winger - I`ll just call him KK - but it was ruled out by VAR because his heel was offside as he ran back to be onside. (The offside law is an ass.)
VAR was again involved in perhaps the most significant decision of the game when Konate escaped a red card after a clear last man foul on Bradley Barcolà on the edge of the penalty area in the first halt. Why was the ref not instructed to review his decision on the pitchside monitor? It`s doubtful whether Allison`s heroics would have been enough to keep PSG out if his team had gone down to 10 men for an hour or so.
The French side still have a chance to turn the tie around at Anfield next week, but it will be really tough for them to get up for it after expending so much energy and then succumbing to that late punch in the stomach. I might just go and stick a wee wad on Liverpool to win the CL. 🙂

I`ve never rated psg goalkeeper Allison is streets ahead of him. Brilliant game to watch glad (although I thought it was a red card) it stated at 11v11.

How VAR never asked the ref to send off Konate is shocking. Blatant red card all day long.
Denied a goal scoring opportunity and just pushed the boy. Shambles.

Good post GG .. Cant argue with any of that .. It was a wonderful game to watch .. Diaz had a mare .. Sala was very poor by his standards .. PSG did not allow them to play could have been 5 or 6 .. Alisson was superb and its only half time .. canny wait for the second half

Oh, come on, Bandy. Even TOWK wouldn`t come out with such a bitter post. 😀
Liverpool had bags of luck last night, but they`re runaway PL leaders on merit, not down to luck.

There was some pretty dreadful finishing on show by PSG too. Barrs Cola bottled at least one.
PSG look a much better unit this season though. They will still be dangerous at Anfield.

You can`t deny they`ve been lucky GG.
Do they deserve to be top - yes, absolutely. Do they deserve to be so far ahead with the title pretty much wrapped up. Absolutely not.
Liverpool`s key players (bar Alisson) have been fit all season. Their only two serious rivals have been decimated by injuries (and highly dubious refereeing decisions). Little things have gone in their favour too - vs Man City Haaland was out, vs Newcastle Isak was out...
It`s a squad game - absolutely - but you can`t argue that in this season that pretty much every little thing that could have gone in Liverpool`s favour, has gone in their favour.

Part of the decision to recruit Slot was based on the 90%+ player availability that he had at Feyenoord.
Not to say that you can`t be unlucky with these things, but he had a history of controlling the workload.

Luck is defined as "success or failure apparently brought by chance".
When a referee can look at a replay of a blatant red card offence and wave it away you have to wonder how such a fortuitous outcome can be arrived at by chance. Had Rangers or Celtic (though on this forum mostly Rangers) benefited from such a perplexing and baffling officiating decision many would be questioning motives.

Interesting that DA-Go, I never knew that.
I`d argue that player availability needs to be measured over the longer term, so the fact Slot has good player availability this season is more likely to be correlation that causation, but if he maintains it for the next few seasons I`ll eat my words!

Arsenal had a slice of luck in their game also - although probably didnt affect the outcome - the young right back Lewis-Skelly should have been sent off for a 2nd yellow card almost immediately after his first.... commentators said - sensible refereeing as hes just a young lad...wtf

Hmm... 🤔 You can`t be referring to last night`s game. The ref wasn`t asked to look at Konate`s stonewall red card on the pitchside monitor. It`s VAR I`d question not the ref. I wouldn`t rule out foul play, but I wouldn`t rule it in either. Baffling decision. The BBC highlights programme didn`t even mention it. At least the TNT team, led by Rio,😄 called it.
Your definition of luck is pretty much spot on.

Liverpool used up a season`s worth of luck last night(and Alisson was brilliant), but you can`t extend that to the whole domestic season. It`s bad luck to have lots of injuries but not sure you can say a team that has few injuries is lucky. It also depends if the injuries are to key players.
It`ll be interesting to see how the return leg pans out but I think PSG are psychologically done.

He was at Feyenoord for three and a half seasons, so I guess they looked at the injury history over the entire tenure. I`m relaying what I heard from a podcast, however, so I`m prepared to backtrack if anyone on here has better info on Feyenoord`s injury record between December 2020 and June 2024.
