For an appointment that began with such a prolonged courtship, the end came abruptly for Michael Tidser at Dunfermline. It took just 59 days from his arrival in mid-January for the Pars hierarchy to decide he was not the man to take the club forward. The final straw was Friday’s Fife derby defeat at Raith Rovers, leaving the Pars ninth in the Championship and deep in a relegation battle. It was not just the 2-0 loss, but the dismal performance that allowed rivals to mock and poke fun and claim those fabled ‘bragging rights’ Courier Sport has taken a look back at Tidser’s two-month reign and analysed where it all went wrong.
When predecessor James McPake was sacked just two days before Christmas, it quickly became apparent Tidser was the number one target. Inexperienced, but showing promising signs in League One, the 35-year-old was deemed a better option than the likes of the out-of-work Ian Murray. However, with negotiations with Kelty Hearts over compensation complicated by Tidser’s playing contract, not to mention their asking price, it was almost four weeks before Dunfermline could announce their new man.
In a whirlwind few days for the East End Park club, the completion of a successful takeover by Park Bench duo James Bord and Evan Sofer was confirmed just 24 hours later. Despite that timeline, the United States-based investors were fully involved in the decision to go with Tidser. Here was a young, developing head coach who would fit – and accept – the data-driven approach of the majority shareholders. Talks between Tidser and Bord had taken place well before either matter came to a conclusion.
The Pars announced the new manager’s arrival as ‘The Next Chapter’ but, as it has turned out, it will barely merit a couple of pages in the club’s history. Handed a two-and-a-half-year deal, he lasted only two months.
It is customary for those at the sharp end of such managerial decisions to explain publicly why one has left and what made the replacement the best candidate. However, it was only on March 5 – nearly seven weeks later – that chairman and chief executive David Cook put any meat on the bones of Tidser’s appointment with a video interview on the official club website. “Michael was one that shone through in quite a bit of the data analysis that they [the new owners] created on the managerial opportunity,” Cook said.
It was that very same data analysis that subsequently informed the signings made in the January and February windows. It was the kind of backing that McPake could only have dreamed of last summer under previous owners DAFC Fussball GmbH, when targets were denied and games were played with only one signed goalkeeper. Nine players in total were added to Tidser’s squad. But it has been suggested to Courier Sport only one of those – on-loan Rangers kid Archie Stevens – was identified by the now former boss.

I actually feel a bit bad for Tidser. He`s been utterly shafted here. Gets brought in to do a certain job then is given the wrong tools to do so. He was the wrong guy at the wrong time for us but he has been screwed big time from the start.

Hopefully now finally puts paid to all the experts saying that the new owner had no clue about Tidser etc.
Shambles of an appointment from the start and the window being used to sign inexperienced youngsters that haven’t played games before highlights a potential bigger concern moving forward.
When is JC going to be held to account?

One thing to bear in mind is that our new owners are gamblers.
They make their money by placing a LOT of bets and within that there`s an acceptance that some bets (a lot of them) won`t work out. It`s not a perfect science, which we can see from the recruitment in Jan but the hope is you can make your returns with the `hits` outweighing the `misses`. It`s fair to say that the Jan signings have been more misses than hits, but in fairness their models probably aren`t well calibrated for the lower field of the Scottish Championship on tattie field pitches.
As such, I can forgive the fact that the recruitment hasn`t quite worked this time - but it would be unforgiveable if they didn`t learn from January`s signings to improve the hit rate in windows to come.
I think Tidser is a bit of a victim in this and has been scapegoated to an extent, and I think we need a new head coach who`s used to working in a system where player recruitment is driven by others.

It looks like the new manager will have to deal with that yes however Tidser isn’t blameless, the tactics and style of play were all on him and his refusal to adapt and change is why we are where we are.

I have little sympathy for Tidser because he was above all a victim of his own arrogance. He rigidly stuck to playing football his way with a pool of players it was obvious to everyone weren’t going to be able to win that way. He refused to entertain the notion of a plan B. Ultimately, throwing his philosophy out the window to adopt a more pragmatic approach could well have saved him, he was too stubborn to do it.
Could the January recruitment have been better though, undoubtedly, but he never made the best of what he had.

This data analysis malarkey gives me the fear.
Potential managers could well be put off by it. And look at the players it targeted, worse than useless most of them.
These owners won`t be going back to basics anytime soon.

I disagree with that - and the others saying the same thing.
I don`t think the Rovers match looked anything like the matches at the start of Tidser`s very brief time in charge.
I do not think he was strong enough to stick to his plan A. The problem was that none of the players knew or understood what they were meant to be attempting once it was amended. The then looked bereft of confidence or belief.
Don`t get me wrong, the possession style he started with wasn`t working and was unlikely to start working with these players, halfway through the season. The issue was that he needed an alternative and didn`t really have one and/or couldn`t convey it to the players.

There has been one very good signing, at least I hope we have him signed the young lad at centre back can`t remember his name just now with so many double barrelled names but I think he could make a lot of money for us if he keeps on improving. So one potential diamond in the bag of 7 .

That`ll be Chilokoa Mullen. I`ve heard we`ve signed him on a 6 month deal until the end of the season. However we do have the option to extend it if he performs well.

I keep reading about his style of Football but when the players got on the pitch there was no style it was a few square balls, nothing on and then a lump up the pitch.
It might have been acceptable if you could see what he was trying to achieve but the players looked clueless. That for me is a bigger failure than the results.
It doesn`t need to get personal it just seems this was a step too far early in his career.

He is signed until the end of the season with a option to extend (may have a relegation clause in it) If that is triggered, Leeds have a large future sell on clause on him too.
