 David Martindale on Lewis McCann
Topic Originator: Raymie the Legend
Date:   Thu 3 Apr 10:04

I was listening to his post match interview and he said that Lewis was one of the best strikers in the league when played through the middle, like last night. He said he was aware that we had been playing him wide left, but through the middle is wheee he is best and where he would play him.

Interesting.

Listened to it earlier and really enjoyed hearing his take on the game which I thought was fair.

McCann played well but not convinced he’s as good as referenced. Hopefully he gets the run out in this position remainder of the season and see if he can prove doubters like me wrong!

McCann has all the physical attributes to be a top striker but he’s just lacking in something. He’s a young boy so there is still time for him to find his way. I hope he proves us all wrong too.

He’s played upfront quite a few times over the seasons and it hasn’t yielded goals or particular good performances, yogi did the same for half a season in particular.

Martindale does like a big physical target man or 2 though! If McCann leaves it sounds like we know where he’d end up!

I listened to that interview too and was struck by his comments about McCann. They are borne out too by the fact that all the Pars` managers he has played under have made him a `first pick`. It doesn`t change the fact that he is incredibly frustrating to watch as a Pars` fan. I lost count of the number of times a move broke down because of a poor final pass from him.

I thought Martindale`s analysis of the game was very fair. There was some irony in a Livi manager complaining about the state of our pitch though! Didn`t he also complain about the number of fouls his players gave away?!!!

Agree on that wee eck, god awful decision making and an inability to improve that after 150 games means it doesn’t tend to matter what else he does as he inevitably gives it away. Leaves others out of position too.

To be fair he’s been in and out of the team for a good few seasons now, last season due to injuries most were guaranteed a game and this season due to a poor squad with no height or width.

If we stay up and there’s a decent budget to rebuild, I can’t see a place for him in the starting line up. Hasn’t got that mange (edit menace!) in the air that you would bring him on if you needed a goal towards the end of a game either.

How would his players know the pitch was bad all they did from start to finish was lump the ball up in the air to the big lads up front and any time the ball was on the ground they broke up any play with fouls. That’s the reason they are trailing the knuckle draggers no plan B.

To coin that age-old cliche - `it was the same for both sides`. Presumably he thinks they would have outplayed us on a decent pitch. I don`t think NL was happy with it either but maybe we adapted better.

I think Lewis does his best work down the right wing, although he seems to have a roving roll. He switches wing at times and interchanges with Kane. He is a right sided player, so I think playing on the right suits him better. He has a presence on the park because of his physical stature.

McCann done alright last night as did Kane. Strikers don`t have to necessarily score goals for them to play well.

Don`t worry about it Brian, it`s the usual suspects every time.
No matter if we win, lose or draw McCann is our worst player or Chalmers or whoever else they have a grudge against.
Every manager we have had have rated Lewis and at 23 his best is ahead of him. Can`t imagine how much it would cost us to replace him with his aerial ability, speed and assists.

Absolutely, he is a centre forward. Like most of them works better in a 2, and beside a guy with all of Kane`s qualities, is a good combination. His decision making/final pass can let him down, but even then he is a still a handful with his pace and size.

I would still argue that he has not for a long time had any decent run of games as a centre forward - certainly not during McPakes time. Play him up front in a front 2 regularly in a decent Championship side and he gets you double figure goals and a few assists. Potentially he can offer more than that.

Totally agree Bucuresti. He’s never a left winger but has found himself playing there more often than not. Hopefully Lenny keeps him paired up top with Kane, otherwise my fear is that someone like Martindale knows how to play him, signs him and gets the best out of him, and we miss out.

We’re really talking about missing out on the best from a guy who have been in the first team 6 years and has played over 150 games?

I’ve heard next season he’ll come good for at least 3 seasons now. I prefer to go on the evidence we see on the pitch week in week out. Do we think with our likely playing budget next season we won’t be able to get a better player to partner Kane? I’d go with young to partner Kane next year for a start, he looks a much better prospect.

Last night was a great performance and even better result but McCann, amongst many others at the club, should be moved on at the next available opportunity. He is part of a crop of players who have been mediocre at best for too long.

The Kane/McCann combination in the Partick Thistle game was electric. If we got that every week we`d be skating this league. That was my best memory of the season so far. It was brilliant to walk home among the Thistle fans, who had just witnessed their only home defeat of the season.

Totally agree with Bucuresti Par, Paralex and dd23. Lewis has suffered from the recent management teams’ insistence on playing a single striker, a role he is not best suited to, so he has had to revert to the winger’s role, where was forced to play when he was just breaking into the team. The partnership between him and Kane worked really well last night on the whole, and a longer ball game getting the ball up quickly to the front two works really well when both are physically strong, relatively mobile (ie quick over the crucial first five yards) and can win a fair percentage of headers against the man mountain centre halves every other team in this league seems to have. Kane and McCann seemed to take it in turns to play a really speedy press and to make runs into the channels in the space behind the fullbacks who had edged forward to close down Comrie and Chalmers. Confidence is crucial for a striker as we all know, and Lewis certainly looked like he knew what his role was last night. The goals will follow.

I think depending on squad size McCann could be given an opportunity to prove his worth under a manager who could get the best out of him. The teams he has played in have not been the most attacking or prolific, even when we won the League One title.

If he was one of 3/4 proper options to play up top next season he could either prove he is worthy of playing in that team or end up on the bench.

He is still only 23 and has potential. Let’s hope Lennon helps him fulfil that.

McCann through the middle is fine when we play with wide men who can actually cross a ball.
KRH is probably the only one we have who delivers quality crosses but he’s been frozen out as he’s not allowed to play his natural game , ie. take on the full back and first time ball circa Stuart Petrie.
Very effective and gets the fans on their feet.
As it is Kane is the most effective man in the middle but he’s does seem to have developed an understanding with McCann.

Saw pics of him up on the walls at Somerset park last week and was reminded how good he was. He got a bit of stick for not scoring the kind of numbers of goals he had at Ayr but he was such a good footballer. A great supporting player for someone who could find the net.

Totally agree. And that`s why I think McCann has the attributes to score goals if played in a forward role in a team that creates chances.

Oh I completely agree Cammy - their end product is quite possibly up there with the worst for Pars strikers Ive seen. They get themselves into good areas with their work rate and fight but then make an absolute dugs @rse of it every time. Just not good enough at all.

Aye where are those saying all he needs is Lenny putting an arm round him and he’ll be great?

We’re down the bottom of championship or in league 1 in his time here because we keep playing players like him. 150 apps while we bounce between league 1 and bottom of the championship.

Never in my time supporting the pars has one player been so consistently poor and devoid of talent and lasted a whole 6 seasons. This club can do better.

I laughed when Martindale said what he did. Agree a transfer fee and I’ll drive the lad to Livi myself.

Folk have got to realise he’s not a young kid anymore, been around the first team for years now and not fulfilled his potential.

It’s a shame we don’t have many options on the area he plays. As some say, he’s been a stick on starter with the last 3 or maybe 4 gaffers. Must be some trainer.

Lewis needs a goal and I`d love it next week. Hampden free kick style. His first touch was horrible today.

Agreed.

McCann seems to have some kind of free kick specialist optimism about him.

Yes he scored a screamer at Hampden but every other free kick he’s ever hit has been shi7e.

Yeboah and McCann were worse than useless today.

They are 1st division level

They`d struggle to get in most teams at that level.

Whose opinion to believe, several professional football managers who all rate Lewis McCann, or some no mark on a rarely visited football forum?

I hope that`s sarcasm ffs

Yes but these managers were Grant, Hughes, McPake & Tidser and we know how good they were.

Agree, those managers didn’t prioritise attacking football or attacking signings and because of the inconsistent level of young loans coming in he has played so many games.

What’s he actually good at? what aspects of his game suggest he can succeed at this level?

He has a good immediate instinct, any time he has to react to something, like the goal against Partick. But when he has more than a second to think about it, he just breaks down

Agree with that. He also puts himself about and at least tries to win everything in the air. Unfortunately, he’s just not at the level we need him to be.

The thing is though, everyone knows this by now, what isn’t needed is certain posters consistently bringing it up every week and expecting significant change. Just accept he’s here for the foreseeable and try to back him as we need him to keep us up - along with others. Nothing good comes of repetitive bashing of them.

Has all the attributes to be a good player but for some reason it seldom clicks and 95% of the time he’s a waste of a pair of shorts.

Other than stature, what attributes would you list? I can’t help but think if he was 5’10” he wouldn’t have had the opportunities he has had.

Managers always think that they’ll be the one who is able to get a tune out of a player. Hopefully, Lennon can. If not, I’d quite like to see Martindale try. Probably would be a good move for the player too. Seems like he needs a fresh start.

Mcann is just a baffling player…he looks decent in some games then looks like he doesn’t care(I think when the going gets tough he can’t be ersed). Hes not got any positional awareness when defending but imo that is just a sign of a lazy player who can’t be ersed to defend and leaves it to another team member.
Hes young and can learn but a very frustrating player most of the time.

He’s got plenty sympathisers on here that’s for sure. We can’t be accused of not giving homegrown players a chance that’s for sure, he’s had more chances than anyone in recent history and failed to take any of them.

He’s young…….he’s 24 in 2 months with 150 games he’s been involved in
He’s played out of position…..he’s been played up front plenty times to no avail.
He needs a better striker partner…..so needs someone to carry him?
He needs better coaching…….been coached by loads of coaches each hasn’t improved him.
He needs the right manager….he’s had 5-6 managers now who he hasn’t repaid with performances.

He’s got no decent attributes except the one he was born with. No good in the air, no good on the deck, no anticipation, no game intelligence, no positional sense, poor balance so easily eased off the ball. There’s nothing there to suggest he’s good enough and folk still think the next manager will be the one to get something out of him.

We let the likes of Ohara, todorov, Andy Ryan and Jakubiak leave as they were deemed not good enough, at least they produced at clubs before joining the pars, when has McCann ever produced? How is he any better than any of them?

I think Lewis McCann is a big strong fast player with the first touch of an elephant. It also gets frustrating to see him mistime jumps, misplace passes, cross it for goal kicks, run wide and leave the box empty etc etc etc

I think he’s physically capable but I don’t think he’s quite got it. There’s every chance he moves somewhere else and it clicks but just keeping him ticking over here while we bounce around the championship/league 1 is good for nobody

I think it’s in everyone’s interest if McCann moves on in the summer.

He hasn’t progressed to where he should be and a change of scenery is needed.

Yeah he needs to move on, if only to see who gets it in the neck on every single thread next season.

It`s already looking like Matty Todd.

Todd has blown just as hot and cold this season to be fair 😂 still cant decide if he is good enough for a promotion push or not (if we stay up of course)
