 Loanees

With the season ending our loanees are returning to their parent clubs having done their bit for the Pars, and hopefully gained some useful experiences. Even if their playing time was limited, the experience of a different league, the pressure of a relegation battle, and seeing the changes that come with a managerial sacking will have given them a different perspective on the professional game.

It can be interesting to follow the fortunes of our former loanees after they have left the club, and many of those with us temporarily last season have had a reasonable 24/25, with Malachi Fagan-Walcott unsurprisingly the standout, with his six goals and four assists in 39 appearances helping York to 2nd in the Conference and into the play-offs. In the same league, Miles Welch-Hayes (on loan again from Livi) clocked up 31 appearances for Maidenhead United , who were unfortunately relegated this week despite amassing 52 points over the season. They now fall into the National League South where they will meet Enfield Town, who were bottom of their league for most of the season but recently completed The Great Escape, part in thanks to Xavier Benjamin, who played 33 games after signing for them at the end of September, his contract with Cardiff Cityhaving expired in the summer. At the same level on the English pyramid, Brad Holmes signed for Marine FC of the National League North last summer but sadly his lack of form/confidence continued, scoring only twice in 19 appearances, before finally discovering his scoring touch one level lower on loan to Hyde United in the Northern Premier League, netting a reasonable seven times in 21 appearances. Incidentally, that is the level at which another former loanee Efe Ambrose turns out, for ex-Football League side Workington AFC. Of our other loanees last season Ben Summers had two goals and two assists on loan from Celtic at Admira Wacker in the Austrian second division, whilst in our last league game of the season we had an early reminder of Owen Moffat’s talent, his fourth goal in 34 Morton appearances this term.

Of the previous year’s (League One winning) loanees, in addition to Otto and KRH, Chris Mochrie (seven goals in a struggling Airdrie team including scoring against us) showed the ability to compete well at Championship level, whilst the now 37 year old Paul McGowan played 35 times for Annan back down in League One, netting just the once, and now faces the relegation play-off. Robbie Mahon signed in January for Loughgall FC in the Northern Ireland Premiership (the same league that Declan McManus joined and where another ex-Par Andy Ryan is a major star), but was unfortunately unable to save them from finishing last.

Going back another year to the relegation year, keeper loanee Jakob Stolarcyk made six English Premier League appearances this season for relegated Leicester, Bobby Kamwa scored two hat-tricks for Newport County in League Two (and nine goals and five assists in total in 40 matches),

[apologies - bottom section below got automatically cut off of the overlong OP]

whilst Ross Graham (four goals in 15 games for Dundee United) and Coll Donaldson (promoted) also enhanced their CVs. Kai Kennedy, however, continues to flatter to deceive, scoring just twice in twenty-two appearances for Queen of the South, who did make the play-offs.

Good luck to all our 24/25 loanees for their future careers. Which of them is the most likely to make it based on their brief Pars careers?

Great post this! No surprise with Walcott who surely will move up if York don’t. Trying to remember kamwa, can’t think he got many appearances and pretty much no starts.

Will be interesting to see how many of this years loans and in particular the Jan arrivals have any impact wherever they are next year!

See Josh coley was a regular for Sutton this season. Kai Kennedy set to play in the promotion playoffs for Queen of the south.

The post below replying to me is by one of .nets finest champions of mediocrity!

Saw Fagan-Walcott scoring for York at the Hive. Fortunately Barnet scored 3 to York`s one and gave them a right pumping. `Mon the Bees.

Fagan-Walcott didn`t have a great game actually - Barnet played two up top. Lee Ndlovu (owner of the largest thighs in football IMO) held the ball up so well and Callum Stead (non-stop running) didn`t give him a moments peace and he made quite a few errors. His goal was a last minute consolation.

That said, I`d take him back at EEP in a heartbeat. Miles better than our other defensive options.

I really enjoyed that round-up. I thought my football knowledge was fairly good and had no idea McManus left TNS. I assumed he was injured as I always checked their scores and scorers.

I’d forgotten about Josh Coley, Berkey, good shout. Quite a lot of those on loan going further back are playing at a decent level, Daniel Armstrong/Bruce Anderson/Fraser Murray/Lewis Mayo/Liam Polworth (all at Killie), Greg Kiltie (St Mirren), Ethan Ross (Falkirk), Scott Banks (St Pauli), Ewan Henderson (relegated with Beerschot), and Jonathan Afolabi (promotion play-offs with Cambuur Leeuwarden) for example. But Harry Cochrane (Queen of the South), Anthony Macdonald (Brechin) and Ryan Blair (Dumbarton) probably had higher aspirations earlier in their careers.

Our policy then seemed to be very much to get quality SPL loanees, but in the last couple of seasons, since the advent of B teams in the Lowland League and some other clubs running down their academies, we have had more from clubs in the English Championship (one of the top ten richest leagues in Europe where clubs operate with large squads).

I quite liked Bobby Kamwa and felt that he could do a decent job if given a chance, which he never got too much of with us.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Agree - he never really got a proper chance to show what he could do

I know he was here permanently so slightly off topic but what happened to Gabby McGill? Thought he had a decent enough record at Airdrie but seems to have been without a club for a year.

Admira Wacker sounds like a great name for a Star Wars character.
