Squad update on COWS
Topic Originator: wee eck
Date:   Wed 7 May 14:03

Leaving the club at the end of their contracts are Aaron Comrie, Joe Chalmers, Craig Wighton, Rhys Breen, David Wotherspoon, Craig Clay, Michael O’Halloran and Omar Taylor-Clarke.

Dialogue remains ongoing with Chris Hamilton, Josh Cooper, Tashan Oakley-Boothe, Jeremiah Chilokoa Mullen and Victor Wanyama.

Young players Jake Sutherland Liam Hoggan and Ewan McLeod have all been offered new terms. Goalkeeper Lewis Briggs will be leaving the club at the end of his contract and we thank him for his efforts while at the club.

Lewis McCann has also undergone surgery following his recent injury, and the club will provide facilities for his rehabilitation and will remain in dialogue with Lewis. Further updates will be issued in due course.

All seems fair enough, personally would probably have kept Comrie, but there will be a replacement.

Glad we`re talking to Cooper, that would be an opportunity missed, the others (in particular ones who played for us in League 1) we had some good times but we need a clearout.

The ones leaving are all honest pros, good luck to them, most I guess will go to league one.

As for Lewis McCann, the club are doing the right thing offering (I assume paying) for rehab, the rest will be up to the new manager. Again if he leaves/gets extended there`s plenty good moments.

Based on the information released yesterday I reckon the current state of the first team squad is as follows -

Under contract (13)

Mehmet, Bene, S Young, Otoo, Fisher, Ngwenya, Ritchie-Hosler, Todd, A Tod, T Sutherland, Kane, C Young, K Bray

`In dialogue` (6)

Hamilton, Cooper, Oakley-Boothe, Chilokoa-Mullen, Wanyama, McCann

Unknown (1)

Mebude

A lot depends on how things go with those we are `in dialogue` with, but we are obviously lacking in wide attacking players and need another goalkeeper.

Wee Eck, no mention of Keith Bray on your list. Was that accidental or do you not consider him in the first team squad?

Eck,you posted that just as I was signing I`m to post it myself.

I`m hoping he`s one of those kids that strolls into the first team and looks like he`s been playing for years. 2 years down the line,we get a lot of money for him. I`ve heard nothing but good things about him.

I`m hoping the same for young Andy Tod as he`s clearly a player. What about his brother?

Is it too much to hope the same for Sutherland?

Seeing Mehmet as our only keeper at present gives me the heebie jeebies.

Make or break season for big Matty Todd, he needs to regain that form that got many of us excited. I think he`ll make it.

Kane has probably kept us up,but unfortunately he`s made of glass and nust be costing us a fortune in Gorilla Tape. I`ll be hoping for 2 quality strikers (or 1 if the
manager thinks hes good enough to score goals) so he can be an impact sub,or part of a rotation regiment.

I`d give McCaan another year. Don`t care what others think.

Fogarty, fine player but our owner is ambitious and not scared to spend so who knows what our budget may enable us to get. Of we get rid of Bene though, I`d definitely want Foggy to stay.

Wanyama is a strange one, maybe a pat as you play contract. Just by talking to him suggests that Lennon is staying. I wish they`d just announce it if it`s true. Maybe just sitting the i`s etc.

Some of those still under contract I`d love to see leave but I won`t mention names as its uncouth. I know I`ve already mentioned Mehmet but I can`t be alone on thinking that.

I wonder if the owners will continue working on the academy as bringing through our own talent is the way to go and the best way to make any high profile signings sustainable.

if you presume Lennon to stay, stick to 3 at the back and the "dialogue" players all re-sign, you are looking at a keeper, a left sided centre half, some sort of left wing back competition and a forward. anything else would probably be done only if players leave.

Excited by bray, even after he signed for us in Jan his performances in particular in front of goal improved even further. Tempered of course by the fact it’s a big jump from league 1 to championship as we all know.

Assuming Richie holder and Todd stay it’s a massive season for them, they have struggled in a team down near the bottom and if we sign players that move us up a level then we might well leave them further behind. You need a good squad but they need to show they can come off the bench and make an impact.

Surely Mehmet will leave, even if it’s a loan deal, felt that way with the cameo at Morton. Bene hinges on the court case, not sure when that’s decided but we can’t afford to be left short if it happens after the window closes.

Plenty players to come in though, will be at least 7 new first 11 players looking at the names left. Hopefully we get the majority done early.

Rikaka what it does tell you is at best they unproven and at worst not good enough in those positions at championship level.

I assume both will be part of next years squad so they will get another year to prove themselves, if it doesn’t happen they will likely be moved on. If we are challenging near the top they will likely not be starters anyway.

Todd and KRH have had two bad seasons since coming up to the championship. You`re right that injuries have played a big part in this but there have been times where they had a couple months injury free and still not contrbuted much.

I`m not ruling them out eventually proving themselves at this level, but both need to prove it next year or they will both be going elsewhere after next season. Big season for both of them.

I wouldn`t say Todd has had two "bad seasons" when he`s chipped in with a decent return of goals and assists despite being totally broken physically and latterly mentally over the last two years? Ritchie-Hosler hasn`t recaptured his form, I`ll give you that, and needs to go back to taking men on and whipping crosses in or else he`ll be another in the long line of ex Old Firm players hanging onto full time future by a thread at Hamilton, Queen of the South or some other team of that nature.

Fcda I get that but Todd is 24 in a month. He’s not a young pro learning his trade or just breaking into the team.

Injuries have defo hampered him over the years but he played in 22 matches last season scoring 3 with 0 assists and plenty of games where he was well off the level required and subsequently dropped out the starting 11.

If he wasn’t under contract I suspect he may have been let go so has it all to prove next season.

One good thing about having a new management team is that, presumably, every player starts with a clean slate. Maybe we fans should adopt that approach too.

You may be right about the contract situation. He`s currently 23 so wouldn`t be considered a youngster now but he was just getting established in the team when the injury problems hit after turning 21. He`s had a lot of disruption since then - injuries and managers.

Hopefully we`ll recruit better for next season, but I also hope Todd gets a good pre-season and comes good. It`s a big season for him and KRH.

All the best.

Hopefully, comments like "brutal" and "glad to see the back of him" were made about Craig Wighton without knowing all the relevant factors.

Not only did he suffer badly from injuries (while doing his job as a DAFC employee, BTW), on several occasions during the club`s injury crisis he continued to turn out when he was clearly not fully recovered from these injuries. I appreciate that.

Having said that, I agree it is time for him to move on, and I`m glad he`s got a 2-year deal at Montrose.

Maybe you`re making a rash assumption there, GGR. Sometimes it seems as if we are discussing characters in a soap opera rather than real people.

Craig Wighton has had so many injury issues in the last two seasons he`s probably relieved that he can continue to play at a professional level. It`ll be interesting to see how he does at Montrose. Good luck to him.

I don`t think there are any players who lacked effort over the last two seasons. The primary cause, I would say are down to injuries. Whether that is being out for periods of time or playing with injuries. Both affect performance and fitness over a season. I think I said before on here that the number of injuries players have suffered suggests something isn`t right in training. I would say this is particularly so for the spate of hamstring injuries. It was interesting that a strength and conditioning coach came over recently. In order for us to progress it won`t be just about players it will be about coaching and training methods.

The primary cause is that we signed too many players on contract extentions that were not good enough for this level, after we were promoted.

Let’s be honest, he just wasn’t good enough. The fact he’s ended up signing for a lower-table League One side pretty much confirms that’s his level. I wish him all the best, no hard feelings, but if we’re serious about where we want to go as a club, he simply doesn`t fit into the picture. Time to move on for both parties.

I would argue that a player who has played in the top flight with Dundee and Hearts is certainly good enough for the Championship. Rather than question his ability, I would point to the crippling knee injuries which have dogged him throughout almost his entire career. I fear for him. Playing on could turn him into a cripple, especially if he is playing with painkilling injections, which are likely to mask any damage he may be doing to his body.

Not too unsimilar to Stevie May in that awful knee injuries have majorly hampered his career.

Still think he`d been playing at a higher level if didn`t have those problems, can tell he was a talented boy with good football brain.

He’ll do okay at a club like Montrose, guessing while on loan there he was still full time and training with us?

Part time will help with the injuries, he’s got no mobility or pace any more but still has the footballing brain so could be a big figure for them next year if they can nurse him.

Must be hellish, he`s still a young man, and injuries have clearly taken it`s toll- we could see that last season.

Montrose would be a good wee club to go to, they also are due a complete overhaul of players apparently with some retiring etc.

I see also they extended Ryan Williamson by another year, a player that had a terrible time with injury that effectively ended his career as full time footballer.

Football is the most brutal business sometimes.

From 13/14 ‐ 20/21 (this is according to Flash Score and doesn`t include cups) he scored 16 goals across spells at Hearts, Dundee, Raith and Brechin. He did have one prolific season with us though in 22/23 when he banged in 16 goals which is good going.

I think Montrose is a good fit for him. All the best and thanks for your service to the club.

No offence to him but thank god we won’t see him in a Pars shirt again.

Never been a fan of him at all, he done okay in League One campaign but never looked up for the fight or challenge of the Championship.

All the best.

No offence but…..😂😂

Must be hellish, he`s still a young man, and injuries have clearly taken it`s toll- we could see that last season.

Montrose would be a good wee club to go to, they also are due a complete overhaul of players apparently with some retiring etc.

I see also they extended Ryan Williamson by another year, a player that had a terrible time with injury that effectively ended his career as full time footballer.

Football is the most brutal business sometimes.

Was at the game when it happened to Williamson, assuming it is the game at Forfar being referred to, was a really bad challenge, no getting away from it, but there was also naivety on Ryan’s part, the game was over, must’ve been 2 up or something like that so a challenge that wasn’t necessary - makes it harder to swallow I imagine.

We are getting a bit bogged down here discussing Craig Wighton, I wasnt a particular fan of him as a player but admired him for standing up and being counted in the team when he was clearly not fully fit and taking a bit of slagging from some supporters. Anyway enough backward glances, the new manager hopefully Mr. LENNON will be able to bring in players who have got some pace in them preferably wingers. Will be good if they have a bit of skill with their pace, I think the team is crying out for that, for too long that has been an obvious weakness regardless of formation being played. So here`s hoping for some good signings.

I can remember hearing the snap from the other side of the pitch, was absolutely horrific, amazing he`s able to come back and play at any reasonable level after that.

Wasn`t at that one but i remember the `pop` when Steven Bell ruptured his achilles at Morton. Horrible.

I`ll never forget the Greg Patterson one against Dundee.I was a ball boy at the time, right in line with it, an absolutely horrific break. You could hear the crack from where I was. What made it even worse was how long it took for the medics to get to him. Seemed like an age before anyone properly treated him. Still sticks with me to this day.

c'mon the pars

Ryan`s was such a shame as was right at the end of the game if I remember rightly.

Greg Paterson`s was awful as was the assault on Callum Fordyce that left his foot hanging. Urgh.

Fantastic that they all continued to play after coming back from such horrendous injuries.

COME ON YE PARS!

The one that sticks in my mind was Jim Jeffries’ assault on Leish. Another where the break could be heard across the ground.

John Pelosi on Jim Brown was brutal,

Was still young at the time, could see the "tackle" luckily didn`t see the impact, wasn`t a big crowd in those days, but can remember the sickening noise from the crowd.

Also remember Pelosi coming back to EEP I think with Hamilton, and the crowd went ballistic until he had to be substituted.

Awful stuff, and these were part time players. I believe Jim Brown had to give up his job?

Did Ryan Williamson not suffer two horrific injuries whilst at the Pars? As well as the leg-break at Forfar didn`t he suffer a serious knee injury?

Yeah sure he did. Was it against Brechin?

Jim Bett sliding into Grant Tierney. He was a great player but a dirty bassa.

Williamson’s one v Forfar was horrible.

He was partly at fault for it himself, went flying into a needless 50/50 in the 94th minute in a game we were 3-0 up in, youthful mind probably played a part in that.

The noise was something you wont forget either, despite being on opposite touchline.

That was definitely the worst ever. He should have been charged with assault. Straight after he left Brown in a heap, he whacked Sandy McNaughton and left both of them lying in agony. Total thug

Never forget that one. The Pars were building a good young team then, Campbell twins, Jim Scott, Kenny Watson, that incident set them back and they didn’t recover that season.

Jim Brown sued Pelosi in a civil case, and settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

I was on the opposite side of the ground and am convinced I heard the crack, although that could just be my memory playing tricks!

(I was also at Forfar, just a few yards away from Ryan Williamson`s injury - that was sickening to see, and so unnecessary.)

I was in the enclosure next to where Pelosi assaulted Jim Brown, I was nearly sick with the noise it made. I don’t know why Pelosi was not banned for a while, definitely looked intentional to me.

Delighted the youngsters have signed back on, I wonder if the analytics play a part in that or is Lanza John trusted regarding young players getting extensions ?
Just wondering, no angle or angling.

Hopefully only as cover, hes not top 4 material, his passing for a centre mid is dreadful.

The more of these guys we keep the harder it will be to move up the league, we’ll end up with a squad loaded with midfielders but none good enough again.

Copied from another thread - Concerning that with us still having KRH, Otoo & Matty Todd signed up then us talking to Oakley-Boothe, wanyama, Hamilton and cooper, that’s the nucleus of a very poor midfield for another season.

We’ll defo be bringing in a couple of midfielders who will be the quality starters needed if we want to improve so unsure why do we need all these other midfielders squad players?

The post below replying to me is by one of .nets finest champions of mediocrity!
