 Pre-season training
Topic Originator: wee eck
Date:   Tue 17 Jun 09:06

There`s a long article in the Courier today explaining what happened at pre-season assessment last Friday and at the first day of training yesterday.

Senior sports scientist, Euan Donaldson, who is a Pars` fan apparently, was interviewed. There is a lot of emphasis on individual programmes for players and `hamstrings` were specifically mentioned.

I felt tired just reading it but couldn`t help thinking how far any players signed after yesterday will be behind schedule in their preparation given the amount of individual detail that is applied. They didn`t mention any input from the experts from the States who visited last season to assess fitness issues but I wondered if they influenced the tests and procedures they are following now. Let`s hope it all pays off!

It will be interesting to see if we have less “ niggly “ injuries this season but nothing sport scientists can do about impact injuries during games…and indeed training, as I seem to remember we had a few of those last season.
As Wee eck says though any players we sign now will possibly be behind schedule fitness wise and miss out on all this testing to build individual training programs. I guess it’s something that can be done in the weeks ahead for late arrivals to the squad though.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

Players coming in from now onwards won`t necessarily be sitting on the sofa eating bridies and doughnuts whilst waiting for a phone call.

No, but they`re unlikely to have access to the individually-tailored programmes the current squad are benefitting from. Presumably the preparatory work is done prior to moving on to Bulgaria and Stirling Uni so they won`t have much chance to catch up if they don`t join soon.

What if they`re doing pre-season elsewhere - or mid-season?

Fair enough, but ideally you`d want them tuned into what we`re doing ASAP.

I would have thought it would be a process of continuous assessment throughout the season with a baseline set last week. I would have thought players coming in, albeit later would be subject to a similar assessment.

Fantastic and insightful article. I really enjoyed reading it. It certainly feels like things are being handled more professionally now, or at the very least, we’re doing a better job of showing that we are. As others have said, it’ll be interesting to see if this leads to a noticeable reduction in muscle injuries over the course of the season.

My son is also considering a career in health and fitness when he leaves school (he’s just going into 4th year), so the article helped him get a better understanding of what a Sports Scientist actually does. Really valuable read on a few levels.

Great article and very insightful. Amazing how much of an improvement things are at EEP and the club compared to last season.
Makes you wonder what the German owners actually added to the club.

Lennon clearly clocked the number of hamstring injuries we picked up late last season.Be interesting to see what changes he’s actually made behind the scenes. Could be anything from tweaking training intensity, adjusting recovery protocols, managing game time. Hopefully it’s not just lip service.

The big thing will be if we can stay sharp into the run-in this time. No point flying out the traps if we’re back to square one with half the squad taped together by March. It’ll say a lot about how we’ve tried to progressoff the pitch as much as on it.

Let’s see how we’re looking after that Christmas fixture pile-up. That’s usually when the wheels start wobbling if there’s any flaws in prep. Would be interesting to see if we get a wee cup run how they will effect the squads fitness.

c'mon the pars

It would be interesting to see what the assessments make of Wanyama. Is he back ?

Doesn’t look like it from the photos, although there could be a bit of selective editing going on.

I was listening to NL’s Open Goal interview, and he initially said Wanyama was his best signing at Celtic, before going on to list a few other names. Clearly, he holds him in very high regard, so I reckon he’ll give Wanyama every chance to get fit and back on the pitch.

Hopefully there is some selective editing and there`s new players taking part just not included in any media photos until signed up.

Someone mentioned, either on here or over on P&B, that there were a few trialists in, and they referred to a goalkeeper who was either from Fife or had played there before (or something along those lines). So yeah, I think there must be someone in the mix mate.

There`s more about the pre-season prep from Iain Brunskill on COWS.

The squad`s leaving for a week in Bulgaria tomorrow and all the players, including the youngsters, are going. A friendly game is scheduled for next Thursday. On their return they`ll be using the facilities at Stirling Uni for two weeks.

A brief update on COWS -

`The first team has jetted off to Bulgaria for a pre-season training camp, during which there are plans to play a closed doors match against PFC Slavia Sofia. The fixture will take place on Thursday in the town of Bansko.

Please note this is a closed doors match, due to the lack of facilities on offer to supporters. We will provide supporters a game update post match.`

There are some pics if you want to try and spot any potential trialists!

Apparently we’ve offered Tobi a deal but he’s asked for a bit of time to mull it over. Been training with the squad the past wee while but interestingly hasn’t travelled to Bulgaria with the rest of them.
