Club approved to sell alcohol at upcoming Premier Sports Cup games

https://dafc.co.uk/dunfermline-athletic-granted-alcohol-licence-for-upcoming-premier-sports-cup-match/

Dunfermline Athletic is pleased to confirm that our home match against Stirling Albion in the Premier Sports Cup on Saturday 26 July 2025 (kick-off 3:00pm) has been granted an alcohol licence by Fife Council, allowing the sale of alcohol at the match.

Home supporters will be able to purchase alcohol in the Norrie McCathie Stand concourse only between 1:00pm and 2:45pm, with last orders 2.15pm. All sales will be conducted in accordance with licensing laws, and enhanced stewarding will be in place throughout the licensed period.

As part of the initiative, we will explore how responsibly managed alcohol sales may enhance the matchday experience in a safe and controlled environment.

Alcohol may not be consumed in view of the pitch, and will be restricted to clearly signed, secure areas.

We hope this initiative will add to the matchday experience for our fans, and thank you for supporting this initiative. We’ll provide more details closer to matchday.

It would be great to get some music on to liven it up a bit.

Excellent, I`m gonna get bladdered. I used to be able to work my way through 3 or, at a push, 4 pints during my lunch hour, wonder how many I can get through in 1 hr 15 mins

I`d say a target of 5 to 7 pints is achievable. But you`ll probably see more of the toilet 🚻 then the game 🎮 afterwards

If you`re quick you`ll have time to get to Legends/Charlie Ds for one final one.

I remember, in my pleuky youth, attending a game with a pal who liked a pre-match drink or 3. We had 4 pints in the Paragon (forerunner of Legends) from 2 - 3 pm. As you predict, Tenruh, I had multiple toilet visits. We drew 1-1 with Morton and I missed both the goals. 😔

Hopefully it’s the start of a common sense approach to alcohol in Scottish football stadiums.

Aye and some common sense from fans is overdue certainly in lower levels and lower risk games and increase revenue for the clubs

been to a few games down in the shire and whilst not drinking to usual excess made a difference getting a couple of bottles inside a ground instead of trying to get into some of the pubs

Ps as long as we don’t just have carling as a lager… 🍺

Just let everyone have a drink except Glasgow team games. Job done. Why should everyone else be punished because that pair can`t control themselves?

Think this is a good halfway house between having fanzones outside the stadium and a common sense one inside.
Hopefully in years to come they can do entertainment while punters have a pint such as a TV screen showing whatever football is on at the time.
I’ll miss out as I’m a ST holder in the NW but if they find some way to build an area outside of that I’m all in.

Good to see Scottish football moving out of the dark ages and into the modern day again.

Good idea to host it in the Norrie as well, higher class clientele and keeps it away from those North West heathens!

If fans are intending to drink they will do it beforehand regardless in pubs.
Maybe this way they head along to the ground earlier instead of the pubs.
Same result but the club gets money instead.

Im guessing this will be done with a pop up bar at the NW end of the stand? 🤔 hopefully its with Tennents and Bellhaven and not Carling/Fosters and Guinness…..as said above, keep it Scottish.

Will be the current drink suppliers who put money into the club by having the pouring rights and sponsorship, so Belhaven and Coors. They`ll be responsible for the creation of the pop up bar etc

For what it`s worth Belhaven owned by Green King so English, Tennents owned by C&C so Irish, Carling owned by Coors so American, Fosters owned by Heineken so Dutch. Unless you get a small independent brewery you won`t get Scottish as you put it.

All the breweries uses each other facilities in the production so you can`t even say exactly where its brewed.

Hope we can keep it and make it a regular fixture at EEP. Creates a proper atmosphere when it`s done right and not just for the big games. Hopefully folk can show a bit of self control and not ruin it for everyone. That said, wouldn’t be surprised if it all comes to an abrupt end when folk start chucking pyro or vapes at the Rovers players after a dodgy decision.

ayr have withdrawn from the trial due to concerns and potential breaches of the saftey certificate. Issued raised from crowd "rushing" to the bar area during HT (there were 66 tickets available for access!) and concerns that children would be left unattended whilst adults were in the bar.
https://www.ayradvertiser.com/news/25318374.ayr-united-games-will-no-longer-feature-alcohol-trials/

THE sale of alcohol to regular match going fans will no longer be trialled at Somerset Park.

It comes after the club confirmed they had withdrawn two occasional licence applications for their upcoming Premier Sports Cup fixtures at home to Arbroath and Forfar Athletic.

Alongside fellow SPFL clubs, The Honest Men were set to take part in a pilot scheme seeking to relax the ban on drinking at stadiums.

Ordinary fans have not been permitted access to alcohol in stadiums since a ban was introduced in 1981 after rioting at the previous year’s Scottish Cup final.

Ayr had previously announced that drink would be sold to a maximum of 60 supporters at their first two home League Cup matches.

This would have allowed supporters purchasing the relevant ticket the chance to have four pints of Birra Moretti pre-match and a further beer at the half-time interval.

This would have been available from a pop up bar to be set up two hours prior to kick-off within the accessible area of Somerset Park`s Main Stand.

However, a special meeting of South Ayrshire Council`s licensing board was convened this week after issues with occasional licence applications came to light.

Approval to these was previously granted under delegated powers, but only subject to meeting a necessary condition - namely ensuring the ground`s safety certificate would not be breached by use of the suggested area as a bar.

The authority`s building standards department found that the proposals were in breach of this certificate - which meant the matter was referred back to the board members.

They discussed the application in a special meeting held on Tuesday, July 15.

Building standards confirmed that, despite the failure to meet this condition, they would lodge no formal objection to Ayr`s application.

Though licensing standards officer (LSO) Catriona Andrew noted two matters of concern with regards to meeting board objectives.

This includes concerns over securing public safety and protecting children and young people from harm.

In particular, concerns were raised over the half-time period and crowds "rushing" to the area as well as the potential that "children and young persons were being left unsupervised whilst older companions went for a drink".

Ayr United were noted as the only `trial` club to request the sale of alcohol during this 15-minute break.

The board were also asked to consider the implications of closing off part of a disabled access area for the pop-up bar.

Elected members also stated "disappointment" after tickets for the trial we

It`s not that unusual for there to be a rush of people going to get a half time pie, or standing in a queue for all half time if it`s busy.

I think that’s exactly the reasoning behind it. From a Dunfermline point of view, especially in the Norrie, the concourse is far from ideal. It’s tight as it is when folk are piling out at half time for a pie or to nip to the toilet, never mind throwing alcohol sales into the mix. You’d end up with folk spilling into the stairs and that’s a safety issue waiting to happen. Before the game works but the infrastructure just isn’t there to support it at half time yet, especially when you’ve only got 15 minutes to shift a crowd and get them back in their seats.

doesnt seem to be issues where it happens at grounds in england.

Ayrs proposal was for 1 drink limit at HT. As said above was limited tickets for it (66? i believe referenced) knowing how many tickets sold you could have 66 pints pre-poured (or 40 as example) and when those are collected by eligible token holders they replenish for the rest. the amount of waiting is then reduced and "rush" shouldnt happen as again only designated ticket holders can get access.

Most grounds down south definitely have the edge when it comes to concourse layout with wider spaces, proper flow, and like you say, kiosks that serve everything from a pie to a pint in one go. Makes a massive difference in terms of reducing the half time carnage. From what I’ve gathered about our trial, it doesn’t sound like it’s quite that slick. I could be wrong, but it felt more like a bolt in type option rather than a full revamp of the setup. If folk are having to go to a separate point just for alcohol, it’s hardly streamlining the experience. Might be more hassle than it’s worth in its current state. Maybe Ayr thought it was more hassle than it`s worth.

Seems a lot of faff just for one pint at half time.

I honestly don`t see this working for clubs other than small teams, I saw Stirling Albion set up, and it was basically a table at the back of the stand, I don`t see the attraction.

Most clubs have at least one bar inside the stadium, with heating etc. that`s good for pre and post match, seems enough.

Is there really money to be made from a single pint at half time? Also the safety factors have to be the most important part.
