Couple of guys were missing today, Connor Young, was he just left out of the squad?
“He was left out of the squad. He’s been a bit off it and needs a bit of extra work, I think, just to get up to speed with the rest.”
It’s definitely one of those where you read between the lines a bit. “Off it” and “needs a bit of extra work” sounds like he`s maybe not quite hitting the levels expected in training.
You’d hope it’s just a wee kick up the backside to get him going again. Was a big season for him after the injury last season. Will be interesting to see if he is involved in some capacity on Tuesday. If he’s on the bench or gets a cameo it might tell us he’s still in the plan If he’s nowhere near where lennon expects him to be it could be a difficult time for him. Either way, big few weeks ahead for him.

Not reading too much into it. Could be a clever bit of man management from Lennon to get a bit extra from him at training if he’s not been doing it?

Big few weeks for everyone really …. 3 or 4 still to come in … 4 or 5 will be going out on loan to stay fit and get game time. I won’t be surprised if a couple get moved on at their request. Window closes 31st August. Sutherland brothers out on loan. Fischer away or on loan. I think Connor Young will be fighting for a place with a bit of competition for 1 slot if Kane and Cooper have 2 out of 3 already.

He is still only 20. I suspect as he hasn`t scored, there may be a confidence issue. If he puts in,the hard work goals will come for him, I am sure. He is a bit like Cooper in that respect. A little more time to get up to speed in the championship, but once he does, he will start scoring goals.

And he`s signed up till 2027 end of season, so plenty time.
Seen enough of him (and Cooper) to say that he has good instinct and positioning, definitely worth being patient.
It`s a big step from PT football, and plenty guys get a rude awakening, and plenty take more time to get up to speed.
What I`m sure about, with the intense pre season training is that we will not hang on for years waiting -its a big year for a lot of players in that respect, would assume we will send the younger ones on loan to get mens games under the belt.

already need one forward but might end up needing two by the end of the window.
could afford maybe 1 or 2 going out on loan from the first team and not having to replace them if the positions Lennon has talked about get filled, any more than that and they will need replacements.

On the subject of loans there has been no comment from the club on participation in the new Cooperation Partnership scheme for Premiership clubs. With the Tobi issue I thought at one time that we might try to get Celtic but it looks like that ship has sailed. I can`t see there being much benefit with Hearts or Dundee United plus NL has said he isn`t looking for many incoming loans, though that might depend on the club`s success at landing deals.

Yes. Ayr and Celtic look likely. I`ve just noticed that Tobi has turned 22 so he won`t be eligible. We can also use it to lend out our players to lower league teams so could use e.g. East Eife/Edinburgh City or Spartans to keep the loans local. I`m not sure how it will work but I think there is more flexibility to allow the players to train with their main club.

It`s never been an issue to allow loan players to train with their parent club, that`s an arrangement that`s always been arranged between the two clubs and will continue.
Co-op is meant to free up players on the fringes of first team squads that clubs might be hesitant to release in case they are needed some weeks to be a bench option. Aim is they play for lower club most weeks but can be recalled by parent club weeks they are needed.
I think it`s a stupid system that won`t release the players lower league clubs want, especially given the parent club can`t request a fee or wages covered.

Not wanting to speculate but sure young will come good. He was full time at hibs before stepping down for regular game time so it shouldn’t have been too much of a shock to the system getting back to full time.
With kane’s injury record he should get plenty of game time if he hangs in there, unless we bring in another more experienced striker.
Now got me thinking, we were looking forward to Young’s free kicks, has gilmour or amade or anyone else we have brought in have a quality delivery or a good free kick attempt at goal in them? Kearney? Bray?

Connor certainly has got talent from what I`ve seen.
Hope he screws the nut and makes the most of his second chance at full time football.
If I`m being honest I think he`s needing to get his finger out. Been here since January and now not making match day squads against Dumbarton, whilst Josh Cooper is smashing it out the park as a striker now. He`s going to be left behind.

It’s worth noting that Josh spent a year building with us to get to the point he is at now.
The only similarities between the two players is they are young, attacking players and went full time when signing with us.
Young has a contract until 27 and if it takes him 6 months to find the form, so be it.
With the prospect of another seasoned striker coming in, having Kane, Cooper, the new signing plus a developing Connor Young.. maybe we need to dial back the scepticism.
This isn’t aimed at you personally Bert, just pulling your post as an example.

News of another young Pars striker from Scott Burns in the Record -
`Dunfermline Athletic will consider loan options for Taylor Sutherland, The 19-year-old had a successful spell at Clyde last season. The Pars rate him highly but believe the young striker would benefit from more first-team exposure. Sutherland has also had top team action with the Pars and on-loan at Bonnyrigg Rose.`

A cold is just an example of one of the many reasons he could be out the squad. Lennon said "He`s been a bit off it". There`s no stated time period or reason given. Unfortunately, no manager is going to come out and say "Look, he had a bad kebab last week and it`s been coming out both ends." so you`ll always get vague comments.

"He’s been a bit off it and needs a bit of extra work, I think, just to get up to speed with the rest.”
Doesn’t sound like injury or illness at all that sort of comment’s usually aimed at lighting a fire under the player. Could be attitude, fitness, maybe even just not applying himself the way the lennon expects.
You don’t air that kind of thing unless you’re looking for a reaction. If he doesn’t buck up his ideas he can easily see himself being loaned out to get regular minutes and hopefully sharpen up.
Time will tell, but the ball’s firmly in the his court now. Either he steps up or slips further down the pecking order.

Bray has looked at handy at set pieces from what I have seen. Cooper has taken a few pre-season, his corners look ok, mainly hung up to the far post. Kearney might be useful as well, his crossing looks excellent, something we have lacked for many years now.

Kearney seems to like to cross early. He doesn`t seem to need the proverbial `half-yard`. He seems to have the knack of crossing `round` the defender and he favours the far post - at least that was how it seemed to me on Saturday.

I agree with Jake. Lennon doesn`t say why he`s been "off it" so no point in reading too much into it. You could take it in the negative ways you suggest or it could be due to a niggling injury or minor illness that`s just put him a bit behind.

I think that if he had a cold, for example, then Lennon would say he’d been left out because he’s had a bit of illness. Sure he’s said that before with others?
Sounds to me like he’s trying to get a reaction, probably because he thinks he is capable of doing better than he is. Wouldn’t make sense to be ambiguous if he’s still injured or ill.

Connor Young has it all to prove at this level and strikes me that Lennon will not tolerate the mediocrity that we have put up with in the past so, if this is him laying down a marker, so be it.

Lennon’s comments were pretty telling, needing a “bit extra work” isn’t usually code for injury, it’s more about sharpness, fitness or attitude. Either way, he’s clearly behind the rest and Lennon won’t carry passengers. He’s ruthless when it comes to standards he showed that with the mass exodus at the end of the season. Hopefully it is the early wake up call he needs because there’s a player in there, but these next few weeks are massive imo.

Young definitely has what it takes to be a success here but whether he does or not is entirely up to him. I remember feeling the same about Andy Ryan when he came here and was disappointed he didn’t kick on but I think Lennon will get the best out of Young. You can already see the improvement in Oakley-Boothe since Lennon has came in. It’s early days but he definitely looks more interested and gets more involved than when Tidser was in charge.

What little I`ve seen of him, looks promising, but like a lot of guys at this level, it`s sink or swim.
Lennon is too long in the tooth to have guys hanging round with little or no improvement (as we have had plenty in the past)
The pre season training has been as comprehensive as I can remember, clearly anyone not up to it will need extra work, or/and be loaned out.
I`m not reading much into his comments, he clearly needs work as he`s not been playing much, does the also apply to Matty Todd and pthers? It`s a big year for all these guys. Maybe needs pointing out?

A minor injury or illness recently could have set him back, meaning that as of now... he`s a bit behind everyone else and needs to do more work.
That`s just one possibility amongst many so I wouldn`t read too much into Lennon`s comments.

Cut from the cloth of Clough > O`Neill > Lennon you`d imagine he won`t be one to mess around or suffer fools.
Listening to any of the ex Celtic boys on the various podcasts over the last few years you also get this impression, time for a laugh and carry on when the time was right but otherwise all business and really high intensity training.
