 Serie A and Napoli

I`m getting the strong impression that Serie A isn`t the European powerhouse that it used to be. Last night`s hammering of Napoli by PSV Eindhoven is surely some evidence of that. The fact that players like McTominay and Hojlund become immediate successes in the league when they struggled in the English Premiership also points to the league being slightly below par.

How many English teams were in the CL final last year again? 🤔

How many Italian teams were in the final?

Perhaps you expected me to come to Series A`s defence, Paralex, but you`re right on the money with your evaluation. Quite simply, there isn`t the money it had 30-40 years ago. Italians have not bought into Pay TV to the extent they have in Britain, so clubs can`t compete with the PL in terms of players` salaries. The very best players want to play in England, with Barca or Real in Spain and PSG or Bayern.

ETA. Many PL.clubs also have mega rich backers which Serie A doesn't have, or at least they're not making eye watering sums available.

Money talks, right enough.r

I knew any response from yourself,GG, would be objective. It just seemed that the hype concerning Scottish players such as McTominay and Gilmour starring in Serie A, was slightly overblown. McTominay probably did improve his game last season because he wasn`t closed down so quickly and had more room to flourish, but while the media were highlighting Manchester United`s folly for letting him go, I wouldn`t be convinced that he would have had anything like the success he enjoyed in Italy if he had stayed at United.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to Napoli`s Champions League home game against Sporting Lisbon and must say they looked impressive.

With Lukaku and Hojlund being injured is a major blow to their attacking line. Debruyne and McTominay played well in the night supplying Hojlund for his two well executed goals.

It has been a bit downhill since that night

Another issue is that few clubs own their stadium, so they can`t really monetise that.

On top of that, most of the grounds I`ve been to in Italy ( been to the low dozens) are tips, many have an athletics track (why? Whose watching that much athletics?) so it`s really not attractive for many.

The main area is Italy as a country can be incredibly slow off the mark, and football is no exception, even buying a ticket is a hassle, and they haven`t tried to make it attractive to buy into

Napoli have looked impressive in the games I`ve watched this season. KDB links up well with the ex Man Utd kid. I think last night was a freak result tbh.

Everybody should look at Newcastle`s 2nd goal last night to see Nick Pope`s wonderful assist.

Saw it, 65 yard throw out, reminded me of Peter Schmeicel. Very quick thinking from both Pope and Barnes

Signing KDB has totally destroyed the midfield by trying to shoehorn him in.

^^^ KDB assisted both goals against Sporting Lisbon and he was bossing midfield that night and linking up well with Hojlund
