 Serie A and Napoli
Topic Originator: Paralex

I`m getting the strong impression that Serie A isn`t the European powerhouse that it used to be. Last night`s hammering of Napoli by PSV Eindhoven is surely some evidence of that. The fact that players like McTominay and Hojlund become immediate successes in the league when they struggled in the English Premiership also points to the league being slightly below par.

How many English teams were in the CL final last year again? 🤔

How many Italian teams were in the final?

Perhaps you expected me to come to Series A`s defence, Paralex, but you`re right on the money with your evaluation. Quite simply, there isn`t the money it had 30-40 years ago. Italians have not bought into Pay TV to the extent they have in Britain, so clubs can`t compete with the PL in terms of players` salaries. The very best players want to play in England, with Barca or Real in Spain and PSG or Bayern.

ETA. Many PL.clubs also have mega rich backers which Serie A doesn't have, or at least they're not making eye watering sums available.

Money talks, right enough.r

I knew any response from yourself,GG, would be objective. It just seemed that the hype concerning Scottish players such as McTominay and Gilmour starring in Serie A, was slightly overblown. McTominay probably did improve his game last season because he wasn`t closed down so quickly and had more room to flourish, but while the media were highlighting Manchester United`s folly for letting him go, I wouldn`t be convinced that he would have had anything like the success he enjoyed in Italy if he had stayed at United.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to Napoli`s Champions League home game against Sporting Lisbon and must say they looked impressive.

With Lukaku and Hojlund being injured is a major blow to their attacking line. Debruyne and McTominay played well in the night supplying Hojlund for his two well executed goals.

It has been a bit downhill since that night

Another issue is that few clubs own their stadium, so they can`t really monetise that.

On top of that, most of the grounds I`ve been to in Italy ( been to the low dozens) are tips, many have an athletics track (why? Whose watching that much athletics?) so it`s really not attractive for many.

The main area is Italy as a country can be incredibly slow off the mark, and football is no exception, even buying a ticket is a hassle, and they haven`t tried to make it attractive to buy into

Napoli have looked impressive in the games I`ve watched this season. KDB links up well with the ex Man Utd kid. I think last night was a freak result tbh.

Everybody should look at Newcastle`s 2nd goal last night to see Nick Pope`s wonderful assist.

Saw it, 65 yard throw out, reminded me of Peter Schmeicel. Very quick thinking from both Pope and Barnes

Signing KDB has totally destroyed the midfield by trying to shoehorn him in.

I find it odd how interested people are in another nations league. I`ll generally watch any football that`s on but I`ve no real interest in the English Premier over Serie A, for example. Why is there greater investment by foreign nationals in the English league? Is it a tax dodge, or is it genuinely because it`s considered THE league to watch? Who`s paying all this money to cover the TV budgets for the league? Do people still pay hundreds a month for Sky?!

I suppose my current interest in Serie A is because we have 3 Scottish international players in it, Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson. In the past we had Denis Law playing for Torino and there was at least one other. Apart from that Gazza playing in Rome and the great AC Milan team with Van Basten and Gullit, I think, was special.

I make it 6 Scotland Internationalists in Italy now...the 4 above and also Josh Doig at Sassuolo, Lennon Miller at Udinese. In the league below, Liam Henderson at Sampdoria is there too

For family reasons I visit Italy at least once a year and I`ve made a point of going to see AC Milan each time and they`re absolutely rubbish. The stadium is also falling to bits. It reminds me of Love Street. and not in the sense the locals speak another language.

He`s not wrong though...

Signing de Bruyne has meant McTominay has had to move to the left wing where isn`t comfortable anyway and means he can`t be the guy looking to crash into the box late. At rhe same time, de Bruyne is playing deeper in the centre as a quarterback type player, so the other midfielders have also had to change position, albeit only slightly.

Surely, it`s up to the manager to find a system to get the best out of his squad, if that`s the case? I find it impossible to accept that adding a player of KDB`s quality to a squad is going to make it poorer.

From what I`ve read and heard from fans and pundits in Italy, this is exactly what is being said, last season the midfield was very well balanced, with McTominay being the key player as he could drop deep, or move further forward and totally change the whole way the side was set up, however the manager desired. This season players are being shoehorned in to fit around De Bruyne and it`s not really working

I think Conte is being pressured to play KDB by the owner. You`ll know Signor de Laurentis, GG, and you`ll know that`s entirely plausible.

I haven`t followed Serie A very closely since the Calciopoli scandal in 2006, KP, but De Laurentis is well known to all italian football fans. He`s an absolute tool and often sacks managers after only a few months in post. When he sacked Rudi Garcia, he told him, "I should have sacked you the day I hired you!" 😃

I`m surprised Antonio Conte has lasted this long. He doesn`t get on with the president at all and was set to leave after delivering the Scudetto last season. It`s entirely plausible that De Laurentis wants his star signing to start every week, but Conte is not a compliant manager who would tolerate any interference from his president. Factor in the reaction of KDB himself when he was substituted after a red card v Man City in the CL and you have a powder keg that could explode at any time.

Rumours now circulating that McTominay will make a sensational return to the English Premiership in January as he is unhappy at Conte playing him out of position to accommodate KDB

Not entirely confident I believe these rumours as he is sensationally loved by the Napoli fans

Napoli won again tonight against Lecce (If that`s how it`s spelt). 3 points clear at the top pending Roma`s game in hand. Very much doubt if McTominay or Gilmour would have the slightest desire to leave. Apart from them flying in Serie A, the thought of wintering in the balmy Napoli climate is a big selling point itself. Although, I do have two young Italian friends, from Napoli doing PhDs here in Glasgow and they want to settle here long term. No accounting for taste?

This rumour is taken from the sun and replayed and exaggerated further by teamtalk two of the least reputable sources in football. I never believe any story that quotes ‘a source says’ or ‘he could be upset’ never actually giving any relevant interview or quote from the player.
