 Partick Thistle v Pars
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Tue 25 Nov 01:24

This really feels like the game of the season so far. A lot turns on its outcome. One senses that a draw would be fine, a defeat would not be the end of the world, but a win could prove to be the catalyst to thrust us into a period Pars fans have not seen since the days of Calderwood, Leishman, and Paton.

Looking at recent games, you can see that things are beginning to click - the teamwork, the determination, and the unity of this Pars side is pretty impressive. It doesn`t always work, but when it does, it is a joy to behold.

Neil Lennon and his coaching staff are melding together a good squad. importantly, it`s a squad with depth. Our bench looks strong, even with several significant players out injured.

For the first time I can remember, we have no reason to fear any team in this league. Exciting times.

I see this game as a free hit for the Pars. We`re away from home, against a team going well and full of confidence after beating the title favourites, so we`re not expected to win. Conversely, all the pressure is on Partick. I hope we approach the game without nerves and have a real go.

If we can open the scoring, we have a real chance of taking the 3 pts.

We all know that the Championship is a division in which every team can beat every other team on their day. It`s almost always like that.

In that context, small differences in application, determination and team work make a huge impact over the course of a season. Obviously a 5-0 win at Arbroath is significant, but the 1-0 wins over Ayr and Morton seem more significant to me. Those are the types of matches that we`d let slip in previous seasons.

We have mostly young squad and they can see that on field success is being rewarded with international caps and new contracts. That`s massive. They can also see that players like Hammy and Matty Todd are being rewarded for stepping up when they`ve been out of the team. That`s also massive.

A couple of months ago we`d all have been freaking out about a line up without Chris Kane or Bene in it. Now the team have the confidence to win whether they`re there or not. That`s also massive.

I`m feeling quite confident that we`ll make the play offs and that we`ll deserve to be there, but I`d be more than happy watching most of this team in the Championship next year, because watching the Pars right now is more fun than it`s been in ages.

I feel the players are due Thistle one. Their behaviour at East End intimidated the young team and gamesmanship was high on their agenda. Morton tried the same tactics and failed as the young lads now have some bite to their game. We have unfinished business with Thistle.

Really looking forward to it, dont get to as many games as I`d like these days but always enjoy a trip to Firhill.

Don`t think there is anything as a `free hit` but I understand the premise. For me we should always be looking at taking something from the game and building the team to do that tonight as well.

Hoping we`ll edge it but think it`ll be a score draw.

Buzzing for it!

C'mon Ye Pars!

I still think were to see the best of the likes of Amade, Caceres and Kearney as well. None of these boys signed here to stay in the scottish championship for too long. Hopefully a big crowd tonight to back the team. Bring it on!

Mark Wilson said on the Open goal podcast ,he couldnt believe what Lennon said in his post match interview, saying we had plenty chances and should have had a penalty.
Mr Wilson seems oblivious to the SFA referee committee admitting the referee got it wrong and the Pars should have had a penalty and Partick sending off.

I hope Caceres feels he has some unfinished business with O`Reilly and directs that anger in the right way. I`m still not happy about the shirt pulling leading to the sending off...

Pitch conditions really ain’t great I don’t think.

Andy Tod offside 3 times within the first 10 minutes when he really shouldn’t have been in any of the plays. He’s looking quite tired tonight..lazy touch on a counter attack too cost us a decent chance.

Firhill pitch looks absolutely woeful, not surprising that the passing has looked mostly poor.

Not a terrible first half by any means but Thistle have had the better of the chances and probably just about deserve the lead as a result.

Up front we look a little bit toothless, not totally convinced by a MacLeod, Tod & Càceres trio, didn`t see an awful lot when they played on Saturday and seeing similar today.

Otoo has looked rusty, which is understandable given his lack of playing time.

We started pretty well first 15 minutes but our passing has disintegrated since then. Why we choosing to pass to a guy who has a PT player right on his back is ridiculous. Not a single player looks to be "on it".

I only saw the last 20 mins, but Otoo has been the weakest link by some way in that time. Thistle pressing well all over the park and we`re mostly letting them put us off.

A bit of composure needed, bur there`s only a goal in it.

Bit more pressure towards the end of the half, Matty coming into a game, apart from that Otoo looking a bit vulnerable, and getting targeted more.

Partick are streetwise, need to dig in the middle a bit more. Not bad though, can certainly get back in the game.

He has been guilty of that a few times in the last two or three games and that effort to cross just on HT sums it up…….pretty poor tbh.

Ewan Otoo? Can he actually pass a ball? The short two or three yard ones yes, but as soon as he tries to do something else he invariably gives it away.

Good start to the game but we have offered very little since the first 15mins, too many times players are turning back instead of driving forward. Don’t think Caceres has beaten his man once yet.

Need to more direct second half.

Ref has been pretty good so far.

What an opportunity we missed in 2014.

I was shot down in the flames by friends when I said we should’ve cashed in on Otoo when given the chance. Yes, he looked great in what was a very poor side the previous two seasons. But now we have a stronger selection of players to choose from including young John Tod, he’s hardly kicked a ball..not remotely surprising to me.

We are only a goal down so I am always hoping that we come out in the second half with all guns blazing , of course if we can pass the ball to each other it would certainly help , park is the same for both teams and we are normally reasonably good at passing , hopefully a first half blip

Otoo seems 5th choice in centre mid now, behind Gilmour, Amade, Hamilton & Boothe

also 5th choice centre back behind JCM, Abdulai, J Tod & Bene...

I was going to say 2nd choice LB but tbh i don`t think he`s a LB at all

Really hope he can stick in and take his chance to get back in the team, the good thing about Lennon is that he`s shown the players they can get back in the XI if they do well when they get the chance

To be fair to Caceres, I don`t see how he can do much when our players keep passing it out the park or punting it up high to the non existent target men up front.

Such a hard watch tonight, both teams below par IMO. But they took their one chance and we didn’t take any of our half chances second half.

Andy Tod is absolutely horrendous 1v1 with a defender, gets shoved off the ball way too easily. Least we looked a wee bit better when Kane came on, gives us presence up top.

Onto Saturday now in the Scottish Cup. Would make a few changes, maybe give Tod a rest and would like to see Bray get a start.

Most matches you`d be saying that almost everyone played well. Tonight almost everyone didn`t play well.

Tons of missed passes throughout. JCM looking awful on the all. Otoo a bombscare. Nuru bullied. AJT knackered. Jefferson anonymous.

Bray had some bright moments when he came on. Chris Kane made an impact as he always does.

We might have nicked a draw, but we`d barely have deserved it.

Maybe too many games recently, with so many players taking part in internationals?

All I can say is Thank Feck that is over
We could have played all night and not scored
It`s one of those games you have to put out of your mind and move on

Yep, never looked like scoring.

We didn`t have an effort on target all night ! if you cannot hit the target you cannot score
at the end of the day we knew we would get games like this so we just have to accept it

Just one of those games where nothing seemed to click, passes were going wayward for both teams but just have no real ruthlessness up front.

MacLeod, Càceres and Tod were all pretty poor so nothing really stuck for them. Fitzpatrick had that rare bit of quality in what was otherwise a poor game. Terrell should be saving the shot for me but JCM was beaten inside too easily as well.

Without a physical presence like Stewart or Kane when he`s fit, you`re going to struggle as the team doesn`t have much pace going forward.

Result not a huge surprise but our performance was. Not sure their keeper had a save to make.

A few really disappointing individual performances tonight.

Patrick must love playing us.

On a positive note Kane looked much better (than Saturday) and Bray was creative when he came on.

First half was dreadful. Things improved after the substitutions in the second half. Chris Kane made a big impact.

A quite unbelievable number of poor passes tonight. Was the pitch a factor?

Heading back from Firhill now - that was brutal, toothless, Otto was a bombscare, Caceres offers nothing. That’s as poor as I’ve seen them this season. Patrick weren’t much better. Fine margins. The keeper should have saved that. Aw well!!

Went with my Thistle supporter pal. Got a free ticket to the John Lambie stand. I didn`t think we were that bad. Thistle closed us down and gave us very little space to move the ball around. We did have a couple of great attempts in the first half. One flick from a Matty Todd cross just inches away. Their goal was from our bad defending, big hole in our cenral defence. We did have some chances in the second half but like the Morton game on Saturday, the home team looked fairly solid in defence. Sad to say, the best team won on the night but we were nowhere as bad as some are suggesting. Just hope everyone got back home safely before midnight to a warm house.

Lennon post match explaining that Kane can`t play 90 mins any more is disappointing. although not unexpected, He is only 30. If and a big IF we can manage to find a striker from somewhere in Jan, I can see us moving Kane on. I don`t think (and its only my thoughts) that Lennon is over impressed with his fitness.

Just sounds like a game too many for some of the players tonight especially the younger ones who were on international duty recently.

Really poor tonight. Otoo had an absolute nightmare, everything he touched turned to sh’te. The sheer panick in our back 3 when they repeatedly just clipped balls over their heads was worrying, the back 3 were all over the place. Caceres is toiling a bit now, could probably do with a rest on Saturday.. I said before the game this wasn’t a game for him & i was right. The front 3 of Tod, McLeod & Caceres just doesn’t trouble teams.. no pace, no strength, none of them confident enough to beat a man.

I wasn`t at the game so I can`t comment on performances but to say Macleod lacks pace seems weird. I can`t believe he lost it between Saturday and tonight.

As usual NL seems to be less critical of the performance than the consensus on here. He wasn`t happy with the goal we lost from a defensive point of view and thought Terrell could have dealt better with it.

Barney has an injury but he won`t be involved on Saturday as Falkirk don`t want him cup-tied. I think he said JT had a virus. I hope he doesn`t pass it on to his brother! NL seemed to acknowledge AT needs a rest but he wants a Cup run so maybe won`t make too many changes for QOS.

The pitch was really bad and it can`t have been too far away from being put off. It got worse through the game and looked pretty dangerous in the last 10 minutes. Players looked to be struggling to turn and at the end seemed to be slipping everywhere.

So, when it`s like that, you have to take the conditions into account. The first half was an absolute joke and I`ve no idea what a manager can be thinking to have his team play like that on such a difficult pitch. Whenever we`ve had a midweek game this season, that and the following Saturday often see us play that slow stuff, maybe trying to save some energy. Without Stewart up front, we also lacked a credible direct option. But come on, intricate passing on that pitch, with an opposition pressing you in your own half? We started OK and had a couple of chances but once they started to force us into mistakes we were very bad. It really needed a more energetic style, but it doesn`t seem that the manager wants to do play that way when we have an extra game.

Second half was a bit better but we only managed the one real scoring chance and didn`t really deserve a point. Pretty much the reverse of the game on Saturday. That free kick we messed up after fannying about with it just seemed completely fitting. I`d have liked us to try to press them to force a mistake, especially towards teh end, but we never committed to it with more than 2 players.

It`s not a disastrous result, but it`s a bit annoying that we never really gave ourselves a chance.

Frustrating evening all in all.
Thistle deserve credit for not giving us a minute on the ball and pressed us very well and we were always in the match till the end but lacked that cutting edge up top once again.
Kane gave us a lift when he came on with some intelligent play but we were playing hit and hope much of the time.
Matty Todd was played well out of position too on the right side and it showed.

Off the pitch, I have to say the facilities in the main stand are appalling.
The space between seating was tiny and we had to beg a steward to let us go a different way just to get a pie and a drink despite only a handful of people in the rest of the stand.

Not a horrendous night but on a near frozen pitch we tried our best but got out just desserts to be honest.

Thought we were really poor, majorly struggled with the surface but got to grips eventually just too little too late.

Kane made a big difference when he came on. Him and Tod together could be a real threat then the likes of Barney and Zak in the mix too.

Really shaky defensively centrally, Abudlai wasn`t great but Otoo had a shocker. He`s not a centre back though especially as part of a 4. Fraser maybe our best on the night but slim pickings.

Thought Oakley-Booth was decent when he came on, injected pace into the game and looked to grab it.

C'mon Ye Pars!

I think Euan Otoo is just lacking game time. I thought we looked a bit tired and that led to lack of concentration. Andy Todd looked finished to me after about 65 mins. Too many games in a short spell. As NL says, it shows how far we have come if we are disappointed to lose to Partick Thistle away from home. We can play better but Partick wouldn`t let us play. They closed us down quickly and were more physical. Not much between the teams at the end of the day.

Even PT commentators were questioning the state of the pitch and how dangerous conditions seemed to be getting.

Wasn`t a good advert for Championship football.

Was talking to one of the staff before the game started.
It was literally touch and go if the match was to go ahead or even completed.
I get it’s the same for both teams but the surface was really bad and Thistle just happened to use it better than us.
I still don’t think we were nearly as bad as some are making out however.
We did open them up and had plenty of the ball but like Saturday, we took the wrong options and clearly had players playing out of position.

"If and a big IF we can manage to find a striker from somewhere in Jan, I can see us moving Kane on."

need another striker no matter what and that was the case in the summer, Stewart more than likely will go back to Falkirk so be needing two.

pitch didnt help and injuries definitely didnt help considering the replacements and shows still how much change is needed in the squad in all aspects.
