 John `Dixie` Deans (d)

The prolific goalscorer for Motherwell and Celtic has died at the age of 79.
He scored 89 goals in 198 appearances for Motherwell and 124 in 184 appearances for Celtic. He was capped twice for Scotland without scoring.

Signed for Celtic from Neilston Juniors, at least he played for Neilston Juniors. He may have gone to Motherwell first and from there to Celtic. Anyway a very memorable player. Scored a hattrick in the Scottish cup final against Hibs, if I remember correctly.

Here`s an interesting bit of trivia about him from wikipedia -

`He is the only player in Scottish football history to twice score a hat trick in a major cup final, achieving the feat in the 1972 Scottish Cup Final and the 1974 Scottish League Cup Final, both against Hibernian.`

Amazing that he only got two caps.

It`s bloody tough being a legend

Also from wikipedia - `He was left out of the Scotland squad for the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany. He had made the initial 40-man squad but missed the final cut of 22 as Donald Ford and Denis Law were selected instead.`

Denis was 34 and well past his best but had never played in the WC finals and it was thought his selection was partly based on sentiment as I recall.

My memory is that Denis was indeed "past it" in 1974, and he only played in Scotland`s first match, against Zaire, and he found it difficult to match the pace of the game. In Willie Ormond`s defence, it was a fairly inexperienced squad, with only Law and Bremner having more than two dozen caps.

Although Donald Ford was in the squad he didn`t play any games in the finals, and in fact never played for Scotland again. Morgan, Dalglish, Jordan and Lorimer were Scotland`s attackers. (Jimmy Johnstone was on the bench, but didn`t feature at all!)

I suspect Joe Harper might have been picked ahead of Dixie Deans to go to Germany, but I am doubtful if either would have played. However, with hindsight the goal threat from either would have been useful, as just one more goal against Zaire would have seen Scotland qualify for the next round.

Remember him playing for Motherwell at East End possibly season 1967/68. He was getting no change out of Roy Barry and after one particularly hard tackle he lost the heid and kicked Roy and was sent off. Think the Pars won 3-0.

In 1975 Hibs brought Roy back to Edinburgh to stop Dixie scoring against them.

Roy was quite upset when he got this news earlier today.

RIP Dixie.
