 VAR tomorrow?

Am I right in thinking VAR will be in operation tomorrow vs Hibs? And will this be the first time we`ve had VAR at EEP?

Nope, VAR is only used at grounds that can provide it 👍🏼

But as the game is live on BBC, what would be stopping them? Not being argumentative, I`m genuinely not sure of the system. I assumed VAR was a separate package, that could rock up in a van, plug in to the TV feed, and work regardless of location, as long as the match had sufficient TV cameras? Or is there additional cameras/systems that need to be installed at each ground?

I think these two questions from the SFA FAQ answer that.

How many cameras will there be?

A minimum of six cameras – two in the main stands, one on each of the 18-yard lines and one behind each goal. If there are any additional cameras at the match (e.g. Sky matches), the VAR will have access to the additional cameras.

Who is providing the technology?

We are working with Hawk-Eye Innovations, the leading provider of VAR technology in world football. We will be using Hawk-Eye equipment that is used globally by all other associations supplied by Hawk-Eye and is approved by FIFA.

The top flight sides all pay their share towards the 1.2m a year running cost for VAR as well.

It`s not cheap.

VAR will definitely NOT be at EEP tomorrow! The rules for the cup are that it will be in attendance if (a) tv is in attendance and (b) VAR is already at the ground.

Since VAR is not already at EEP it won’t be there. The only time you’ll see it at a championship club is the playoff final.

VAR will only be in use at the 4 live TV games being hosted at Premiership grounds in this weekends Scottish Cup 4th round card.

Those games being;

Rangers vs Annan Athletic
Auchinleck vs Celtic (at Kilmarnock)
Aberdeen vs Raith Rovers
Hearts vs Falkirk
From Pie and Bovril twitter

The fifth televised game, Dunfermline vs Hibs, does not have VAR as East End Park does not have the tech.

The other ties hosted at Premiership grounds do not have VAR as the teams involved opted not to use it (and pay for it).

Dundee United have opted not to utilise VAR for their Scottish Cup fourth round showdown against Ayr United.

Competition rules state that any Premiership clubs hosting televised ties are obliged to use the technology, with the broadcast fee somewhat subsidising the additional costs.

However, it is optional for all other top-flight sides.

Courier Sport understands it costs teams in the region of £10,000 to employ VAR for a one-off tie – over and above the yearly amount paid for its implementation in the Premiership.
That fee is split between the two clubs, meaning Ayr United would also be hit in the pocket and lessen the windfall they would receive from the split gate receipts.

As such, the teams are content to proceed without the technology in place.

Dundee United are top tier - how do they dip out if it’s obligatory ?

Or does “other top flight” mean the lower league SPFL. Ayr not willing to pay their share ?

Who`s paying for it to be used at Rugby park? Shouldn`t fall on either club, they`re being forced to play at a stadium neither want to be playing in.

Thanks for clarification.

Based on a large amount of examples where VAR has been shambolic, I’m happy to just berate the ref tomorrow !
