Very negative half from us, constantly passing backwards. East end park atmosphere was flat. We don’t score enough goals.

Second half was a slog but we still made chances, far from pihs.
Arbroath got tighter on Amade & were closing us down quicker, opened up a bit more space for Fraser & Todd though.
Morrison wasn`t great but he must be a nightmare to play against. I have to say I don`t think Abdulai should play in midfield

I must have missed Arbroath scoring tonight oh that’s right they didn’t and we take a 1-0 lead up there with Arbroath needing to score twice to win the tie

Poor second half but we have a vital lead.
Could have been more but for a couple of great saves from their keeper. Meanwhile Ox had 1 save to make - in the 89th minute.
Tough second leg but it`s in our own hands - another shut out & we`re through.

Abdulai can play in there but I wouldn’t have disrupted the defence to do that. Hamilton could have come on in a straight swap.

Arguably one of the poorest performances all season. We were second to every ball, out thought to everything. Passed off the pitch. Just as well we took our chance early doors.
Do not fancy us up there on Friday with a one goal lead if we can’t win the battle at home. It’ll be a battle like no other at Gayfield.
If the players have one eye on the cup final and keeping fit etc then they need to get a grip. Or others have their minds next season, Mullen, Ngwenya etc, away from the club, well take a seat on the bench.

We are winning 1-0. We were great first half then they tightened up. They will have to come out and try to get a goal in the next leg and we will exploit that. I’m pretty confident we are going through COYP..

Strange second half.
Some poor passing and some poor decision making from the Pars.
And the ball decided to break to an Arbroath player almost every time.
I suspect Lennon might start with some of the young`uns on Friday to try and snatch an early goal.

I can’t see that happening. We struggled to create anything of note against Arbroath on Friday, even with the younger players. Cooper might start, but I don’t expect any major changes.
This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

Just hope the players are not as defeatest as some on this thread.
It was always going to be a tough match up. We need to stand up to them better physically but I feel we can hurt them on the counter like we did in the 5-0 earlier in the season.

Of course your going to lose the midfield when your playing a main striker and Tod and Morrison. We almost tried to play on the counter last night.
They had the extra man in the middle of the park so always had an out ball and picked up every second ball. We are still a bit timid and not doing enough of the dark arts with we nudges etc. at least at Arbroath I expect Morrison to drop out and another midfielder to come in so we’ll be matching up in there.
Arbroath were better than us over 36 games, we’ll do well to get through this playoff against them. Partick and Celtic won’t have seen anything to worry them last night.
Thought Todd and Morrison were poor last night, Todd in particular took the easy option to pass back far too often, back to being unconvinced by Morrison, he’s fast and works hard but there’s a lack of quality in his play and he’s just too easily eased off the ball, is he really the level required to compete for the league next year?
I think we need to temper expectations here, this team finished 4th so even getting past Arbroath would be a great result. That was our strongest team so plenty improvements will be needed in the summer to move to competing nearer the top. We finished 15 points behind Partick.

Where would we be without .nets resident expert to tell us how to think.
We beat Arbroath in the first leg of a 2 leg play off. That`s all. I don`t think it does anyone any good to look any further than the next game and I get the feeling that`s what the players/manager thinks too.
Instead of beating them with a stick, maybe try actually supporting them. What theyre trying to achieve is rarely done and is being made even more difficult by fixture scheduling due to HOW SUCCESSFUL we have been.

Some really negative posts on here considering. First half we were good and unlucky to only be one ahead. Second half, not as good but over the whole game, we had by far the best chances. Their keeper had 2 great saves, we blasted a few over that should have been better and Kane was inches away from getting on to a defensive calamity. Our keeper didn`t have a save to make!

If you want a bit of positivity, we`ve taken 8 more points than Arbroath have since Christmas (and only 2 fewer than Thistle).
If you add in the cup games, we`ve had 12 clean sheets since Christmas from a total of 22 matches.
We have a reasonable chance of going through on Friday.

Arbroath are a well drilled organised hard working side. We were the better footballing side, they were better in terms of physicality and approach to the game. We looked nervous at times with stray balls in the final third. Our goal was well worked but I didnt think we created enough clear cut chances. A Todd opportunities were more half chances that most keepers would save. Tactically I would imagine Fridays came will be different. They need to score two. If we stand up better to them physically we can win the game.

A lot of very short memories amongst early posters on this thread. We hadn’t won either home game v Arbroath this season, and hadn’t won any of our last eight playoff matches, against QP/Rovers/DUFC/Cowden, so it’s good to get those monkeys off our back. Playoff games, like semi-finals, are usually tightly contested and are rarely classic matches, so taking a lead into the second leg is a real positive and gives us a strong platform to progress.

As above absolutely right, I don’t think the quality of our football is helped by the East End pitch, it’s been a long time since I saw it in such bad nick. More suitable to long ball teams like Arbroath. I thought the Pars did well last night, perhaps should have had two or three by half time but did really well to keep a clean sheet. It was always going to be tight.

What is actually going on with the pitch over the last couple of seasons? It looks terrible and can`t be easy to play on. Did the club not invest heavily in it last summer as well? The groundsmen historically have done a great job on the playing surface but the last few years it`s not been good enough

I think the pitch suffers from the fact it is below road level in terms of drainage and is in part shade at various times of the day. This is more so during the winter when tge sun is low. It seems to be a bit patchy in places, obviously around the goalposts and in the corners. Not sure what the solution is, but I imagine we are playing more on it than back in the 1980`s for example.

The stand side never gets any sun on winter. We could do with a few sets of LED lights to trick the grass into growing.
The goals are heavily sanded too. Maybe with the amount of games we’ve had, it’s not been possible to returf these areas and have time to knit ?

I don’t think the result could be a surprise – disappointing, yes, particularly after getting a very good early goal, but no shock.
For a start, Arbroath finished above us in the table – I think they showed much more consistency over the season so maybe were slight favourites.
We’ve also had a lot of turmoil recently - huge cup ties then important league games interspersed with relatively meaningless fixtures. Lots of chopping and changing in the squad.
You can see it with teams in Europe – it’s a big jump from defending, defending, defending in Romania on the Thursday then trying to beat St Mirren at home on the Sunday. It’s very difficult to play consistently well in such circumstances, particularly at the tail end of the season when tiredness and fitness can become an issue. Squad rotation is essential, but performance can be compromised. Lennon will be used to such changes of environment with a succession of big games – the players not so much.
Then you’ve got the unfamiliarity of a two-legged match. The mentality has to be different – sure you want to put it to bed or at least be two goals ahead at half-way, but you certainly don’t want to be behind. It’s not surprising players are a bit more timid.
It’s not quite happening for some players – particularly Morrison – he’s constantly trying that little trick where he knocks the ball a yard away and tries to turn and run, but defenders are wise to it, and he loses possession. I think he probably needs to vary it a bit (but it only needs to work once and it’s a goal – compare Kane’s dummy and Tod’s turn for the goal last night).
Defensively we’re pretty solid, but my concern is we are going to get a couple of bad breaks – we have been riding our luck a little recently, and that can’t last, but I think we need to play with a bit more positivity. This is where a manager has to earn his corn

Morrison has a lot of supporters but I find him to be frustrating and a one trick pony at times.
If I was playing in the team and see him get the ball, I’d be hesitant to make a run into space up the park when in your mind, he’s likely to lose the ball very quickly.
It’s not good for a possession built team.

I think Callum Morrison when he has the ball tends to look up at times with no options available to cross into the box. He gets caight in two minds and ends up losing the ball. He is a bit too easily pushed off the ball and is not at his best with ball to feet in my view. He is better running into and creating space and running on to the ball.

Ok we’ve analysed this to death.
So what if they’re above us in the league. It’s now about 1 game, they have to win by more than 1 goal. Football is full of underdogs winning. We were inconsistent at times in the league but we beat 2 premier league teams on our road to the Scottish Cup Final. So we have it in us to go to Arbroath and win, and if we do then and only then should we worry about the next game.

If someone had told me in mid January that we`d be going into the second play off game against Arbroath with a fully eligible, almost fully fit squad and a one goal advantage, I`d have ripped your arm off for it.
Also, I`d have said you were a happy clapping fantasist.
We kept Hibs out. We kept Aberdeen out. We kept Falkirk out. We kept Arbroath out last night. We`re capable of keeping Arbroath out again and we`re capable of scoring against them.
It won`t be easy and we might need a bit of luck, but we can do it. We might not, but we can.
