It could be the title winning game tonight for the Jambos if….

Hearts beat Falkirk and
Motherwell beat Celtic

or will it go to the last game of the season for the showdown between the jamtarts and second placed hoops.

Or if ye prefer something more low key but equally important, you can watch live on the BBC Scotland channel the SPFL Championship final play off first leg between

Alloa and Stenhousemuir (ko7.45pm)

My maths may be wrong, but Celtic would "only" need three goals to steal it on the last day.

One doesn`t really make any difference, need another one (having just made it 3).

Having lost the league on the last day in 1965 on goal average, 1986 on goal difference, as things stand with a minute or two to play, it could be on goals scored this year.

Took them 10 seconds to watch two grainy far away images today to give a dodgey penalty…….took them 5 minutes to watch replays and deny a stonewaller for Hearts at the weekend…….and thats not to add in the Johnston red and offside goal from the OF either 🤷🏻‍♂️ McInnes will be banned from touchline on Sat based on how angry he will be.

It`s fixed. Always will be to those two. Hearts should be Champions tonight. They were denied a stone-wall penalty against Motherwell and now Celtic getting a non-entity penalty. Scottish football could genuinely be one of if not the most corrupt league in Europe.

It’s a scandalous decision for me.. it’s physically impossible to slap the ball that distance. Said with 5 minutes to go they’d find something on VAR to give Celtic a chance, it’s happened countless times for both sides of the OF.

Derek McInnes is furious.

“When they were checking a 96th minute penalty, you assume they [Celtic] are getting it," Hearts head coach Derek McInnes tells Sky Sports.
"It`s disgusting. We`re up against everybody. I don`t think it`s a penalty.
"If I`m Motherwell, I`m really disappointed. It`s so poor and it looks as though [Celtic] have been given it. They are very fortunate.
"It`s going to the last game. We`re delighted to be part of it.
"To do it, we`re going to have to go and get a positive result. What a game it`s going to be."

Up against everyone.

A Hun being upset. Hahahahahahaha.

It looks like Trusty going into the defenders arm with his shoulder, and it`s that contact that puts his hand to his head... If Trusty isn`t there, the defender arms come down as leverage when heading the ball and there`s no incident

The penalty was awarded in the 96th minute although I suspect the game might have went on longer until Celtic got a chance

Are Celtic fans on a warning for invading the park at the Old Firm cup game?

``I don`t know if that comment was directed toward me, but I can assure you that I am no Celtic fan.``

You are wrong though. The Celtic player causes the arm to move towards the ball. It can`t be deliberate handball by the Motherwell player. His arm is in an unatural position because the Celtic player has nudged him.

The fact the ref takes such a short time to conclude that`s a penalty is very questionable.

Pars may have been up against it in the cup final player for player but the fact there are external sources acting as a fail safe if Celtic are struggling, shows you how difficult it is being a team outside the old scum.

Michael Stewart claims there have bèen 6 VAR decisions in games recently which have all gone against Hearts in their quest for the title.

Why didn`t the `Well boy just pull his hand doon to one side a wee bit away fae the ball? His hand wasn`t glued tae his heid. He could`ve got it out of the way. Gutting!

But I can`t see why it was a pen. His hand only acted as if it was part of his head. It made no difference if his hand was there or not, he didn`t use it to push the ball away. His head pushed his hand against the ball. Head, hand and ball were all in contact simultaneously. OCH! It`s such a stinker if it costs them the title.

I thought they were looking at the elbow to the Celtic guy`s pus then suddenly it`s a handball.

Knew what was coming as soon as it was "delayed".

Hearts wouldn`t have won the title yet with a Celtic draw, so they still have to go get at least a point at Parkhead & it`s still in their own hands.

The only thing it changes is that Celtic just need to win, rather than score x amount of goals.

Hearts are more than capable of an away draw this season & fully deserve the title if they can see it through.

No fan of either team but this challenge has been infinitely miles better than one cheek winning at a canter.

Hopefully we can get a more sustained challenge in the next few years and other teams can step up.

Simply a scandalous decision in that big a situation. You can watch 100 replays of it and there`s still no conclusive evidence to go against the on-field decision from the referee.

VAR needs to stop trying to re-referee games and only step in when there`s a glaringly obvious error that has been missed. Would they have stepped in for the foul on Matty Todd on Tuesday night? I have my doubts.

`In the Cup final and a Celtic player puts his hand above his head and touches the ball are we all saying it’s not a penalty? Now whether we get it is another matter but it’s still a penalty.`

-------------------------------------------

His hand wasn`t above his head though - a la Maradona - it was flat against his forehead and he didn`t attempt to divert the ball with his hand. I suppose you could call it an unnatural position but it`s where the law needs changing so that accidental handball, or when no advantage is gained, should be no penalty. Otherwise you could have a goalie taking a goal kick that accidentally strikes his team-mates hand in the box, given as a penalty when there`s no opponent within 50 yards. The rule is supposed to penalise unfair advantage, but like many rules it`s upheld for the sake of it.

definite corruption !

additional time was far too excessive - looking for an excuse to give Celtic a goal

motherwell players hand was pushed up by the Celtic players shoulder, and definitely not intentional. no way a penalty.

now, when you see Bobo Balde`s hand, thats a different story and a penalty.

always things are enableb for Celtic and Rangers

As I said on the conspiracy thread, there`s a lot of hypocrisy swilling around. There`s absolutely no way Beaton and Dallas conspired to give Celtic a potentially title winning penalty in added on time. Why would they leave themselves open to charges of cheating and corruption if they weren`t absolutely sure of the decision in their own minds?

Collective Silo would be my thoughts. I think the transcripts need to be released after the season finishes to protect what would come from this. Was there any challenges between the pair. As I said earlier the system in one of the threads, the system is clearly broken with this much debate. I wouldn’t say conspiracy or cheating, I think it is indecision due to no clear guardrails in their decision process.
Personally I think it is absolutely the wrong decision having played football, but the letter of the law is being argued here and as such, to me, the system is broken.

The biggest issue in Scottish football is tho it was down the other end or as you say if it happens in the cup final it would never be a penalty Celtic get the ify calls when other teams don’t against them and when it happened I said one thing that doesn’t look like a hand ball but if someone finds an angle that shows it hitting his hand I would agree it’s a handball but the 1 angle Beaton gets because stick with me this is the main problem here he goes over to var gets a wide shot takes 15 seconds you cannot tell if it hits his hand or not and points to the spot

I think people are still debating it, because of the ramifications on where the league title ends up; magnified as this could be the first time in over 40 years(?) that it could be someone outside the ugly sisters.

Motherwell had a bit of a sustained attack directly before that incident and had almost scored two or three times, so any great conspiracy would have blown the whistle earlier to prevent hearts winning it there and then if they had scored. In the cold light of day, disappointing as it is, it did look like it hit his hand first and I’d be fuming if that wasn’t given to us as it was a penalty.

That said, Celtic still need to beat hearts and given how frail Celtic looked against Motherwell, I feel there’s still a very good chance hearts can go there and get a result

The chat about the time added on is a non starter. Additional time is a minimum of X minutes, so if they add on, say, four minutes but there are further stoppages, that time will be added on as well. I don’t see many valid complaints there.

My issue is that this is yet another example of the inadequate standard of refereeing. We’ve seen examples of poor officiating in every Scottish league this season. Inconsistent VAR decisions, missed penalties, soft red cards, offsides not being reviewed properly, and obvious fouls being ignored. Fans, managers, and players across the country have all raised concerns about the lack of consistency and accountability from officials. The fact none of our officials are going to the world cup doesn`t come as a surprise to me. Even the so called best officials in the Scottish game can`t make consistent calls. We seen Nick Walsh struggle to make big calls when VAR isn`t there to clean up his mess.

This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

We need much more transparency with refereeing across the board, not just in regards to VAR.
Referees should be compelled to publicly explain their reasons for making a contentious decision, either in a post-match interview or a statement released shortly after the match.
Using this case as an example, the ref made a call, then was advised to check VAR, then changed his mind. That`s fine, that`s all within his rights and is exactly what VAR was introduced to allow. Where it falls very short of acceptable is the silence as to why these series of decisions were made, what did he originally see, and what did he subsequently see to call a penalty. What particular guidelines was he thinking of when he formed his opinion, and what thought process did he go through?
If there was much more transparency then refs would be given more respect, and therefore their decisions would be respected. Equally, if a call was made in the heat of the moment that the ref then realised was incorrect post-match, own it. Admit it, and move on. Every team has had decisions go for them and against them, that`s the nature of the game. Honesty and explanation would go a long way to breaking down the barriers between referees and the rest of the game.
This closed-door unapproachable and unaccountable cotton-wooling of referees is creating situations like this, which could easily have been nipped in the bud by either an admission of a mistake or an explanation of why the call was made in accordance with the laws.

I saw a post on Reddit I largely agree with. It does sound slightly conspiracy theory like but makes good points.

Whether he touched the the ball with his hand is largely irrelevant.

The first thing you have to ask yourself is whether the referee saw enough in the 15seconds or so he was at the monitor to say with 100% absolute certainty that it was a foul. Not the super zoomed screenshots, not the alternate angle shown here - in real time, based on the angles he was shown at the screen, did he see enough in those 15 seconds to be 100% certain? Based on what we saw - the answer to that is no.

The second part of this is the question of whether or not it was or wasn’t a handball. The first part of law 12 states ‘Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.’ - straight away this puts the whole ‘look at this pic - it’s clear he touched it’ narrative under some scrutiny….. it’s not as simple as did he touch it yes or no.

The first consideration is - was it deliberate? The answer is almost certainly NO. That much isn’t up for debate.

The second part is - did he make his body artificially bigger? This means, did he extend his arm outwith the normal silhouette of his body to allow contact that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. For example - if you stand in a wall at a free kick, with your hands over your Crown Jewels and I kick the ball directly at your hand - that’s not a hand ball. If you stood with your hand on your chest and I kicked a ball at it - again, no hand ball as it would have otherwise hit your chest. The same applies here - his hand is in front of his forehead and within the silhouette of his body. In this regard - even if it DOES hit his hand, that doesn’t make it a foul.

The third part is the only element where there’s any sort of contention and that’s whether or not the hand was in a position which was not justifiable or a consequence of the players body movement. If he was on his own here, you could perhaps argue that his hand is in a position which is not justifiable by the body movement. However - that’s not what’s happened here, he has jumped for a challenge with an attacking player, and as a result of the contact with their shoulder, his arm has been diverted in front of his face.

Is the positioning of his arm justifiable based on that movement….. I would say entirely so.

Stick all that together and there’s just no way it can be considered a penalty, whether it hits his hand or not. And that’s on top of the fact the referee did not have enough evidence at his disposal to 100% satisfy himself anyway.

We`re really making an bottom of VAR. If it was `clear and obvious` there wouldn`t have been chat about it constantly for two days, with input from all over the world.
