 3rd Place Ranking updates
Topic Originator: onandupthepars

For those who like to try and suss our chances of qualifying from the group, there`s a list that updates as results come in (scroll to the bottom):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/table

It also shows all the group tables.

Dare I say, it`s beginning to look hopeful for us to qualify even on three points?

(See Uruguay v Cape Verde thread, with refs to group G,H, and group A currently. Dotnet statisticians might confirm grounds for cautious optimism?)

That`s every team played 2 games now and Scotland are sitting 2nd top in the table of 3rd placed teams, but I`m not at all confident about making the top 8.

The problem is that Scotland failed to beat Haiti by a more convincing margin and now have to face Brazil who by virtue of their draw with Morocco, will have to go all out for a big win if they want to top the group, as I`d expect Morocco to try and do the same v Haiti. šŸ˜’

Group A: If Mexico and South Korea don’t lose then 3rd placed team will be on 2 points

Group B: This one is more hopeful that Bosnia and Qatar draw, so 3rd place team on 2 points

Group D: Australia win then Paraguay will be 3rd with 3 points and start on -2 goal difference plus whatever Australia win by.

Group E: Germany and Ivory Coast don’t lose then 3rd on 2 points

Group F: Japan need to beat Sweden, they start on same GD as Scotland as 0, so we need to lose by less than Sweden:

Group G: Egypt win and 3rd placed team will have 2 points

Group H: Spain win and 3rd placed team will have 2 points

Group I: Senegal v Iraq, both on 0 points. Worst case for Scotland is that Senegal win and it goes to GD. Iraq win and they thirds but are on -6 GD. Best outcome would be a draw

Group J: Austrian beat Algerian then Algerian 3rd on 3 points and start with -2 GD

Group K:Need Congo not to beat Uzbekistan.

Group L: Need Ghana to beat Croatia

We only need 4 teams to be below us out 12. Some of the above is unlikely, but not all. Egypt to win and Spain to win has a high possibility, as does Ivory Coast/Germany both not to lose. If that happens we just need one more result to go our way, assuming we fail to get anything out of the Brazil game.

I haven’t looked but I’d imagine the odds at the bookies on Scotland making the last 32 is odds on.

How is the 73% calculated from 1.37?

100/1.37 = 73%

To work out implied probability you simply divide 100 by the decimal odds

It`s irrelevant how many goals Morocco score as they are on 4 points. Knowing our luck though they`ll end up losing to Haiti, we get pumped and finish 4th. One thing for sure is the more goals we lose by will decrease our chances of making it, so we need to keep it tight, play super defensive football and hopefully only lose by 1 or 2. Maybe we can fluke a draw if the football gods are on our side.

As it stands though we have a better chance to qualify than to not qualify, I reckon we`ll scrape through in about 6th or 7th best. It would be a tragedy not to finally qualify with so many teams going through.

If we do qualify we`ll be playing another top class side, probably France, Germany or Mexico.

I thought it went on head to head before goal difference . I`m pretty sure we`re guaranteed at least 3d . Not that I think that`ll be much of an achievement 3d place is likely to get us a game v a group winner and a probable tanking .

We cant finish 4th due to H2H with Haiti - been brought in for this World Cup. Hopefully Bosnia draw and Mexico/SK win or draw and thats already 2 groups of the 4 done.

Of course it would be better if we won tonight to put it beyond doubt!

Yes, you`re right, it does. I was referring to Brazil and Morocco. That was because GG Riva said Brazil and Morocco would be trying to out score each other, then Kozma said it didn`t matter how many Morocco score.

I`d be more wary of DR Congo on 1 point and finish against Iraq
Senegal on zero points and minus 3 but play Uzbekistan.
Both could overtake Scotland.
Currently if we finish eighth we would face Canada.

But this is the equivalent of Fort William Vs Celtic.
We`ll do well to keep them to 3 or 4 goals.

I wouldn`t say it`s like Fort William v Celtic, more like Dunfermline v Celtic.

Opta still gives us a 50/50 chance of qualifying, it`ll go down to the last day of games though. If we make it, it`ll be scraping into 8th best.

Still a chance so keep your fingers crossed.

There are enough groups still in play to be hopeful that the 3rd placed team will finish with fewer than 3 points (Groups A, E, G,H,I,K). Hope springs eternal ...

However, if a team finishes level with Scotland on 3 points (-3 GD), the next determinant is Goals Scored, and in that situation our only goal won`t be enough.

The 2 groups with third-placed teams that were most likely to end up below Scotland were Groups A and E. With So Korea losing tonight, they finish above Scotland in Group A.

Tomorrow, we need Group E to go to plan, Australia to beat Paraguay by 2 goals and Japan to beat Sweden by 4 goals.

If I had to guess, the third-placed teams in:
- Groups D, J, K and L will finish with 4 pts.
- Groups G and H will finish with 3 pts and 0 GD.
- Groups F and I will finish with 3 pts and a negative GD.
- Group E will finish with less than 3 pts.

In other words, Scotland will finish 11th of 12 third-placed teams.
Hope I’m wrong.

They won`t need to "arrange" anything at all, Bandy. If a draw ensures both teams go through, they probably won`t take any risks. There`s no obligation to try and win every game and plenty of teams often go out to avoid defeat.

Having lived in South Africa for 46 years they are my second team and so I watched the game after the Scotland game. South Africa finally came good putting in a spirited performance to deservedly beat higher ranked South Korea 1-0 and get out of the group stage for the first time at a World Cup. Sadly for Scotland, if it had stayed at 0-0, then with Mexico beating Czechia, South Africa would have helped Scotland by finishing third with only 2 points.

So 4 of 6 third-placed teams have 4 pts. I could see Algeria, DR Congo and Croatia joining them, which would mean only 1 team with 3 pts would make it. Also, I would put it past Senegal to outscore Iraq by 3 and get to a 0 GD with 5+ goals scored.

Iran and Uruguay each have 2 draws and play tomorrow. I expected them both to play for draws, but I’m not too sure now. Uruguay has scored 1 more goal than Iran so presently has the edge between them.

Do they look for the win?

I didn`t expect South Africa to beat South Korea, or Ecuador to beat Germany. Those results, along with Paraguay`s draw and Turkey`s win last night, all went against Scotland. Although qualification is still mathematically possible I cannot see a likely route to it. Perhaps it`s just as well!

In Group G, if Egypt beat Iran then the 3rd-placed team in will have 2 points, so below Scotland.
POSSIBLE

In Group H, if Spain beat Uruguay, then the 3rd-placed team will have 2 points, so below Scotland.
POSSIBLE

In Group I, a draw between Senegal and Iraq would mean the 3rd-placed team will have 1 point, so below Scotland.
Senegal beating Iraq would give them 3 points and a better GD than Scotland.
An Iraq victory by 3 goals would take them above Scotland on GS.
UNLIKELY

In Group J, victory by 2+ goals for Austria would mean Algeria finish 3rd with 3 points and a poorer GD than Scotland.
Any other result would mean the 3rd placed team would finish above Scotland.
UNLIKELY

In Group K, if it is a draw between Uzbekistan and DR Congo or if Uzbekistan win by fewer than 4 goals, then the 3rd placed team will finish below Scotland.
Any win for DR Congo would give them 4 points, so above Scotland.
POSSIBLE

In Group L, if Ghana beat Croatia by 3+ goals, then Croatia will be 3rd with 3 points and a poorer GD than Scotland.
Any other result, or if Panama beat England, will see the 3rd placed team finish above Scotland.
UNLIKELY

We`re out. No way are we going through and quite rightly too. And tbh, i`m glad we`re out. I cant take this anymore. Lol. The hope you feel, the buzz, the excitment, just for it to be slapped out of you within a few minutes of kick off. Now can just relax and enjoy some football without worrying. What results do Scotland need to qualify?
There are eight groups left to play, and Scotland need four third-placed teams to have a worse record than them.

It means they need a minimum of four of the following scenarios to play out:

FRIDAY

Group I: Senegal and Iraq to draw.

Or Iraq to beat Senegal by no more than two goals.

Group H: Uruguay to lose to Spain.

Group G: Iran to lose to Egypt.

SATURDAY

Group L: Croatia to lose to Ghana by at least three goals.

Group K: DR Congo v Uzbekistan to be a draw.

Or Uzbekistan to win by no more than three goals.

Group J: Austria and Algeria are on three points and a draw would send both through.

Scotland need Algeria to lose by two or more goals, or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals.

Scotland are already pretty much eliminated as no matter what result happens in the Cape Verde v Saudi match, one of those teams will go above us and we then need results to go against some very good teams such as Croatia, Belgium and Dr Congo. It`s not going to happen šŸ˜•.

Will a draw not virtually ensure Spain top spot in the group and give Uruguay 3 pts? That would put them above Scotland and in with a chance of going through? Cape Verde v Saudi will probably be a tight game, but Cape Verde may edge it to put them 2nd.

We’re nearly the rankest of the rank. Must admit I’m surprised to see Belgium in 11th.
If this ain’t a sign to the SFA on the state of the Scottish game then I don’t know what is. We need a big reconstruction that will favour our Scottish young players and allow them to flourish rather than disappear with in system full of import players and large wages south of the border. Talent encourages talent and brings surrounding players on. We need to hold onto this talent and have more of it playing in the SPFL.

Ian Wright`s theory is that Scottish football suffers from a lack of finance because of a relatively poor TV deal despite having the highest per capita attendance figures of any country in Europe for the third year in a row.

Apparently Norway, where football isn`t the main winter sport, gets around £50m a year from broadcasting compared with £30m in Scotland.

I’m not sure how the tv money gets split up. Is it just all prize money at the end of the season? Cause if so it just goes to the two usual Glasgow teams. Are all teams given an equal payment at the start of the season?

That`s us out of the top 8, we`re guaranteed to be 10th after the next group concludes. Croatia, Belgium, DR Congo and Algeria could all still get pumped though so I guess the squad has to hang around in case the pigs fly. I can`t see the fans hanging around if they ain`t paid up though as it`s all highly unlikely now.

Croatia need to lose to Ghana by 3+ goals (highly unlikely) AND England need to avoid defeat by Panama. I think we can forget about this group.

Belgium's result doesn't matter, provided Iran lose against Egypt. Hopeful.

If Spain beat Uruguay, the 3rd-placed team can only get 2 points. Hopeful.

A draw between DR Congo and Uzbekistan is enough for Scotland, OR a (highly unlikely,) 3-goal win for Uzbekistan - it has to be exactly 3 goals!

Austria need to beat Algeria by 2+ goals. No other result is enough for Scotland.

I think Scotland will finish 10th, which might be easier to take than finishing 9th and missing out by one place!

I had guessed 11th, and Uruguay losing tonight puts Scotland in front of them. 10th is a possibility with Group G’s games tonight. But J, K and L offer very little hope.

Turkey and Uruguay are two very good teams heading home. Czechia are no mugs either. Having to face 2 of the top 6 ranked teams was a tall order.

Iran do the job too. Only a Croatia pumping along with Algeria losing by 2 and DR Congo drawing or losing narrowly will see us scrape into 8th. The team have to stay for one more day at least just in case the unlikely miracle happens. It should be officially over this evening if 68th ranked Ghana don`t beat 11th ranked Croatia by 3 goals.

Agree the TV deal isn`t great, wee eck, but the lion`s share is gobbled up by guess which two clubs almost every year, due to final league positions? The drop off after 2nd is quite eye-opening.

As for attendances, they are completely skewed by those at Ibrox and Parkhead. I`m sure you will know that the attendance at those grounds can sometimes be greater than the total at every other senior ground in Scotland.

Norway have every game broadcast, it’s not an apples vs apples comparison with our tv deal.

Our attendances are not skewed anymore than other countries, we still top the attendance per capita once you remove the top 2 attended clubs in every country.

The most Scotland thing ever:

10:00 Group L
England beat Panama
Ghana beat Croatia 3-0

00:30 Group K
Colombia and Portugal go unnoticed
Uzbekistan draw with DRC or beat them by less than four

03:00 Group J
Austria beat Algeria by two or more
Jordan steal an injury time winner against Argentina and the eighth and final playoff spot

Not unlike Italia 90. In what must have been the final game, Uruguay and S Korea were seeing out a 0-0 draw which would have put the South Americans into the hat with Austria and ourselves for the final best third place. A one-in-three chance of progressing based on luck of the draw. In the final moments they scored and we came home.

One final thought. I can`t believe we`ve got this far and I`ve not heard the phrase "group of death" once.

I wonder how many deflected goals there have been in the tournament to date? A quick scan of all the results reveals there have been 12 own goals so far but ours was attributed to John McGinn. They all count. We seem to love to put ourselves down though, like only winning our qualifying group because the other teams dropped points!

We’re 10th in the 3rd place table.

We need Ghana to defeat Croatia by 3 goals or more and either DR Congo and Uzbekistan to draw, or for the latter to win by a maximum of 3 goals.

We also need Austria to beat Algeria by at least 2 goals, or for Algeria to win by 4 goals or more.

Croatia v Ghana 10pm tonight
DR Congo v Uzbekistan 0030 Sunday
Algeria v Austria 0300 Sunday

I don`t buy the `whataboutery` that other teams have benefited from deflected goals or own goals as a reason not to be critical of Scotland`s performance.

The fundamental criticism that we we only had two shots on target and scored one goal (deflected or otherwise) against a team 40 odd places below us in the rankings is not in any way mitigated by what other teams have done.

It`s not `whataboutery` (a terrible word). I`m not disputing we didn`t have enough shots or make enough chances but who cares if one went `in off`? It happens all the time in football. Nobody mentions McTominay hit the post before we scored against Haiti. Why not?

Yeah, but a sclaffed shot that went in off a defender does. Would you have felt better if McGinn`s goal had been a 25-yard worldie after a 10-man passing move? I don`t uncerstand this need to make things even worse than they already are.

Own goals, deflected goals etc are goals at the end of the day due to the teams pressure on their opponents. A bit the same with penalties. You often hear managers complaining about losing goals because of defensive mistakes. The other way to look at it os to say the opposition applied pressure and forced us into errors. Its the same result just said a different way. Thomas Jefferson said "I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it."

I think that applies to football as much as anything else.

Anyone else hoping the club are reading this thread and that they decide we need a nice wee bit of signing news to lift the World Cup blues...

I had quite low expectations going into it, so I`m disappointed rather than devastated. Based on how we played, elimination at the group stage on goal difference feels about right.

But its hard not to watch the likes of Cape Verde, Iran, Australia and Sweden (who lets not forget finished second bottom of their qualifying group) and wonder what if šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Our group was certainly a group of death.

Morocco are African Nations Finalists and they are both them and Brazil are ranked 6th and 7th respectively.

I always suspected we would finish 3rd but am a little surprised at how poorly we gifted goals away.

We were 2 or 3 terrible refereeing decisions away from stealing a win against Morocco - They dominated the first half but the decisions in the second half were baffling that VAR never got involved only to compound my anger when watching similar penalty awards in later matches.

I wonder a bit if Haiti`s world ranking might not be reflective of the squad they have now.

They are well known to have lots of french born players, quite a few of whom accepting a call up when it became clear they were going to a world cup. I expect their rank will improve over the next few years.

As bad as Scotland were, it 100% was a `group of death`. 2 top ten ranked teams in the one group constitutes that fact. Early goals, gifted goals, and no attacking threat is what killed us. We could easily have robbed a point from Morocco or beat Haiti more convincingly but it wasn`t to be.

I wonder when/if we`ll ever see Scotland go past a group stage in any tournament? I`m almost 50 so I`m doubtful that I`ll see it in my lifetime.

It`s a shame the way the draw went with so many teams unable to be added to the group before we finally took the place.

Was always going to be a hard one - the penalty not given v Morocco hurts even more now we are out.

Was hoping Brazil would win both opening games so maybe rest some players v us but that didn`t happen.

Real shame we couldn`t score more v Haiti or get the draw with Morocco.

We had to keep the score down in a loss v Brazil and couldn`t do that, even with 1 chopped off so bottom line is, we didn`t really deserve to go through.

Seeing "smaller" nations gain draws against "superior" opposition has been particularly galling.

We`re just not good enough - bottom line.

Very very fine margins determined our fate as you say.
Imagine we got that penalty vs Morocco and scored and went into Brazil game with very little pressure as a result?

Only 1 3rd placed team qualified with 3 points. We would have needed a plus 3 goal difference to qualify or realistically 4 points.

Algeria scored in injury time against Austria which would have seen the Austrians knocked out and Iran through. Austria scored an equaliser 2 mins later to seal their place in the last 16 and knock Iran out.

I’m kind of glad we knew we were going out a few days ago. That would have been a sickener.

I feel so sorry for Iran. FIFA and the corrupt American regime have thoroughly shafted them. They played well, were unbeaten and had critical decisions go against them.
