Turley, not Krueger!
That`s rhe rumour I heard last Saturday though I`d given up on it after yesterday`s signing of Dylan Lobban.

If Freddie Turley comes back, that would be a good signing. I thought he was very good while here. Solid.
Not sure I’d believe it with that signing yesterday tho 🤷🏻♂️

He is a really good player so I’m happy to have him back.
I’m really confused about the ambitions of the club though. I thought we were planning to buy and develop young players, sell them on eventually and reinvest?
We seem to be bringing in lots of young players on loan who will ultimately go back to their clubs.
This will inevitably mean we have to continually rebuild every year when they depart and we won’t gain anything through transfer fees.
It’s just feeling to me that we are repeating last year and won’t be experienced enough for promotion. So feels like we are treading water but why?what are we trying to achieve?
Anyone give me any thoughts on this? Thanks 👍

Is it not also a chance to assess a player while we have him on loan and make a bid for him at the end of the season, as we did with Oxborough?

What exactly do you want them to say, apart from “everyone loses money whilst in the Championship”, which we all already know? They are investing in pretty much every aspect of the club. Without them, who knows where we would be.
We should all be grateful that they are putting money into the club and funding our losses.

James Bord was a professional gambler so he`s likely to have a different mindset from your average fan. Apparently DC told hospitality last weekend that we made £1m from last season`s Cup run although we`re likely to have made an overall loss for the year. I`m sure JB realises to have any chance of making money consistently in Scottish football you`ve got to get into the Premiership.

Thanks for your thoughts.
However, if we bring players up from down south then it’s going to be a pretty hefty fee to get them to sign up long term and relocate their family. We couldn’t get Ollie Thomas back I understand.
Also if we bring in loan players and they actually do amazing does that not encourage the parent club to demand high fees and encourage interest from other clubs - Barney is maybe an example.
I’m not sure how this is working in a practical sense.

It was said on the radio yesterday that Dundee United got a player on loan and they negotiated 10% of the parent clubs transfer fee for the player which is an interesting strategy and reward for developing the player.

Too much quoting going on here, however the point I was laughing at was your “We won’t be anywhere near automatic promotion this season” point. That’s wild after 2 league games.
“I take it you were laughing when we nearly lost the club under Masterton aye? People love turning a blind eye to these situations.” - Em, no of course I wasn’t but this is a very different situation to that one. Spooky old thing, I have just made this post on P&B and although not totally fitting in with this, it does explain what I think. Have a read:
Absolutely and I’m not denying any of that. I totally agree with the first couple of lines, we will be spending outwith our means as an individual club. There’s no doubt about that.
I’ve been following the club since I was six years old and have lived through the roller coaster that is the club, and Scottish football, for the last 40 years, so it’s only natural to be apprehensive. I completely get it.
However, that’s right if you’re looking at us as an individual club. But we’re not. We’re part of an ever expanding group and, for the first time in our lives, that changes things.
Dunfermline Athletic FC might be overspending, but the group as a whole could potentially be very profitable.
When the owners eventually sell up and that could be in 50 years for all we know, they’re selling the group, not just the club. When you look at Bordeaux and (although ultimately unsuccessful) Sheffield Wednesday, they’re adding clubs with HUGE amounts of historical debt without blinking an eye.
Why? Only they can answer that, but you can only assume they’re looking at it as an investment because they see strength and potential in the group as a business.
I’m probably not explaining this particularly well, but I just don’t understand the consensus that all of this spending is necessarily being loaded onto us. It isn’t necessarily. We’re part of something much bigger, and our expenditure could quite easily be offset by income or investment coming from elsewhere within the group.
That’s why I think we need to be a bit careful about assuming we know exactly what’s happening financially when, in reality, we don’t know the full picture.

I`m not sure as a club we are overspending to the point that it is unsustainable. You could also look at it as investment i.e. investing in a group of players and ckub, that if managed correctly will be profitable in one or two years time. It depends on the model, that appears to be, bring in younger players, develop them and then allow them to move on in their xareersif clubs are willingto come in and pay transfer or development fees. The parallel to this is develop a squad to get us back into the premiership. No doubt there is a budget and financial limitation in that mix, so obviously we would need to rely on players who come in on loan. I think that JCM, KN and MT moving on upset tge apple cart, so there has been a bit of rebuilding to do and it will take time to get the team performing as a unit to the levels needed. Despite the poor performance yesterday, I still feel confident we have a squad capable of competing for top spot. It may take 2 or 3 games to get up to speed, where we still need to pick up points, but I think it will come. There is more expectation on the team this year so its how the players deal with it that will be key. They have the skill; its having the mental resilience and strength to deal with the pressure that brings that will be different this season.
Its going to be new territory for the younger players and a consistent high level of performance is what wins championships.
Analytics and data are a wonderful thing from measurable outputs but they can`t predict everything.

The strategy is getting us out of the division, which they have been pretty open about. We have a manager who is probably on more than any other manager in the league. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how much you spend, it doesn’t guarantee success. Bord has done more than the previous regime and hasn’t tried to lie his way through it like the German consortium done.
Why do some people think we have any right to get regular updates on every single decision involved in the club? We narrowly missed out on a playoff final and reached a Scottish Cup final last season. I would say the strategy is working. We have started slow but no promotion aspirations are won or lost in the middle of August.
We have had a poor start, but we still got out of the group stages of the League Cup, something we have struggled to do in recent years. We have identified a problem area of the pitch and made a serious investment to rectify it. What else do you want them to do?
This is Andy Tod`s world and we are lucky to live in it.

I must have forgot we won the cup. So a cup final is a success? You should tell that to “massive” clubs such as St Johnstone and St Mirren who actually go and win the trophies. Let’s see if that 1 million touches the sides in the latest accounts eh?

So what should we all do then?
Maybe start by not paying fees for players who aren’t up to the level to get us promoted. I mean we actually paid a fee for Rudden.

I realise people have different points of view but I would have thought everyone would agree that making £1m from getting to the Cup Final was better than NOT making £1m from getting to the Cup Final. Apparently not!

The boss who would you bring in then because if you remember to Rudden first coming in he started brilliantly then got an injury then hasn’t quite got back up to speed but again from the 352 forum posts you can see the style of play isn’t helping the strikers so in your world who would you be looking at

Its mid August
Bray scores last week and Tod scores with that header we have two undeserved wins and a lot of this goes away.
We`ll be fine.

100% this. We won’t be anywhere near automatic promotion this season. Racking up debt at the same time too.
Quick question, in the last set of accounts (to 31 May 2025) did the club debt go up or down? Quick answer, the debt was substantially reduced. May have made a substantial loss, but the overall debt of the club was reduced.

The club has huge tax losses brought forward which could be offset against current profits if there were any. There`s no prospect of paying tax any time soon.

I work for a big 4 accountancy firm and that statement just shows you have zero clue about accounts or finance. Whatever way you spin it, you can’t complain about how we are racking up mountains of debt and getting no reward when it ignores the fact we got to a cup final as a team outwith the top division but also that the debt has gone down.
We did post a very large loss (which isn’t the same as having debt) that isn’t sustainable in the long term. However I think we need the new signings to be given a chance to settle and see where we are on the pitch. I thought there were a lot of good things about the match against Ayr, albeit there were some negatives. The game against Ross County was poor.

So it isn’t sustainable in the long term? Shock horror! Right so how long with these loses can we stay in the championship?

The owners seem happy to cover any losses in the short term. Of course we haven’t seen the accounts to May 2026 which will include the cup run.
If we get promotion then the financial position totally changes, so that’s the aim. That is what the club is aiming for.
Investing in the young players may also lead to players being sold for a profit. We’ve had offers for players such as E’too which we were able to turn down.
Somewhere down the line if we don’t look like getting promoted then the managers position will come into question. But we’re a long way from that imo and I’ll wait and see how we’re doing once the window closes and the new signings have shown they can do.

I think that you have to align player development and aspirations, with club development and aspirations. You could argue that for the 2nd half of the season we had a solid foundation defensively of which 3 of the 5 decided to move on at the end of last season.. Yesterdays solutions are todays problems as they say. The fact that we did not offer longer term contracts it seems was partly due to the financial position of the club and possibly the uncertainty of being able to stay in the league. Indeed they may have even been turned down. This year we have to start again in a sense, and players that have been brought in may take a little time to settle. We still seem to be in the early "forming" stage of team development theory ie forming, norming, storming, performing. Ideally we would have built on the foundation of last season and we would hit the ground performing but thats life. NL eluded to this not long after tge cup final. I think the players we have brought have the potential to be better, so its a case being patient, keep going get everyone up to speed as soon as possible, and push on for promotion this year. We are capable of doing it.

I guess that’s the worry for me. Happy enough to cover the losses whilst we strive for promotion, but how long do they give it?

Correct, I am not an accountant or a professional financier, I have however managed large accounts. However previous partners was an accountant, with tax duties thrown in. I am aware that companies set up finances to minimise tax. But as you say it does not get away from viability and sustainability of a good business, of which tax a major part that has to be managed.
Note all the companies operating with massive turnovers paying minimum tax, especially to the UK, sadly and dubiously legally.

Great post.
Unfortunately until we get into the premier and offer contracts to the players on loan that we hope to sign long term we’ll struggle to get good starts to league campaigns. We had 6 weeks from the cup final to the start of the new season to replace the heart of our team. It now looks like we’ve completed that transformation and are ready to properly move forward. For my money we look to have a much more physical squad than we did last season and a good platform to push for promotion. The formation needs looking at but I’d say we’re in good shape.

From where we were when they came then I`m guessing a wee bit more than 19 months.
I think there have been plenty signs of progress on and off the pitch and I`m fairly certain the owners won`t be distracted by a couple of sh1tty results.

Having played so well on the right side of the 3 x CB`s ( he played there in the 3-0 wins against Aberdeen, RossCo. and Raith) I presume thats where Lennon will use him although technically he has the ability to play in other roles.
